Romelu Lukaku | Napoli watch

He will be a good purchase for Inter Milan; he will score them a lot of goals.

Didn't have a great season, but the rest of Manutd were crap as well.

Here’s his 17/18 stats - https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/romelu-lukaku/leistungsdaten/spieler/96341/plus/0?saison=2017

Obviously got off to a great start, but the stats become incredibly average from the 0-0 with Liverpool onward.

This is the exact nonsense people were accusing him of during that season though. Here is my post addressing it at the time:

Yeah I mean before today he hasn't had a good game since...oh wait, last weekend, when he got us through in the FA Cup by basically creating AND scoring both of our goals.

...before that you have to go all the back to...oh wait, the game immediately before that, when he was our best player by a mile against Newcastle and should have had three or four assists but for terrible finishing from his team mates.

...and before that you have to go all the way back to...oh right, the game before that, when he scored for us against Huddersfield again when we were struggling to break them down.

...Before that...Burnley, which was only a week or so before that, where he beat two defenders on his own to set up our winning goal.

He scored in the game before that against Stoke

...he scored in the FA Cup game before that despite only coming on late in the game.

Before that you have to go back a whole 2 appearances from him to find another goal and good performance against West Brom.

The game before that he won us the game against Bournemouth

Then you have to go back a whole 1 game to find him scoring against CSKA

The game before that he was excellent against Arsenal

A week before that he won us the game against Brighton.

We're all the way back into the middle of November now, and it just carries on like this until you get right back to the start of the season. The closest you get to a run of him being rubbish is when he didn't do anything useful for three weeks around the end of October...except we only played two games in this period

The existence of this thread is one of the stupidist things this forum has ever coughed up. It's insultingly idiotic. We are at a point where the main reason we are winning any games at all is Lukaku's coontribution, and he's being talked about as if he's our worst player.

The fact is he has a very good first season. 28 goals is good in itself, then you have games like Arsenal and Burnley away, Chelsea and Spurs at home, where his build up play and chajce creation directly set up goals which won us the game. He can be a fabtastic player when he wants to be. The problem is he seems to have trouble with the "when he wants to be" part.

Who's gonna provide for his assists now that Perisic is as good as gone?

To be fair he averaged 0.48 goals per game at Everton and 0.42 at United. From a statistical standpoint he did his job and gave United the ability that they paid for aside from his 12 match drought with Mourinho leading up to his sacking...He did start last season flying though before it went down hill. Ole pretty much froze him out when he arrived but we forget he was on a hat trick against PSG and he let Rashford take the pen at the last minute.

I feel for him a bit because from a United fans perspective I think he's been a bit hard done by because of the lack of success in results.

He didn't let Rashford take the penalty. Lukaku doesn't take penalties because he's shocking at them. There can't be many other strikers with such little appetite for taking penalties, especially given his reputation for finishing.

Not sure why people are comparing his first season to last season, There was serious lack of giving a feck last season and turning into mark henry further limited his already limited overall play.

Now at least he has Perisic to provi.........Never mind.

I don't know how much to read into it but he does seem to have become more miserable over time.

Compare his first interview at Everton with that Inter one. There's a lot more depth to his responses in the Everton one:

I don't think Ole froze him out. He actually wasn't available for selection for Ole's first couple of weeks, and somehow at the same time Rashford managed to have the form of his career (so far). The manager basically had no choice at that point but to continue playing Rashford. Lukaku still scored some goals even coming off the bench.

My opinion is that he's a better player than he showed last season and there's certainly something that greatly affected him. Whether that was Mourinho's management, personal problems, etc. I don't know but I feel like he'll be a good player for Inter.

Both seasons he had 2 month spells where he didnt score a goal and the problem with Lukaku is if he isnt scoring he just gets in the way.

I heard that the second the planes wheels hit the tarmac in Milan they bounced off and it landed in Rome by accident.
Perhaps he misjudged the flight.

Harsh!

