Keane was always a fair player but a 13 goal-a-season merchant. He's improved in the last couple of years but is still short of top class. I wouldn't be paying £18M for him or anywhere near.

Agree with this. He's OK. United were interested when he was younger but wouldn't touch him with a bargepole now. Benitez has to cut his cloth according to his budget presumably. And if the fee that's been published is right - Spurs have confirmed it I think? - it's more proof that he doesn't know what he's doing.

HOw many of his goals last year, were pennos? (his 5 in the League Cup against reserve opposition does boost his figures)

£18M is a right price for him.

Strikers can hang around more than midfielders and if Benetiz can get three good seasons out of him, the deal should be justified.

As for Keane, teriffic player..we should've gone after him instead of Berbatov.

Someone get him the pills, quick!!:lol:

It's a fair Kop - Liverpool land £19million Keane and then say sorry to Spurs

Liverpool apologised to Tottenham on Monday night and made a charitable donation to their Barclays Premier League rivals as Robbie Keane's £19million move to Anfield reached a bizarre conclusion.

In return, Spurs dropped an official complaint accusing Liverpool of tapping up Keane before the Republic of Ireland striker demanded a move

However, Liverpool's unprecedented gesture did little to appease furious Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, who claimed his club had been forced into accepting a deal that could eventually rise to £20.3m.

'I don't regard it as a transfer deal,' said Levy. 'That's something which happens between clubs when they both agree to trade. This is very much an enforced sale.

'I was incredibly disappointed when I first heard not only that Liverpool had been working behind the scenes to bring Robbie to Anfield, but that Robbie himself wanted to go and he submitted a transfer request to this effect.'

Levy revealed that Liverpool had said sorry for the 'inappropriate' way its official website reported comments by Rafael Benitez confirming his interest in Keane.

He added: 'In light of that acknowledgement they have apologised and agreed to make a donation to our club's main charity, the Tottenham Hotspur Foundation. Tottenham has therefore agreed not to pursue its official complaint to the Premier League.'

Keane has signed a four-year deal worth £80,000-a-week with the club he supported as a boy and could make his debut in Wednesday night's friendly against Villarreal after flying to Spain with the rest of Benitez's squad on Tuesday.

On Monday night, Keane attempted to defuse the row by thanking the Tottenham board, players and fans for his six years at White Hart Lane.

He said: 'I would specifically like to thank Daniel Levy for understanding that, as a fan, joining Liverpool is a lifelong dream of mine and one I couldn't let pass me by. I hope one day the Spurs fans, who have been brilliant to me, can understand this, too.'

In partnering the Irishman with Fernando Torres, Benitez has sent out a clear message that he finally intends to launch a serious assault on the League title - last won under Kenny Dalglish back in 1990 - having been criticised for placing too much emphasis on the Champions League.

The Spaniard must now find a way of financing an £18m bid for Aston Villa midfielder Gareth Barry and could even listen to offers for Dirk Kuyt.

Tottenham fans face more disappointment, with Dimitar Berbatov's transfer to Manchester United nearing completion. He cut a moody figure on the Spurs bench on Monday night, not getting changed despite being named as a substitute in the friendly against Norwich.

***

Maybe Levy wants an apology from United too to complete Berbatov signing?

£20.5million for a 28 year old striker with a 1-in-3 career strike rate seems pretty steep to me (ala 28 year old striker, twice world player of the year Ronaldinho for £16m) and therefore it will be interesting to see how much Liverpool and their fans will expect from him- would 17 goals in 50 games satisfy them and the needs of the side?

That is the real question.

For a team as skint as the Filthies this seams a strange buy, and it's going to be more like £23 million. They'll have to offload some more dross to do any more transfer business.

They'd should have offered Pompey $15m for Peter Crouch... he looks like a decent prospect.

With regards to the poor man's Keane... I always said I hope he shatters his ankle with one of his cartwheels one day he scores.... no more so than now though.

He's a good signing for them.

Could push them up to third with a bit of luck.

I dont condone it, but thats encouraging from our point of view. He is doing his very best to become a disruptive influence. Soon they will have no choice but to get rid of him.

Benitez has not got a clue. £10m would be pushing it for a limited player like Keane.

for a 20 goal a season man, who will be the perfect foil for Torres. when you sell crouch (a sub)for 11m. So, they improve their team for 8/9m - seems good to me.

