Renato Sanches | Loaned to Swansea

I had money on benfica to score another goal in a league match in one of his first games and he was absolutely bossing it. Like Anderson fit and on form. Then he rockets one in from 30 yards. Absolute bullet. I have liked him ever since. He has a lot of raw potential in the same way Alli did before he went to spurs.

A player I would have liked to have seen us sign before he went to Bayern and would still like to see us sign but we have bigger priorities to address first.

A defensive midfielder
A striker
A winger

Get all of these sorted first then hopefully we can add to the squad with someone like this.

To be honest our biggest issue was scoring goals, our defence was pretty solid last season. The assumption is that by getting a DM we will solidify our midfield and protect our defence and allow more freedom to our more attacking midfielders (Pogba, Mikhi etc)

But TBH there's no reason why we couldn't approach that problem with a different solution. Put Herrera as the DM and put Renato as a box to box next to Pogba. Renato would give us that extra ability going forward, he can dribble and create space and also make late runs into the box. Signing him, if he can play to his potential, would surely go a long way to solving our midfield issues. I don't think getting a DM is an absolute must and most importantly of all we must solve our goalscoring issues

I can see where you are coming from but in the bigger games I think asking Herrera to be the DM leaves us too exposed as he is more suited to playing the CM role. Having a true DM coupled with Herrera and then a forward thinking Pogba is a better mix overall and offers more stability. By all means if you are playing against a lesser team who you expect to dominate for 90 minutes then go for it but in the big games and in the champions league I think its a no brainer. IMO he would be fantastic for competition and squad depth but he isn't the priority right now.

But the big games weren't our issue last season? We actually did pretty well in the big games and you say Herrera as the DM doesn't offer as much stability but he was literally man of the match when we beat Chelsea...

I don't think our issue was big games, our season derailed purely because of dropping points against weaker teams and not scoring enough in those games. We can't run before we can walk, there's no point doing well against the big teams if we can't even beat the smaller teams and in my opinion signing a Sanches would help us a lot more than a DM like Fabinho.

That said I will admit in europe to do well we likely would benefit a lot from a DM. However this is Mourinho, he always has a plan and I'm sure he could come up with something, maybe even play 3 at the back or something.

While I agree, we need to strengthen other areas more urgently, I also think if available we should act on a deal for Sanches.

He is a serious talent, and this 1 season at Bayern wouldn't put me off in the slightest. The depth and quality of choosing between Pogba, Herrera and Sanches is unreal. If we also got a solid DM (Dier or Fabinho), with Carrick/Pereira/Fellaini also kicking around, the options would be fantastic in midfield for us.

Not a 100% must sign, but we have Lindelof done so the defence is sorted bar out-goings. If we can get a DM, striker and a winger wrapped up and Sanches is available, then I'd 100% do it

The phrase "damning with faint praise" comes to mind.

Don't know about that, from what I can tell Barkley has proved a lot more than Sanchez has - I'd rather have Barkley right now because so far Sanchez has proven nothing other than he was an vastly overrated kid who got a big move way sooner than he should have done. If you honestly would want Sanchez rather than Barkley then I'd love to know what you are basing your judgement on because it has nothing to do with what has happened on a football pitch so far.

I want neither.

Against Chelsea Herrara stalked Hazard all game, So I don't think he was the main 'dm' that game.
10 points out of 30 vs big teams.

W1 / l1 in Cup comps

Fabinho or any decent DM would allow Pogba to thrive. Just look at the effect Kante has had in the last two seasons & how good Pogba was vs England.

Need to get a settled team before Utd take more punts on 'potential' (He is 18)

You also need a balanced team, Pogba / Renato / Herrara is in my view fine is too unbalanced going forward for the big games / away games.

Again though, big away games are like what, 4/5 games in a season? We shouldn't be building our side with a priority on a system to deal with such a small number of games. If we can't win the other 33 games what's the point of winning those big 5 away games?

Kante obviously had a big effect but Chelsea would be nowhere without Hazard. Take Kante out and they'd still do well but take Hazard out and they're not even close to title challengers. Pogba was also fantastic against England because he had Mbappe and Demeble ahead of him... Until we get a superstar like Hazard or Mbappe we need to find a new system or shape that can improve us going forward. Getting a DM would help in a handful of big games but won't solve our scoring problems in all the other games.

Also our record in the big games is skewed by the fact that we basically threw the Arsenal and Spurs games at the end. We actually played very well in the first half of the season against Liverpool and Spurs and we would have won those games had we been more clinical.

Agree. We need to have a high level of competition in our squad. We should bag this guy if we can.

I'd be very open to buying Sanches - he clearly had issues settling at Bayern, but this doesn't mean that all the abilities and potential he had 1 year ago are gone.

He is still a very young player, and in my opinion we should definitely look at buying... especially for ~30Mil. We can develop him, let him find his feet and grow into being a very good player, no need to expect him to be a first team player immediately.

Find this post slightly odd. Did you not see Sanches at the Euro's? He has MASSIVE potential and bags of ability!

Barkley is inconsistent, in and out of the Everton team, with a split among Everton fans whether they want him to stay or not.

