Ruben Amorim - Manchester United Head Coach

An elephant in the room here is we're going to playing 5 at the back while our defenders get injured so easily, there will be difficulty getting a consistent team. Even when a defender is on the pitch, they seem like they get injured far more often than other teams.

Sporting don't play with a back 5, they play with wingers as wingbacks.

Our wingers are suited to his style of play? I am assuming those wingers at Sporting must be working very hard in both attack and defence. Antony and Garnacho will be fine but will Rashford be able to play that role?

Nope, which is fine since it just means he won't play. We should stop trying to shoehorn Rashford in. He's not the consistent world beater that warrants building your team around. Either he adapts or he's gone, and that's how it should be for the entire squad from now.

Absolutely, and it's something we've seemingly ignored mostly for years in our recruitment
It would frustrate me when we’d come up against the top teams over the past decade and their players were machines who would run until the last whistle, whereas we’d praise players for half the effort.

Hopefully we sign some athletes who have speed and strength to allow us to dominate teams.

He corrected himself when he said the injured players were undergoing their return to injury programmes but that would certainly explain why Mount and Shaw are missing so often!
Is it Fergie walking the dog in the background? Keeping everything under surveillance.

Definately. It's no wonder we play the game with such a low intensity and tempo when our players are that slow and unathletic across the pitch. Can't be proactive and defend with a high line either so defenders retreating and leaving loads of space between defence and the midfield pushing up

Why do they look so weird?

This looks like a scene from a hypothetical Inbetweeners 3 movie set 20 years in the future where they've all actually grown up... Will's lost his hair, Neil has grown a beard and lives in Ibiza, Simon is still trying to impress Carly and thinks a turtle neck will help him accomplish that & Jay has become a slimeball salesman.

The "advantage" of this system is that, while the wide players will have to run A LOT up and down the field, their defensive responsibilities won't be as heavy as if they were actual fullbacks, because the CBs will help cover the sides.
So yes, they're gonna have to work a lot running up and down the field, they're not going to be "locked" into certain zones like fullbacks or wingers. They're creating and exploring gaps in the opponents' defensive line.

You don't think Rashford and Garnacho will be wing backs, do you?

You would be surprised how some players adapt to those roles.
His preference at Sporting was using wingers in those roles. Geny, Nuno Santos, Quenda, Maxi, they're all more wingers than fullbacks.
Maxi Araujo for example, played as winger in Toluca. In his 1st games he had a few difficulties tracking back and covering the players in his areas, but that has improved. Against city he was very good in marking savinho.

So while I get your concerns, don't sell the players short, they might be more capable than we expect.

Mount and Anthony could do as wing backs but Shaw looks like more natural until we replace him in summer

That can be answered two ways - short term and longer term. Until January, I expect him to try both full backs and wide attackers in the wingback positions and see what sticks. In January I expect he'll target a left wingback, and then from next summer I expect he'll cull any attackers that don't suit his system and buy another wingback option if no-one worked out.

Either way, calling it back 5 is a misnomer, because a back 5 involves 3 centre backs and 2 full backs, which isn't what he plays.

Apologies if this has been explained earlier in the thread, but why is Amorim still awaiting work permit / visa when he's been appointed for around two weeks now?

I'd have thought that process was started straight away and usually new player signings from abroad aren't delayed from making their debut for that length of time?

Has their been a late, unexpected issue with Amorim's? Or is it related to the unusual scenario whereby he carried on working in Portugal up until a couple of days ago so we could only start the process then?

Why would mount be used as a wing back? He’s more than likely gonna be used in one of the two behind the ST. Garnacho or Amad will probably play wingbacks at some point. At home against lower opposition.

Ye I think it’s the latter mate. I asked the exact same question yesterday. Someone said it’s because he was still working in Portugal and had to wait.

Yeah no elephants here.

It’s 3 CBs and a mix of fullbacks and wingers

Thanks. :+1:

That's OK then. It's the only scenario that I could think of that would explain the issue without it being very frustrating one way or another. At least the additional hold up makes sense then.

I think amad will adapt better as a wingback. Seem him tackle, nick the ball off stronger players. Garnacho on the other hand seems to duck out of aerial challenges. I’d rather keep Garnacho closer to opponent’s goal than to ours.

Dont put Shaw anywhere near your lineups. If Ruben has any sense he will be the first out the door.

Nice solid team that. Rasmus has width and crossing from the wingbacks and creativity through the middle. Better than having 3 shooting machines who get in each others way.

i was wondering if Shaw may make a miracle recovery to be back in time for next week. Seriously though his days are numbered, maybe his best position now would be left CB. But if he decides to mess about with England again he should be transfer listed, no offence England fans but i think you know what i mean.

3421 isn't a difficult system to teach simply because a lot of players are shown in training sessions or building out sessions the value of creating overloads...we have plenty of times seen our wingers come inside to receive a pass with the fullback overlapping to create the width...same principal applies it's just the starting point is a bit different plus the movements are a bit different

if a professional football player can't adjust...well simple truth is he shouldn't be at the club at this high a level

I think the above is the closest line-up to his Sporting side, with Maz also able to play as a RCB as he plays the inverted role in a back 4 in the 3-2-5 build up, also helps us build from the back.

We all know LWB is an issue no point going over it massively, I do wonder if Amass will get a couple of minutes or is he not physically ready.

This team is probably a good starting spot to build from, with the increased creativity, we can find out if Hojlund is going to score 20+.
