Ruben Amorim - Manchester United Head Coach

I will be surprised he implements his 3-4-2-1 in the very first match with barely a few days of training.
Can we stop spreading this BS rhetoric that for some mystical reason Manchester United players aren't able to play this and that.. The manager comes with his known game plan and chooses the players to play it and that's what they must adapt.

It’s a shame that he doesn’t have many players at Carrington for the next 10 days….

Who is there?

Rashy, Mount, Maguire, Evans, Yoro, Kobbie, Malacia, Shaw, Casimero, Anthony and a bunch of kids. Not sure how many are not fit to train.

Got a feeling that Mount might get a resurgence under Amorim if he can stay fit.

Agreed.

Licha, De Ligt, Maguire, Ugarte are all very verse with playing 5 at the back. Even players like Dalot and Bruno for Portugal play it.

I have full faith that Amorim gets us playing with the 3-4-3 straight away and the players who cannot or dont want to, can be dropped.

I suspect we will see the usual reports come out from players camp that players are not happy with his training methods, which has led to our managers changing the tactics to suit certain players.

This won't fly anymore, the structure has brought in the manager and will back him regardless of 1/2 players not liking the system.

He can play 1-1-8 if he wants. Feck the players preference. You get paid to do your job and that involves following manager's instruction.

100% this.

I don't think he will change his style just because Rashford, for example, throws his dummy out the pram because Amorims asked him to track back and actually do some defending. Amorim will just drop him.

I get the impression it's very much his way or the highway and rightly so.

Can’t see any reason he just come in and allowed to play how he knows he can. Will take upto maybe 5 games for the players to get used to the system plus all will have directions and game plan to execute will make it easier to adapt. Well paid pros we should at least expect that from them.

I expect him to start with a simple edition of 3-4-3 and then tweak it to suit our players better as the season progresses.

Looking at this optimistically admittedly, we could play 4231, and it would still be overly complex for the players. They would struggle to understand their roles, for example, inverting full back into defence or midfield. They are not used to it or suited to it. If they have to think where they need to be in defensive transition, then it's generally too late. We have seen this plenty over the last 18 months and still look like a bunch of strangers playing together.

I don't think the formation is too much of an issue so long as you have players who can understand the roles they have been asked to do. Most teams attack in a 325, so the start formation probably makes it simpler, as you'll have the right players in the right positions.

Why do they look so weird?

GcHjMm3XUAA6vLj
Reminds me of that Windows 95 launch video with them all on stage.

Yeah anyone who watches our games this season knows that our in posession shape is 3-2-5.

So a 3-4-3 is a very natural shape, the players will adjust very quickly.

its just that our OOP shape will shift from 4-4-2 to a 5-2-3.

Who's the bald guy? it's not Berrada is it? I don't think it's a good idea to have a CEO who shows off his shoes to a new employee

Indeed. A team full of internationals, some of whom will have played in that system before at club or international level. If that's how he wants to play they either fit into the new system or get left behind.

Vangle did it (in the most dead, boring style ever). Managers play what managers want to play, fully back Amorim to get the job done.

I’m genuinely excited for this appointment.

I was excited for Ten Hag due to his supposed tactical nous and playing style at the time. That didn’t translate well over here. However, I believe as many have said previously, the difference this time is charisma.

The downfall for Erik I believe was overcomplicating his ideas, wanted set roles, positions and build up at all times. I also feel his demeanour made it hard to get points across to the players, this resulted in poor translation of the ideas on the pitch.

With charisma comes excitement, comes wanting to be a part of this new regime. I feel like the players will get behind him in a similar way to Klopp at Liverpool. It’s not always about how tactically brilliant you are, but also how you get that across and how you make the team perform better.
Nail on head in my opinion. It’s not just about being tactically thorough (as McClaren talked about when ETH joined us) but also about how well you can engage the players and get your message across. I think that was at least part of Ten Hags failings.

The premier league has a way of very quickly exposing managers who lack the required tactical nous and ability to adapt and improvise. I suspect that by the end of this season, we’d know if Amorim is the man to take us to the top.

ETH was an anomaly to the above in that he did well initially to mask his complete ignorance in managing the demands of premier league football. But the truth eventually emerged.

It will be 3-4-3 from the get go, he knows he has a full bank of patience and needs to start coaching the system as soon as. De Ligt said we played 3 at the back in the end of the Leicester game. The defensive shape is my least worry in the new tactic.

Like he said though. It’s best to start with something he knows and then drill it into the players. Changing formations will confuse players. May aswell start with what we’re going to be using whilst he’s here and then buy in the summer to fit that style

I believe he will go with the 3-4-3 from the off.

Some players will have an edge on understanding his tactics as he will be working with them over the international break.

This isn't a short term approach, his ideas won't have been imbedded till probably the end of the season, which will show who suits the system, who doesn't, who wants to be here and who doesn't.

We know this team has obvious flaws, but the foundations he will be able to lay between now and the end of the season will put us in good stead going forward.

Top 4 would be the perfect season, but realistically it will be Europa league again, unless we can go on to win it this season.

I believe he will implement straight away his 3-4-3, the dynamics from the formation will depend on the players. I believe he will start to prepare Diallo to be the right winger (he loves when the right winger plays with left foot), and Bruno will problaby play in the front 3 (left side), to build the bridges between midfield and attack.

When he started in Sporting, he had like 3 trainings before his first match and he implemented the 3-4-3 since the first minute. That his what he believes in, and he never worked on a back 4 formation, he has no clue how to implement it at the moment.

All of your CB that are slow and have difficulties to start the build up, will probably leave the team.

He loves Ugarte and will give him a lot of confidence. I'm not sure if he will believe in Eriksen to be one of the two guys in Midfield... The paar of midfielders will have to run a lot without the ball.

If he can improve the mental health from Garnacho he will explode, but I think that he will play a lot as left winger.

I believe also he will take the best out of Rasmus Hojlund also.

But what I will really miss about him is his communication skills, every press conference it's worth because he always send messages to the fans and the teams.

I really believe he will make you guys smile again.

Absolutely agree.

It’s no coincidence Spurs raised concerns about his communication skills and charismatic abilities (EtH)

Yeah, I think he will too. This season is something of a free hit for him, he won't be judged for failing to reach top 4. Switching to a new formation is bound to cause at least the odd hiccup, so it makes more sense to go for it this season. Plus it'll make it easier to assess which players can work within his preferred system and inform transfer dealings next summer.

The worry is we only have 1 quick centre half out of those 6. If we're replacing Lindelof and Evans in the summer we need to start prioritising speed and athleticism
We need athleticism all around the pitch. Especially from our wingbacks.
