Right now I can see him as Ramsey. More of an attacking b2b
Ramsey's defensive work is quite good and usually overlooked, I don't see Barkley being good enough as an all-rounder to play as a b2b.

He'll probably need two very disciplined sitters, like Gerrard had with Alonso and Mascherano. Then basically given room to do as he likes.

The key thing with Barkley and Sterling would be to stay away from Injuries.
Look what happened to Wilshere, Walcott, Chamberlain, Smalling and Jones(he still is right up there IMO, but he would have been so much more mature without the injuries).

Just scored an absolute worldie with a wonderful run from deep. We should break the bank for him in the summer he would be an excellent alternative to strootman.

Barkley is a completely different player to Strootman. We also already have Herrera as more of an attacking midfielder that can play deep. A player like Barkley, no matter how good he is, is the last thing we need currently imo.

We absolutely do not need Barkley. Our midfield is well stocked as it is and if we are to buy another player it has to be someone who can dictate the pace of play. He is talented but we have Herrera, Mata and Rooney who occupy similar spaces on the pitch, no need to add to that.

Barkley has been poor lately. Everyones been talking about it. But one goal and someone pops up with "United must break the bank for him". Typical.

I have no idea how he's been playing lately but this is the first time I've seen him play this deep and it definitely looks like his best position.

In all the games I've seen him play this season he's struggled to get into the game as a #10. Tonight he is playing as a CM and the deeper position seems to really suit him, his positioning and passing has been excellent, never mind the goal.

I'm not advocating buying him but the idea that Herrera and Mata offer the same qualities he does is bizarre.

I have watched him few times this year and I don't think he has improved much over the years. He broke on the scene when he was what, 17? He is 21 in few days, so he isn't even that young.

Nice goal btw.

Agreed.

I think he suits the deeper role much more. He's very technically gifted, and can play with both feet but I don't think his vision in the final third is all that, although he an play a pass when he's deeper. When he's further up the pitch he tend to run a lot of blind alleys with the ball, but he's very good at making space to receive the ball when deeper.

You lose a lot of his driving runs when he's further up the pitch which is arguably his greatest asset.

I'm thinking he's been absolute class tonight, not just his goal, hardly ever panics in possession, always knows what he wants to do with the ball before he gets it, shows football intelligence in spades.
How old is he now? looks a quality, quality player to me.

I don't think anyone is saying that they offer the same qualities, just that they occupy the same areas on the pitch and that we could do with a more defensive minded midfielder rather than another one that prefers to attack.

I really like him, but to me he's one of those players that we'd have to work with to fit into our team, rather than being a perfect fit and what we need from the start. When you factor in that he'll probably cost 50 million at minimum, it doesn't seem like the wisest investment.

The best young English talent. Said it in the Sterling thread.

Barkley is he stays injury free will go on to be one of the best players in the league.

Fair enough, but I personally think he'd be an upgrade if he develops on track. His power, technique, speed and passing are very good and he can turn a team from defense to attack in the blink of an eye. If we are moving to 4-3-3 I think he could be ideal in that midfield with Carrick and Strootman as one of the box to box CM's.

But where does Di maria play then? He'd probably have to take the box-box spot in the Three.

As part of the front 3 with Rooney and a new wide attacker.

I don't Think that role suits Di Maria as well as being the most advanced in CM. He's looked half the player when he's played wide for us. And is Barkley good enough to move Di maria from his best position? Not yet i'd say.

I'd rather use him in the box to box role. I think he's a bigger talent than Strootman, and I don't see him lacking any major quality that Strootman would bring if he came. Especially after his injury. I could be very wrong though.

IMO Barkley has the potential to become equivalent with Yaya Touré in a few years with his combination of physique and skill.

I don't think LvG sees a CM in Di Maria, he likes CM's who keep possession and I also think he wants physicality in midfield as that has been the main reason Fellaini is starting, he mentioned early on how the physical aspect of the PL had taken him by surprise.

Even taking Barkley out of it for a moment, if we move to LvG's preferred 4-3-3 I think Carrick/Rooney/Strootman are the likely trio we'll use in there despite the fact I'm not keen on Rooney in midfield. I think LvG will give Di Maria a floating wide role as opposed to asking him to play as an actual winger, he'll be more of a wide forward.
