Ruben Amorim - Manchester United Head Coach

As a Sporting CP fan, I’d advise not getting your hopes too high initially. Ruben Amorim is a talented coach, but he’s also quite stubborn, and his tactical system can be complex for players to grasp right away. You’ll need to be patient—both for him to adapt to the Premier League and for the squad to fully understand his ideas. The winter and, more importantly, the summer transfer windows will be crucial for fine-tuning the squad.

During his time at Sporting CP, the tactical evolution was remarkable. However, the early months weren’t smooth. The real game-changer was the defensive solidity that led to his first league title. In his second season, player departures held back further progress. But by last year, his offensive ideas had started to take root, and the team became a nightmare for opponents despite having a short squad.

He might try to bring players like Nuno Mendes and Pedro Porro - key to his first title-winning team. Pedro Gonçalves could also be on his radar, given his importance in Sporting's setup (it is his favourite player).

The initial months will be about assessing the current squad. Players who don’t commit to the system or training standards, regardless of status, will be cur out from the squad - he values effort, adaptability and team work. The guy doesn't care about the reputation of players. When he arrived he cut out Marcus Acuña which was one of the top players and used Nuno Mendes, who was 17 at the time. Later, he cut out Mathieu which was a fan favourite and started with Gonçalo Inácio and even Eduardo Quaresma.

At Sporting, he didn’t control transfers; the scouts worked to find players fitting his vision. Yet, he occasionally made specific requests. Not always the best option. Ricardo Esgaio was a specific request and he was horrible. The same happen with Paulinho that only develop his full potential last season.

Give him time and trust him.

Great post. Thanks!

In contrast? I mean, people were pretty much praising Ten Hag's charisma and ability to communicate when he first joined us?
Yeah they weren’t. I’m not sure where you got that from?

It was even reported that Spurs ruled outTen Hag, when looking to replace Mourinho, due to having concerns about his language skills and lack of charisma.

I desperately want Amorim to succeed, but go take a look at all Sportings goals this season. Damn some of the teams in that league are woeful. It certainly won’t be quite so easy and makes me wonder if this glorious 3,4,3 will be as transformative as we think.

Good luck Ruben. He’s gonna need it

He's done it in the CL as well and against both Spurs and Arsenal

As a portuguese, his english obviously seems far from perfect, but definately more than enough to get his point across (with low chance for misunderstandings) and to get lots of good quotes from him.
How do english fans feel about his english?

His English is great imo. Won't have any difficulties moving to an English league.

Easy to say that now. If city offered him the job before us he’d be theirs. I’ve always said the first big club to come in for him he’ll choose.
Takeaway for me is he's a smart politician. Not a bad asset whilst he's with us

Doesn't really bother me. No doubt he'll improve once he's in England and immersed in it every day, which is always the best way to improve your language skills.

Most of the squad speaks either Portuguese or Spanish anyway.

He thought Viana would try to recruit him. It's clear that Viana has been told that Pep is leaving at end of contract and that Ruben would be the obvious candidate.
No that’s not what was asked and that’s not what was said. He was asked if he could see himself managing City. He said yes it certainly crossed his mind. In the sense that if any big club would come for him, he could imagine himself managing them.

“Obviously it is one [thing] that crossed my mind,” Amorim said of the possibility of managing City. “But I never had any doubts about the club I wanted to work for and my decision has been made. I was not undecided about it. I wanted Manchester United.”

On the game v City;

“If the result is negative, expectations will drop which may be a good thing, but if we win they [the United fans] will think that the new Alex Ferguson has arrived,” he joked.

He just comes across so well. And he says a lot without actually saying a lot, if that makes sense.

Yeah, I was actually impressed...never heard him speak before tbh, but he has something about him.

Nice little interview

Actually quite sad how different he seems

Surely we aren’t about to break another one :wenger:

Actually quite scary how you can actually visibly see how managing this club breaks people's spirit. Ole aged years.

If it wasn’t before, it would seem the season is a write off/free hit for Amorim now - with plenty saying he will take time to improve and develop the team, so why not use it to blood youngsters and get a sense of where we really are. There is bound to be big name casualties so we should look to replace them from the academy this season. I’m thinking Amass, Kone, Martin, Mantato, Fletcher etc… really give them a good go and see how they fare in the men’s game.

holy moly that's horrific

We need to do something about our attack. Going to a 343 with Bruno taking on one of the 3 positions helps. I do see Hojlund improving, but if he doesn't, I think we would be smart to take a look at Osimhen .

One of Garnacho or Amad need to step up to claim the third spot in that attack, if neither can't, then it may be time to cash in on one of them, as we need some consistently dangerous attacking threat coming from our attack.
