Ruben Amorim - Manchester United Head Coach

Good luck making line-up predictions for his first game. If he’s got a fit squad then I think the 1-3-4 are fairly easy. Front 3 will be very interesting though.

Surely has to be Amad, Bruno and Rasmus? I think those are pretty straight forward.

I think we'll see some experimenting with those places and the wing backs. He would probably want to see what players like Garnacho and Rashford would do in one of the two places behind the striker.

It's a very exciting hire, I just hope after all the hype around them, that Ashworth and his team can give him the players he needs to actually implement his vision

After the mess that was Ten Hags failure to implement anything vaguely hinting at a coherent structure, I just want to see the new manager actually have a go at sticking to his principles.

If he fails that's OK, we will move onto the next one but let's not waste time with more of the muddled mess we saw under Ten Hag which was going nowhere.

I’m genuinely excited for this appointment.

I was excited for Ten Hag due to his supposed tactical nous and playing style at the time. That didn’t translate well over here. However, I believe as many have said previously, the difference this time is charisma.

The downfall for Erik I believe was overcomplicating his ideas, wanted set roles, positions and build up at all times. I also feel his demeanour made it hard to get points across to the players, this resulted in poor translation of the ideas on the pitch.

With charisma comes excitement, comes wanting to be a part of this new regime. I feel like the players will get behind him in a similar way to Klopp at Liverpool. It’s not always about how tactically brilliant you are, but also how you get that across and how you make the team perform better.

For the first time in a long while (not counting the RVN interim period), I'm really looking forward to watch us play again and we have to wait because of international break. But also it's kinda of a good thing, because it gives Amorim time to get to know the training grounds and people working in and around the club, not to mention work with the players who aren't on international duty.

I'm so excited and also I'm happy that the first match is against Ipswich, yes it's not an easy ground to play at, but you'd think we should beat them and also score at least 2 goals there.

Another great post. This is really raising the level here. It will be hard to gauge whether or not it's the right call to transition mid-season, unless of course he starts flying. The profiles you mention in your squad aren't really what we have at the minute, but we'll see what Yoro can do, though of course he should not be expected to play like an elite centre back, he's 18.

I think the Casemiro - Ugarte midfield is looking pretty solid and it has freed Casemiro up to be more box to box, and he's a good final third player. He might actually finish his contract here and maybe merit half or two thirds of his wages (!) There'll be plenty of game time for Mainoo but maybe not the over reliance which will serve him well I hope.

I had no idea about your front three prior to Gyökeres, which is illuminating. Hojlund is not the physical player Gyökeres is and he's yet to prove he can stay fit for a long spell at a time, but I think he'll lead that front line and Amorim will task the other players to provide him the service he's been starved off. And not use him as a target man which he's not suited to.

But in terms of how "we should play", I think that's down to personnel. If we haven't got the requisite quality, we won't be going toe to toe with City. And at this moment in time, we're far off. Our fanbase would be over the moon with a dogged 4-1 win against City with 29% (or whatever it was) possession. And we in fact were over the moon with such a performance only last May. Until there are some bona fide elite players that decide the bigger matches in this club that won't change. But if Amorim can get United to dominate games against the tier below and the tier below that, etc. he'll have managed something not seen for a decade.

I understand United players have different skills, but I was just pointing out that just because they don't correlate with our players doesn't mean that they can't play in those positions, just in a different capacity.Keep in mind that a simple adjustment in positioning can alter the team dynamics by a lot, just like Pote dropping back closer to the midfielders changed Sporting's performance in the 2nd half.
Amorim's start at Sporting was mostly focused on defensive performance. We won that title conceding only 20 goals, and apart from Pote with 23 goals, all the others didn't reach double digits. Coates (CB) scored 7, most of them at stoppage time giving us valuable points.
Our offence improved with each season, as Amorim was learning and adjusting his style and mentality. He likes to work with short squads, but when the calendar has more and more games he's had to adjust that.
All this to say that you shouldn't look at what Amorim was doing lately at Sporting as a goal for United, but more like a starting point.
He'll be more reliant on what he knows best and feels will work right now, but expect his tactics to evolve over time. Remember, he's still a pretty young manager. 1 year at Casa Pia, 6 months at Braga and 4 and half years at Sporting. That's 6 years experience. If the higher ups give him time, he'll get better and better over time.

I think the fact that he’s the same nationality as our captain is actually a benefit. I just can’t see Bruno undermining him or taking the side of whinging players.