I heard he missed the flight because he was standing still and missed the call for the gate, then he was too slow to get there in time

But gave a thumbs up and small clap still?

At a human level, I feel for him. Looks like he is totally lost his spark in the Inter interview. Anyone watching that could say he is not 100% in the conversation. There is a lot happening inside his head. Jose really messed him up last season it seems.

No reason why he should have behaved the way he did to get out of the club, and there will be games in the season where we will be desperately short of a striker. I’m surprised that he was the first few to get the cull from the squad. I guess if you sulk around when you’re no longer first choice, that’s what happens.

Its not Jose...

Imagine you're at one of the biggest clubs in world football as its second most expensive signing ever. Then you're told that you're surplus to requirements and that you dont provide enough quality to hang around after 2 seasons.

Added to this, some halfwit who doesn't seem to have a clue about sports science tells you to bulk up which has a net negative effect on your performance.

Its easy to say to somebody, why dont you slim down but when its muscle isnt not that easy.

Agreed with most of the things you said but muscle is the first thing your body jettisons when on a calorific deficit. He could have lost muscle with ease if he just did some long distance running away from training.

That's probably the easiest thing to accomplish in all the various fitness goals

Exactly. Caloric deficit + decrease of strength training and he'd lose muscle mass easily over time.

When you're a professional athlete, you cannot just run at a calorie deficit. You're entire job is based of athletic performance and when you're in caloric deficit, you're not going to extract peak performance or anywhere close to it.

Considering how finely tuned these athletes are, all of them run at level of performance that is measured in small increments.

There's this great youtube channel called GCN which focus on performance attributes of cyclists (I know its not football but its all relative to endurance athletes). They recently discussed the net affect of running on a calories deficit diet and found that performance decreased by nearly 20% which in the world of cycling (or any sport) is as much as not training for nearly two weeks.

Now Rom could have gone away on his break and focused on this, but then to run at a calorie deficit like he needs, he'd destroy the tail half of next season as he'd have had no time offer for his body to recover.

As shit as it sounds, the best thing for Rom would probably be a mid range injury and then focus on jettisoning the muscle during that period.

As I meant, if he's playing week in and week out, its incredibly difficult to drop the muscle.

He probably is exhausted from travelling, signing paper work, doing medicals etc.

Clearly, that halfwit was a part of the coaching staff under Jose - who thought this will be good for his holdup play. Also, it's not that difficult for professional sportsmen to lose 'bulked up' muscle. With the level of sports science, you can change your food and your work out regime to shift from pure 'weightlifting' muscle, to lean muscle. Clearly, he was given a plan over the summer to do exactly that - but he turned up without following it (since he was sure he wants to leave). Explains why he didn't play in preseason, and Ole kept saying he is 'not fit'.

Lukaku himself said in an interview that he bulked up for the WC, so maybe Belgian staff would have recommended him.

The guy was overweight. He clocked in at 105kg (16.5st) after the World Cup, for a man of 190cm (6'3') that puts him at overweight and almost obese on the BMI scale. However, we'll give him the benefit of the doubt due to muscle he was carrying and say he was just overweight.

I said it at the time when people on here were defending him and saying he was lean. You look at peak Drogba, Zlatan, Cavani, literally any class striker and they're shredded, well under 10% body fat. Lukaku was more or less around 15%.

Either way - there is no reason why he couldn't have fit into Ole's squad. I was a big fan of his at West Brom and Everton, and was really pleased with his first season. A motivated Lukaku could easily be an asset for this squad. I am super disappointed with the way he has conducted himself from the day he stopped being no.1. I think he just lost faith in Ole - and wanted out. Good for everyone involved I must say.

I assume you mean couldn't......First touch, work rate and dribbling come to mind.

Yes, i mean't couldn't. (fixed).

He wouldn't start because of those reasons in big games, but against teams in the lower half of the table, his other attributes would be needed. I'm hoping Martial can develop those this season - for e.g. heading, movement in 6 yard box etc.
