If we sell Evans and loan out McNair then Vlaar would be a good squad player.
No he wouldn't as he can't stay fit enough. If we're going to bring in a limited player as back up then the absolute minimum requirement is that they're not injury prone.
Vlaar would be a waste of time, effort, wages and space.
To be fair that was only this year when that happened. Previously he hardly had been injured.
When I made this thread I think it would have been a good signing (excluding the hindsight of knowing his injury record this year). Now though, regardless of injury, I still wouldn't want him signed as we need quality there rather than quantity.
That really isn't true. Villa fans have been on about him being injury prone for a while, especially with this recurring (and I heard degenerative?) calf problem that has been hindering him for at least the last two years. Even in the seasons where he's played a lot of games he's still carried niggling problems that have stopped them from building a settled back four.
Beyond that he had a nightmare run of injuries when he was younger too, breaking a bone bone in foot, then doing his cruciate, then getting a bacterial infection, then damaging his medial ligament, then doing the same cruciate again. Add in his advancing age and he would have been a poor signing at any point imo.
Your in your right to have your opinions but your "injury prone" comment is just wrong. He hasn't missed many games bar this year. A quick google search would even tell you that. "niggling problems" while playing is highly ambiguous and judgemental and frankly his performances previously hadn't shown signs of that.
Anyway, this is a fruitless debate.
Given how disinterested people are in international football, I think it's amazing how PL fans have been drawn in by a few good games at the WC. He's bang average and his performances since he arrived to England have proven that. Hoping he'll be able to permanently raise his game to a level he hasn't come close to for years, on the basis of a few good international performances, is beyond optimism, IMO.
I won't lie. That's tough to hear.Villa fans I know were singing his praises last season
When I was in uni last year I had a few Villa mates who couldn't sing his praises enough and claimed they would have surely gone down without him. This was obviously before the world cup too.I'm inclined to believe their testament which goes against your 'proof' of bang averageness. Still not saying we should go for him mind. He's definitely not a great player on the ball and also injury prone. Solid defensively though.
I have a soft spot for Villa and watch most of their matches and their fans are right he was fantastic for them and carried the team on his back at times which was remarkable considering who he was playing alongside. He definitely isn't bang average and if he was younger he'd be a good buy but alas he isn't younger.Villa fans I know were singing his praises last season

Let's sign Cillesen, Janmaat, Bruno Martines Indi and De Jong while we are at it.
Still think so after today ?If we sell Evans and loan out McNair then Vlaar would be a good squad player.
Still think so after today ?
To be fair, the whole Villa team did, I'm just glad they saved their best performance of the season for the semi-final.Didn't watch the match today but I'm guessing he had a shit game!