Why do they look so weird?

Nooooo! not the wenger coat.

Bruno will play wherever and however the coach asks him to. He is very capable of being an 8 box to box and there is nothing to stop him playing his rangy passing game from the middle of the park rather than no.10 position. The bolded is a slightly silly comment. Bruno finished the cup final at CB for example, and he will always do what the team needs him to.
I don't doubt that Bruno would play where he is asked. He always puts the team first. But he would get killed playing as a deep midfielder in the PL. He isn't great at slowing down the game when needed, he can be reckless when pressing and he is almost always looking for the killer ball. I think he is a world class attacking midfielder, and all his best traits suit that role, but deeper, I wouldn't want to see it.

I don't think Amorim could have asked for 3 better centre backs to play a back 3 then Martinez, De Ligt and Yoro. And im really looking forward to seeing a transformed defence. I'm hoping he works really closely with Mainoo and develops him in the role he had Nunes playing at Sporting.

My worry is, will all of them remain fit for him for a sustainable period. What happens if two of them get injured, which isn't an impossibility given our woeful injury record.

Maguire, Lindelof, Evans can provide back up. Shaw, too, if he stays fit but cannot play LWB. I think there will be quite a lot of rotation as well, no one or no combination will play every game, that’s pretty obvious.

Next season, I think we’ll sign 1-2 new CBs, depending on who will leave. Lindelof and Evans seem cert, TBD on Maguire given we have an 1-year option here.

Hypothetically, I'd like to see us try out the following

---------------------------------------Onana--------------------------------------------

--------------Yoro----------------De Ligt----------------Martinez----------------

---Mazraoui---- Casemiro/Mainoo-----Ugarte-----------Antony-----

---------------------Amad----------------------------Bruno---------------------------

---------------------------------------Hojlund--------------------------------------------

I'm not a big fan of Antony as a wide forward, but, I can see him being a very good left-wingback on the account that :-

1. He has the best defensive workrate of all the wingers that we have
2. Playing at LWB would remove the right-foot problem that he has
Agree with all except Antony. I think that will be Garnacho.

I imagine as critical the Ugarte-role is, we will need a back-up for that.

All this talk about intensity. I think Hojlund, Amad, Garnacho,Bruno, Mount, Ugarte, Mainoo, and the majority of our defenders can pull it off.
Big question mark over Rashford, Zirkzee and Casemiro.
Eriksen is definitely done.

I will be surprised he implements his 3-4-2-1 in the very first match with barely a few days of training.
Why wouldn't he? It's what he knows and it serves him best to implement it straight up and let the players acclimatize to it. Better they struggle and get the learning pains over with early on.

I’m just happy he wasn’t wearing a turtle neck. However, those Prada trainers can get in the bin.

We are fine for this season between Martinez, De Ligt, Yoro, Maguire, Lindelof and Evans. But you'd think we definitely need to look at 2 reinforcements for next season as at least two of Maguire/Lindelof/Evans will depart.

I would like us to get rid of Shaw as soon as possible, but Amorim might see him as a handy back up LCB.

When is he going to be unveiled and when is the first press conference? I like hearing the initial few when they are bullish and full of hope. Eventually they turn into monologues of excuses, escaping accountability and blaming everyone and everything other than them. :)

Although, this time I am more hopeful than I have been at any other time since Sir Alex called it a day. He is young and upcoming, has a decent squad at his disposal, is coming into a better situation structure wise and he seems to have the charisma that has been somewhat lacking from the last couple of appointments. Unlike ETH, who came from a club with a resource advantage over every other club in their league, he is coming here after breaking the two club hegemony in the Portuguese league. That makes me more confident in his abilities.

Good luck Ruben! Please make us competitive.

Words like "philosophy", "process", "system" etc just mostly translate into "I want to play Guardiola's type of football but can't so have to bore my team's fans to death and take us into negative goal difference until everyone has had enough.

Would have rather had Ruud here than this guy after Ruud's start and now that he's sacked Ruud then I've lost even more confidence in him.
Amazing post. Simply amazing.

Fletcher up for a 4th promotion in 5 years.

The worry is we only have 1 quick centre half out of those 6. If we're replacing Lindelof and Evans in the summer we need to start prioritising speed and athleticism

Thats the premise he is being brought in for.. if he doesn't implement it straight away, when can he? after the season?
