Ross Barkley

It's not the same situation as Phil Jones. Barkley is at a big club that could compete for the top 4, not relegation fodder

True Everton are a bigger club with huge history...and he may well be an Everton supporter but realistically United will always be the most glamorous club in the world and like Rooney he will want to come where he is likely to win everything. Even the most ardent Everton supporter will realistically admit they do not have the financial clout to outbid the big money clubs. Rooney saw this too...and eventually came here.

I've made this point about Powell before but it seems just as applicable to Barkley. Young players such as Powell and Barkley can be given less defensive responsibility by playing further forward while they develop. Doesn't mean they can't drop back when they get some experience.

A Powell and Barkley midfield for us would be incredible.

Jones and Wilshere are two who have being performing at a similar level for a longer time than Barkley anyway.

then he will cost a fortune...not that we are going to get him cheap in the summer.

I mean for his own development. There's no rush to move from Everton yet. He'll be under the excellent guidance of Roberto Martinez, playing good football with Everton and he'd get a lot more appearances for them than if he were to move to a 'bigger' club.

think he will get lots of games with us tbh.

Really? Depends on who's leaving and coming in next summer. He plays as a no.10 for Everton right now, and we have Rooney, Kagawa and Adnan in those positions. He'd need to be slowly integrated to a deeper position if you want him to play as a CM. I think it's too early for him to move further back.

I would imagine we could buy him before the World Cup with the option of loaning him to Everton for the first half of next year. It would sweeten the deal for both sides in that it would ensure he gets plenty of minutes under Martinez and would allow us to buy him at a stage before his valuation rises to ridiculous levels. If he does well enough, we could use him for the 2nd half of the 14/15 season. In the interim, we buy the elusive world class midfielder this summer.

World class midfielder at Manchester United you say? *sniggers*

In all seriousness, Everton won't let him go in January if that's what you're suggesting. Even before the WC, we'd have to pay an arm and a leg for him considering, as amol said, we bought Fellaini off them for 27.5m. Typing that number out numerous times only makes Fellaini's price all the more depressing. Not to mention there'd probably be a bidding war for him amongst the top English clubs and I can't see United winning a bidding war against the likes of Chelsea and City.

Not in Jan - but late season before summer. He still needs the 2nd half of this year to develop, and poshly part of next year.

Lets be honest, he's going to cost a staggering amount with a bidding war between all the big clubs in the league. Everton will of course ask for as much as they possibly can, I'm thinking it'll be around £35-40 million after Chelsea and City have their say, which is a huge amount of money.

Fact is that he's a talented player, no doubt about that. But if we're going to be paying that kind of money, I'd rather it be spent on a proper central midfielder i.e. Gundogan, serious bids for Fabregas. Barkley isn't what we need at this moment in time.

We are likely to spend big this summer so he wouldn't be the only player. Hard to see whats in store for CM given Fletcher's return, and the likes of Jones and Giggs filling in the gaps.

Giggs should be retiring next season and we still don't know how good Fletch will be after 2 years out of the game. But yeah I can definitely see the club spending big next summer with many outgoing players as well.

Quite the opposite.

‘I owe (Moyes) everything. He brought me on as a player and looked after me when I had broken my leg. I was out for a while with a hernia and a broken foot, too.'

I don't see why anyone would expect him to hold a grudge against Moyes for loaning him out. Teenage footballer in getting loaned-out shocker! It was good for his development and he got chances under Moyes when he wasn't out on loan.

Fair play. There is definitely a quote floating about from the last 10 days or so where Barkley says he was excited about Martinez's appointment because he would be giving him a chance. I will do my best to dig it out.

Doesn't really point to him not believing that under Moyes. Just him pointing out the he knew they was hiring a manager that would give him a chance.

We would probably knock his attacking instincts out of him and make him another Anderson. He should stay at Everton for a few years.
