Ron Vlaar

Smalling comfortably better, Jones better. I don't see the point in signing another squad player. What we need and what I suspect we'll go out for is a top defender like Godin, Hummels or Garay.

I agree, it appears doubtful from an outside perspective. If that's the case, then we're best waiting until the summer until these players are available.

We buy Vlaar in January then we've got five central defenders on the books. And even then, people will still want another, better defender in the summer. That's six. Then who you sell? I think we'd be left with a situation whereby we're selling both Smalling and Jones even though they're younger and better than Vlaar himself.

I think Van Gaal is evaluating the futures of Smalling, Evans, Jones et al this year and based on what he sees, will buy appropriate defenders in the summer.

I think so. I see Smalling as the pick of the bunch, but my gut reckons that Van Gaal quite likes Evans. I don't have much to base that on, just a gut feeling. All three are playing for their futures from now 'til the end of the season, you're right there.

I agree with this, I just hope they can hold themselves together long enough for us to get in the Top 4.

Is he actually left footed? As I don't want a CB bought merely to enable us to continue playing this shitty 3-5-2 formation. I also think his age and the fact he's often injured makes him an unlikely buy as LvG and Woody said no short term fixes.

This is just so dumb.

I'd rather see McNair and even Blackett (who I don't rate that highly) get games for us than signing Ron Vlaar. At least we then we learn something about those lads, where as we already know Vlaar is a 30 year decent midtable defender who we would/should immediately be looking to upgrade on in the summer. Like what's the point? He'll help us get err... 3rd/4th where we'll finish anyway.

Nah he's right footed.

Keep ignoring the fact the guy had a great game and looks very happy in a back three and showed real leadership.

He made our CB's look complete shit.

That isn't difficult at times. Unless Carrick plays there, which we don't want, there isn't a calm head amongst them.

People worrying about Blackett or Mcnair, if they are good enough they will play. I am personally more worried about Evans and Jones, they both look so uncomposed and shakey our defence looks worried every time they play.

Okore and Clark have performed better this season and played just as well today

Composure is the key word. Carrick has it in defence and midfield. Those two always look in full panic mode. I like Smalling if he can keep fit.

Would we even be considering him as an option if he wasn't Dutch? He will be 30 by the time we sign him and he will want a 4 or 5 year contract. He's becoming as injury prone as the rest of our back line.

His age doesn't bother me as such as I think he would also sign another younger CB, it's his injury record that would bother me.

His contract expires at the end of the season so we could probably get him for peanuts if we wanted him.

Not convinced, but if he can organise a defence that's something the rest of our lot don't give me a lot of confidence in doing.

Make him a coach, nobody else seems to be coaching them.

To play for us he'd take a three year deal and be an upgrade on the gutless lot we have. His injury record isn't great and that's why I wouldn't sign him, but I think we will.
I reckon LVG is going to dismatle much of the defense we have at the moment.

One of the Sir Alex era CB's will be left by this time next season.

I'd go along with that, however given his injury record, and the length of contract he would want I think his age has to be taken into consideration on this occasion.

I really hope we don't, I want a solid back four who can play 90% of games as a unit.

I think I'm destined just not to 'get' him. He's second rate (at best).

Vlaar would be fine at United. But at 29 we should obviously be looking somewhere else and someone who is fit more often. And while he'd do fine, he isn't someone who would bring the defence to a much better level like the best CBs in the world would

His signing wouldn't make much sense IMO. Not an upgrade on what we have and if I am not mistaken he is injury prone too.

If we go for someone, I hope we go for Laporte. Young, already better than any defender we have, and is a left footer which is good considering that our LCB (Rojo and Evans - though Evans is right footed) aren't as good as our RCB (Smalling and Jones).

He has found his niche at a place like Villa. Not a player aspiring to be an elite team.

If we can't get Hummels (which is extremely unlikely in spite of Dortmund's bad form) then we should definitely go for Vlaar.

Why not go for Godin?

I wouldn't say no to him either. I just feel that Vlaar has performed very well at Villa and for the Dutch national team, van Gaal knows him well having also worked with him at AZ briefly. We know he can play in a 3-5-2 system comfortably.

Have you seen how much of this season he's already missed with injury? Hardly inspires confidence....

We can get him for free in 6 months, as long as we don't spend over 5 million we should go for him in Jan.

Reckon a deal is already in place anyway with Cleverly going there, depending on how much Januzaj is going to play for the remainder of the season we could send him to Villa as a sweetner. Their counter attacking football will suit him.

What part of no interest do people not understand? He'd have no reason to come out and say that if we're talking to him or have a deal in place. He can just sit tight and let it happen.

No he's going to come out and lie for no particular reason? Crazy

Family are Villa fans, they don't feel he's utd quality. Defenders are coming back to fitness and I think LVG will want to see Smalling and Jones play together before making any decision I'm guessing.

People are looking at this potential move the wrong way in my opinion. This isn't about Jones, Rojo, Smalling, Evans or even McNair and Blackett. This isn't about Vlaar's quality and if he is United material or not. This is about cementing top 4. Nothing more. 5-10million? It means nothing when we are talking about making it or missing out on Europe.

If this was to go ahead it would be purely based on having another experienced CB around the make sure we get top 4. It's not about the future, it's not about looking to the development of young CB's, it is simply to make the squad stronger and in a better position to cope with certain situations that might come up between February and May.

I'm not going to say we will do a Leeds if we miss out on the top 4 but it would be close to a disaster for us, so we can't look to next year this January, we have to get this job done now, if any business is done in January, I don't care what spin the club put on it, it's with the short term in mind and rightly so.
