Ron Vlaar

SAF was 2-for-4 on this. Homeruns on Ferdinand and Rooney, struckout on Poborsky and Kleberson.
Your examples are perfect

Ferdinand was already fantastic in the 1 1/2 season for Leeds (CL semi-final and all that) and he was on our radar before the World Cup.
Rooney was on our transfer minds too.....we just have bought him earlier because of his great tournament in Portugal and Newcastle's big interest.

But i doubt Poborsky and Kleberson were in our plans before their great tournaments.

Vlaar has looked fantastic in Brazil and is a decent defender.....but he should really not a transfer target for us........we must look for the likes of Hummels's, Varane's, Godin's or Laporte's in the world if we want go back to the level of Bayern Munich, Real Madrid or Chelsea.

Vlaar is not a United signing. Neither has the quality to improve us nor the right age.

Agree he's neither the standard we should be looking at or a long term solution but I'd have willingly paid 1.5m for him this window as a stop gap until the summer signings of Hummels and Verane! If it would have meant never having to use Carrick in defence again it's well worth it. Villa wanted to cash in before his contract expired and LvG was a big fan after the WC so I could see that happening … in a way I suppose we dodged a bullet.

Varane won't be leaving Real Madrid. The quality of defenders across Europe is declining and Real Madrid have a great young CB in their squad. They have no reason to sell and he has no reason to leave. Pepe is getting old and soon enough Varane will be a nailed on starter.

There's some reason behind signing him for a small fee now to add to our weak defence but what's the point if he's going to be injured for another 6-8 weeks and then will probably take a couple of weeks to recover and get back to form anyway? If you're going to sign someone as a stop gap signing at least ensure that he can actually play for you.

a year ago this does sound impossible but with united and real madrid now, anything can happen.

we went on to sign di maria, the man of the match of last year's CL final. we signed falcao on 1st september. we've just made victor valdes our number 2 GK (remain this for years to come hopefully)

FM stuffs from van gaal obviously :drool::drool:

You pick on the one line of mine that was tongue in cheek and you don't bother to even put it in context.

I wrote "until the summer signings of Hummels AND Verane" of course I was joking!

Everyone knows that we're gonna buy them this window instead!

Haha, fair enough. One can dream I suppose. :)

Not going to happen, he's a good defender but that's about it. Injury prone, old and not great on the ball. Doesn't fit van Gaal's style.

Be fine with it on a free. McNair could go on loan then, and Vlaar takes his place.

Most likely bs anyway. He would be a pointless signing even for free. We have already enough defenders for numbers, we need a quality addition and not a Ron Vlaar.

No No, let's not get carried away. Depay is a talented player who outgrew the Eredivisie and Vlaar ( a solid defender) will hit the age of 31 next year and surely that is not the pond we are fishing in.

He's be injured so many times this season on top of all his injuries from previous years. No, no, no, no, no.

I think there are better options out there really. One things for sure he's not staying at Villa, stripped of the captaincy.

If it's a freebie then I don't see why not, he wouldn't be on huge wages. We need more squad depth next season so I'd take him.

He made sense for about 5 minutes in November when our defence was all over the shop. If we sign him now, with the choice we have, it would be insanity, free transfer or not.

No, we shouldn't do that mistake again, signing players on a cheap to fill up squad numbers. A club like us should always look for improvement and signing quality players who want to get in the starting 11, doesn't mean we need 11 superstars, but good players who improve us or have great potential, there is always room for improvement.

Especially the CB this summer should be a top option and if we can't get one of those then at least a young one who can turn into one, not a 30-year-old average defender with tons of injuries.

I remember when the LVG's Barça had 12 dutch players.

Maybe he wants to do the same, but Vlaar or De Jong don't add nothing to the squad.

I would of said yes in November after the impressive campaign he put in the World Cup. Now, i say no. Got terrible injury problems and he'll just turn into deadwood IMO and United has enough of them as it is. He'll be alright as squad player but United needs players pushing to get into the starting line up, need players competing for places. Vlaar would just rot away on the bench like Evans is. No thank you.

Vlaar certainly doesn't add anything IMO, but I think De Jong would be a reasonbly handy squad player, as much as I don't really like him. Especially as we are currently short of midfielders who can play a deeper role.

Then again, I'd be hoping we could bring in better options than him this summer.

Would be an awful move on our part. Thank god it's only Metro reporting it.