Andy Johnson is going to join Fulham for 12m and he couldn't score in a whorehouse. 5m for Zamora, 5.5m for Kitson

I highly doubt he's gonna get an apology from Fergie. Unless of course it's followed by a post-signing rant about what a bunch of twats the Spurs board are.

Well if Arsenal were the same as last season i would have said NO.

Anyway after all the players that left and having seen that they havent even replaced those ones with similar talent and experience it can be the case.

Keane is not the man who will make Liverpool challenge for the title but at least will support Torres.

If we signed Robbie Keane for 20 million this board would be inundated with Scousers, Gooners and whatever else laughing at us and taking the piss. It would be even worse if our other three major signings of the summer were Dossena, Degen and Ngog.

Can with a straight face look at those signings and say Liverpool have improved?

We don't need Robbie Keane so if we spent 20m on him there would rightly be an outcry.

Robbie Keane I reckon might just improve a Liverpool team that finished 4th and got to the semi finals of the European cup. It can't be good news.

Regardless of whether we needed him or not there would still be an outcry.

Its a typical liverpool signing. Baros was supposed to be perfect for them. Jari Litmanen was gonna score bagloads. Morientas had them talking about handing out championship medals before the season began. Keane is a decent player but more limited than people think. when he shines he looks amazing but more often than not he does'nt shine. would'nt be worried about him in the slightest to be honest. he'll be lookin for another move in about 6 months anyway. and dear god that stupid goal celebration. watched him lots of times for ireland. he doesnt step up to the plate when needed.

The only two things I'm concerned about are:

1. That stupid celebration.

2. Scousers stealing all our Keano songs.

well hopefully they'll sing theres only one Keano regularly which is a lovely tribute to Roy

Baros,Jari, and Morientes never were proven in the league. Keane is.
Torres and Keane are streaky scorers. Hopefully they bang them in at different times, but you do have a point about the celebration. That has to end.

 @ levy
wonder what will happen when he realizes they wont get the 1.3m additional "compensation" .... ever

Admit I dont watch Tottenham much, but last season he looked out of depth only against Arsenal when they thumped them earlier in the season. But after Ramos took over I thought he had good matches against big teams. Along with Berbatov he appeared as only other good player in an average outfit.

Overall he is a decent goal scorer with good link up plays, not necessarily a tap up merchant. At United if given 40 odd starts he might get some 15-18 goals.

32 million for Robbie keane?

We should always overstate their prices when we talk about Liverpool signings, just like they do.

That is the real question.

Tottenham didn't want to sell. Tottenham sold him to their rivals for 4th spot.

Barcelona was desperate to sell. Barcelona sold him outside the country.

Big difference.

He's no Superman, but is a vast improvement for Liverpool. That said as Rafa likes to play a defensive set up the Gerrard Toress partenership will be broken up, and I m fine with Gerrard as a Cm, no doubt class but a player clearly more concerned with attacking, he is good defensively, but only when he is in position, and well tbf he is out of position quite often when playing CM

Taken from Liverpool's official site.

Here are 10 things you may not know about our new striker:

1. According to his page on Bebo.com Robbie loves listening to music and picks out Blink 182, Robbie Williams, Ronan Keating and Eminem as some of his favourite artists.

2. Earlier this year Robbie married former Miss Ireland contestant Claudine Palmer in Ballybrack, with Reds fan Chris de Burgh performing at the wedding.

3. Robbie began his career at South Dublin schoolboy side Crumlin United where he first rose to prominence in the club's junior sides. It wasn't long before his talent was recognised and he moved to Wolves in 1995 at the tender age of 15. Within two years he was in the club's first team and immediately hit the headlines when he fired home a debut double in a 2-0 win over Norwich City.

4. Former Spurs manager Martin Jol is a huge fan of Keane and once wrote: "Robbie always ensured there was a good atmosphere and spirit, whether it was organising games on the team bus or sitting down next to a guy who was by himself in the training ground canteen.

"Andy Reid was similar. I remember on a pre-season trip to France, Andy and Robbie leading everyone in a round of singing until 4am. I didn't want to stop them. I thought: "This is what a football team is all about."

5. Robbie was the Premier League's top scorer in the 2007 calendar year with an impressive tally of 19, and on December 26, 2007 he became only the 13th player in Premier League history to score 100 goals. It capped a remarkable year for the striker who notched up a total of 31 goals and 13 assists from just 40 starts.

6. Keane became the Republic of Ireland's all-time leading goalscorer in October 2004 when he grabbed a double in a 2-0 win over the Faroe Islands at Landsdowne Road to surpass Niall Quinn's total of 21. He now has 33 to his name.

