Ron Vlaar

I'm not interested in this player, he's not better than Jones. No.

That's actually a really good shout. Although Villa might rate Vlaar too highly to consider it.

I suppose it also depends on Cleverley. If he wants an auction for his signature in the Summer, it's unlikely that he'll accept £40-50k a week now, thinking that maybe someone like QPR will come in and offer £70-80k later. To me Villa & Cleverley seem a perfect fit, they have a young English midfield of Delph/Westwood that he slots into perfectly in his preferred advanced midfield role and are at a level where he can be quite a big fish and showcase his talent, which seems to suit his personality. If he does want to move on to a Liverpool/Spurs level for his peak 3-4 years then Villa for the next 2 is the perfect place to do this.

The only other thing is if he did actually want to go to Everton and work again with Martinez and they're still interested. They may have promised him a good salary if he runs his contract down.

I'd imagine if we had a list of players we would like to get for the CB position, he may be on it, but nowhere near the top. Still, I do think he has really shown his worth over the last few season. Could be an interesting addition if he did come.

Debatable, infact Jones hasn't exactly been great for us at CB, hes done good jobs in midfield at times but at CB maybe the first few games this season he played well, other than that he has looked suspect.

If Ron Vlaar plays for us as he played for the Dutch in Brazil, I'd welcome him with open arms.
Problem is he hasn't stuck out in the Villa team last year OR this year, anyone can have a few great games, doesn't make him a great player

He actually has. They got considerbally worse defesinvely when he got injured. Didn't they have one of the best defences in the league at the start of the season?

I know he's not a CB but I think Alan Hutton stood out the most in Villa's defence at the start of this season and he certainly would'nt be talked about as a potential United signing

Im not saying we should sign Vlaar but your talking as if he hasn't been playing very well for Villa when he clearly has.

I don't want him here but that isn't true, they'd have gone down last year if it wasn't for him.

No I'm just saying I think people are getting carried away with his for during the World Cup, I think he's a good player, just nothing more.

He was voted their second best player last season behind Delph. He has very much stuck out like a shining beacon in their terrible defense, particularly last season but even shone in their first 3 games before his injury where they only conceded once. He was also voted their player of the season the year before. That along with his great World Cup means he has stuck out like a sore thumb in shit teams for over 2 seasons.

He should only be regarded as an absolute last-resort. The type we sign for £20m the minute before a transfer window closes, and that's only because everyone including McNair, Thorpe and Mike Keane are injured.

It can be hard to judge centre backs (and DMs for that matter) without intricately picking over every detail of performances, but there must be alternatives to Hummels, Shawcross, Laporte and the others I have seen linked.

Another problem with buying CBs is that they don't really come good until they are 29/30, and buying players at this age doesn't seem like a wise thing to be doing.

Just saw that he's injured again. Even the CBs linked with us are cursed....

Smalling is comfortably superior in every facet of defending. Gone are the days we spend our transfer market shopping at Netto. If and when we sign a defender they will be an excellent one. The kind that has won titles, proven themselves to be great and played at the highest level. Names like Mats Hummels and Diego Godin are being parroted to the journalists on the beat and I'd like to think Woodward is aiming to get this brand of player on board.

This. People need to get a grip like.

Worked under Van Gaal, looks good in 352 and he's Dutch.

I wanted him in the summer and after today I'm even more baffled we didn't put a good bid in for him. Especially considering the lack of available quality CBs lately.

He'd be a good signing. Not in terms of muppet appeal, but will make us stronger defensively.

If we want to sign a centre half we need to be looking towards someone who'll considerably improve us, Vlaar wouldn't.

We aren't going to get the muppet dream defender in January. Hummels and Subotic are playing for a releation threatened Dortmund. Vlaar is needed for our defence and urgently or it will be our downfall.

Nothing to do with muppetry. He's 30 years old and no better than those already at the club. Evans is having a shocking run of form but still has a defensive CV that puts Ron Vlaar's down the tip.

There's talk of Diego Godin. A La Liga-winning defender that was five minutes away from winning a Champions League title. That is the calibre of defender we need to bring to the club, if at all possible.

Subotic doesn't look anywhere near good enough this season. He's been dreadful. Vlaar has been way better.

It doesn't need to be a "muppet dream" defender, just someone better than our current lot. Vlaar isn't of that ilk, he's similar to a few who've been linked with moves from midtable teams to the top like Davies, Williams, Reid, Shawcross etc. They're all good defenders, but they aren't going to turn an average defence into a great one.

I definitely agree on Godin. I don't think he will be available in Jan with his club competing for the league and CL.

You know what, I'd take him over Evans or some of the other jokers in our team. Look at Bayern, they signed Dante, who was a at a similar age, and he went on to have a spectacular year in their treble season and is still a good player for them now.

I agree, it appears doubtful from an outside perspective. If that's the case, then we're best waiting until the summer until these players are available.

We buy Vlaar in January then we've got five central defenders on the books. And even then, people will still want another, better defender in the summer. That's six. Then who you sell? I think we'd be left with a situation whereby we're selling both Smalling and Jones even though they're younger and better than Vlaar himself.

We don't need more young defenders anyway. Our next CB should be an experienced player.

Evans would be gone for me and I don't think both McNair and Blackett would get gametime. I like McNair.