If you honestly think Barkley is a good signing, then I'd love to know what your basing this on as it can't be for footballing reasons

Has he? I have yet to see it. He is physically big, strong and quick sure but other than that I've seen absolutely nothing to suggest he has massive potential or that he has bags of ability. Not saying he won't become a great player because I've no idea if he could but to suggest that one or two decent cameo's in the Euro's mean that he is something special is pure folly.

By the way I only mentioned Barkley because of other posts that people had made - you could compare Sanchez to many players and my opinion would be exactly the same - the kid has so far proved absolutely nothing and to big him up as if he is some sort of special talent is based on very little evidence.

So Bayern signed him for big money for no reason at all? They just plucked him from nowhere and signed him because he has no talent?

Don't be so ridiculous, he's obviously talented.

Sanches had a season at Benfica, and was a part of the Portugal Euro team starting games (not every game I'm aware). It was his performances during this time and his potential which led Bayern to make a move.

By your reasoning, Mbappe cannot be talented cos he is so young and only played half a season?

My reasoning is perfectly sound - Bayern bought him because they thought he had the talent required, so far the evidence shows that they made a massive mistake and vastly overpayed.

Re: Mbappe - I've said several times in other threads that the type of fee's being touted for a kid who has had half a season of good performances in his career is absolutely insane and if he does go for a world record fee then the club who signs him is completely bonkers. Sure he looks good but he could just as quickly be a flash in the pan and end up a decent but not 'world class' player.

What an odd post. Barkley is more AM or plays free (wide role) whereas Sanches is very much a CM.

On top of that, I have never seen Barkely playing as well as Sanches in the Euros. Harsh to say he is overrated, he is just a kid who moved to massive club. It takes time to settle and adapt.

I'm not comparing Barkley to Sanchez at all - somebody else mentioned Barkley and I just followed up on the point. You could compare him to tons of players and I'd feel the same way, he has proved nothing so far and at this moment there is very little to suggest he is going to become a good player. Not saying he won't become a world beater, because I don't know - just judging him on what I have seen so far.

This works both ways. Bayern are willing to let him go after one season for a reason.

Regardless of him being man of the match against Chelsea he is more suited to playing the cm role of chasing players down and getting involved in the attack. Adding a defensive mid would allow Herrera and Pogba more freedom to do the things they excel at. Sure having Sanchez would give us more attacking prowess and I would like to see a signing of that ilk but it still isn't the priority for the team. First and foremost we needed a centre half, a forward and a defensive minded midfielder to replace Carrick given he isn t getting any younger. We need to get those areas sorted then we can move onto filling the squad with more quality and competition for places.

Bit harsh, he has only played half a dozen times for Bayern and is competing for a place with some of the worlds best players and what is he 18/19? How does that prove he WAS a vastly over rated kid? (isnt he younger than Rashford for example who is still a kid) In comparison Ross Barkley was hyped up to be a better prospect than Wayne Rooney and at the age of 23 still hasnt really proven himself and is still making schoolboy errors in wrong areas of the pitch at times. If anything surely Barkley so far has proven he was a vastly over rated kid rather than SAnches?

So the guy is not chosen for Portuguese national team. Instead it's under 21 now. Not that I am judging but don't you think that's a bit of a demotion for a guy who last year was dubbed the best thing in the world

Not even starting for the U21s

The fact the player is not adapting to some club/league doesn't mean he is not a potential top player.
I saw some Bayern fans trashing him in their forum...frankly, their opinion in this case its irrelevant.

We will probably need to wait until 2018 to see the Germans stop being arrogant on football again.
By now apparently the conventional approuch is to pretend they know what they're talking about, despite the FACT that all generations of German football never produced ONE best-of-a-generation player.

Yes, they have great tactics, strong mentality and can win in this sport.
But we should AT LEAST stop pretending that Germans can figure out/judge who can be a top player and who can't, since they NEVER had ONE top-top player.

I see people keep talking about Renato Sanches's bags of abilities and potential. Curiously, can someone elaborate on them? I mean, what are the things he is currently good at and which of his abilities can they see being developed to World Class level?

From what I have seen of him so far, he is an average passer, below average technique and vision, lack of understanding of the game, average defensive game, don't know about his finishing. He is very good at driving forward with the ball, good work-rate, kind of pacy, difficult to push off the ball due to his core strength. If he can develop these abilities to top level, we would be looking at a Moussa Sissoko type of a player. Will that be good enough for our club?

Yeah, but then he's doing things like this.
Good one but If he is B2B then i need to see his runs. The ones which made people crazy for him and cafe went into meltdown when he signed for Bayern. Although i still do think that Mou can get the best out of him if he is coached right, and not too much is put into his head telling him that how great he is

Good potential and Bayern decided to take the gamble as other clubs including us were equally keen. I think he's made for the prem and would be great addition to our team.

It's not uncommon for talented players to flop and catch form somewhere else. Anyone remember Kluivert and Davids at AC Milan.

9 penalties and he isn't a DM.

For me if it's a choice then I'll go for Renato to have as back up whilst he develops. Fabinho I really really don't see why people are willing to trade in their granny for him. He's a good ball winner but he isn't a Dm. People keep saying look at the effect Kante had. Kante has a Dm along side him in Matic that's why it works and drink water was similar the season before. Pogba is not going to sit there.