7. Throughout Robbie's Spurs career he made a habit of a trademark goal celebration which saw him run to one the corner flags and perform a cartwheel and forward roll, before finishing by "firing" his hands like a gun.

It was something he continued until boss Martin Jol asked him to keep his celebrations more low key as he was worried his star striker may pick up an injury.

However, Keane did perform the move one last time to celebrate his 100th goal for the club in a 2-0 win against Sunderland on January 19, 2008. He became only the 15th Spurs player in history to reach that landmark.

8. When he's not leading the line on the football pitch Keane likes to relax with a good film and picks out Braveheart, The Shawshank Redemption, Shrek, Saw 2 and Liar Liar as some of his favourites.

9. Keane is already good friends with Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard and was on hand to celebrate the launch of Carra's city centre restaurant Cafe Sport England - despite hitting a double for Spurs just hours earlier in a 2-2 draw at Anfield in October, 2007.

10. Robbie was born on July 8, 1980 and shares his birthday with Wonder Years actor Fred Savage, American artist Beck and actor Kevin Bacon.

From The Sun:

LIVERPOOL had to make a grovelling apology to Tottenham before signing £20million hitman Robbie Keane on a four-year deal.
Angry Spurs chairman Daniel Levy insists the deal is not a transfer but an ‘enforced sale’ and says the fee is a huge compensation payment.

Spurs were angry Kop boss Rafa Benitez publicly declared his interest in 28-year-old Keane on Liverpool’s website.

The Merseysiders admit the move was inappropriate, issued an apology and made a donation to Tottenham’s official charity.

Levy said: “I was incredibly disappointed when I first heard, not only that Liverpool had been working behind the scenes to bring Robbie to Anfield, but that Robbie himself wanted to go and submitted a transfer request.

“I don’t regard it as a transfer deal — that is something between clubs when they both agree to trade.

“This is an enforced sale, for which we have agreed £19m as compensation plus a potential further £1.3m in additional compensation.”

Benitez has put his neck on the line with a £35m gamble on the Irishman, who signed after a medical.

With wages and bonuses, his fee will effectively double by the time his contract is up for renewal.

With no prospect of a serious sell-on fee for a man who will be 29 in February, Benitez is staking his reputation as well as Liverpool’s chances of glory on Keane.

It is a break from tradition by the Spaniard, whose move for Gareth Barry is on ice as he does not agree with Aston Villa’s £18m valuation.

All his previous mega-bucks signings have been young enough to mask the fee with either long service they will give, or potential cashpot they will command should they move on.

Keane's a much better player than Bellamy.

True, but like the little shite Robbie is coming out with the same old tired wank. From the BBC`s site:

I would specifically like to thank chairman Daniel Levy for understanding, that, as a fan, joining Liverpool is a lifelong dream of mine and one I couldn't let pass me by.

Pass the sick bag.

First, Keane; then £19 m tag which could rise to 21.5 m; and then 80k a week wages.

Proves that Rafa is really deluded.

Robbie Keane is a top class striker but in no way is he world class and in no way is he worth £20M!

I think the main point to be discussed here is why Rafa didn't go for a player with more prospects/ potential for improvement..

Also, from a Liverpool perspective it must be fecking annoying, as a team that continuously falls behind United in the league, to see United actively pursuing a better player than them.

In theory this should only widen the gap...

because when we do that everybody asks why we didn't sign a proven premier league goal scorer who will take no time to settle and who will walk into the first team.

We can't win but I would expect nothing less. While the transfer fee will always be used by rival fans as being "too high for a 28 year old" (as Liverpool fans will always say for Carrick adn hargreaves), the bottom line is this.

Will Robbie Keane improve Liverpool's 1st eleven? Undoubtedly Yes.

Will Robbie Keane add more goals to the Liverpool team? Undoubtedly Yes.

And you don't think he will break up the Gerrard-Torres partnership which was so effective in the second half of last season?

as you say streaky scorer. no consistency. and a crap attitude. the amount of times I have watched him for ireland and all arond me just wanted him taken off cos of his moany arsed attitude. he scores occasionally but not before driving fans to despair watching his flicks and selfish runs and shots that are not the hallmark of a real team player. the few times I have seen him score for ireland i have to turn to face away from wherever he is cos that roll and fall and two fingered nonsense is an embarressment. If we'd signed him I'd be gutted. then again we wouldnt sign him cos he's not good enough for utd.
