Rugby World Cup 2015 | Reminiscing Thread

South Africa do not have a prayer in winning this tournament and will likely lose to Scotland. 5 defeats in their last 8, and cant see them beating any of the good teams at this tournament, so it'll be a last 16 exit most probably.

Watched the first half of this game with a South African. He was not impresssed whatsoever. Fair play to Japan.

What a well worked try, credit to Japan.

Unbelievable!!! What a finish. What a result. So deserved!!!

They deserved it, what a finale.

Japan beat South Africa
South Africa still get 2 points though, so not that bad

One of the greatest games I have ever watched in rugby. The courage to turn down two kicks for the draw at the end and go on to win it with a try in the corner. Incredible stuff and they were full value for their win. Favourites to top that group now.

What an amazing and deserved win for Japan.

feck. Missed what's been described as the best game in years.

Holy shit I wish I watched it live, what a fecking result!

Not a better game than when England smashed NZ....but hell, feck it, yes it was. Amazing.

What would be the football equivalent of this result? I have not much knowledge on Rugby
Difficult to compare as upsets in rugby are much rarer than in football.

Let's say Iceland beating Argentina, I think that might be an apt comparison.

In international football terms, imagine Northern Ireland beating Argentina.

South Africa are a rugby powerhouse. In the past 3 decades they've always been one of the best, and in recent years considered the second best team in the world behind All Blacks. However this season they've been in terrible form, losing pretty much all their games leading up the WC. To be honest, this reminds me of Italy's dismal showing in the FIFA 2010 World Cup: traditional big nation ridiculously under-performing.

Japan haven't won a world cup game in 24 years and South Africa were 2nd favourites for the tournament. You're looking at an absolute minnow beating Brazil or Spain in the pool stages of a World Cup.

Then you factor in that South Africa base their rugby on being huge and beastly, and that Japan are one of the smaller, lighter sides in the game and it beggars belief. Then they have 2 penalties in the dying seconds - simple kicks to tie the game and earn an historic draw.

They turned both down. Put everything on the line and scored the try to win it 3 or 4 minutes after the clock was dead.

Current rankings have SA as 3rd, Japan as 13th, but it's not quite like football. The gap between the top teams and everyone else is much bigger than in football. It's kind of like the premier league versus at best league 1.

Also keep in mind it's a high scoring game. So instead of stealing the match 1-0, the Northern Ireland/Andorra/Iceland team is beating Brazil/Germany/Argentina 4-3.
