Hmm, just yesterday I heard someone on the radio describe Apocalypse Now as the second best war film of all time, just behind Come and See. Think I'll check Come and See out seeing as it's so highly rated.

Can't disagree, and I actually thought his last two were the most flawed of all. Days of Heaven isn't my favourite though I should really re-watch it along with Badlands to make my mind up. Thin Red Line and Lost World are my favourite.

Actually, I have a long weekend beginning on Wednesday evening, so maybe I can try to watch a few Thursday and Friday before doing the list. It's still going to be torture, dunno how you managed to thin it down to 20 films, I kept reading lists and thinking 'ah yeah I'll have to include that, I would've forgotten it!'
I think he actually shot a few masterpieces, but they got lost somewhere in the editing room.

It was torture, I tell ya!

Steven Spielberg apparently screened it before making both Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan, yet those films still appear fluffy compared to it.

Ffs called Malick's film "Lost World", I meant New World of course.

Pull yourself together RiP!

Top three for me.
I would have included 2046 too if I had more space.

The lesson here is that Wong Kar-Wai is a god, or well, he used to be.

Duffy's gonna have your head for that template.

I really should watch Raise the Red Lantern again now that there's a blu ray version available, loved it when I saw it despite the quality being terrible and it being such a visual film and all.

I probably should have included Seven Samurai seeing as it's picking up quite a few points.

It was in my first draft but I've thought of a bunch of stuff I like better since then. 20 just isn't enough for me.

What we thinking ladies and gents, is Friday a sufficient deadline or extend it for a few days?

Talking from a selfish point of view here, but a few more days would be great. I've been swamped at work and elsewhere and haven't had the opportunity to watch a few films I really should before doing the list, so having the whole weekend at the very least would be great. Nilsson, be my advisor here, what absolute classics should I see before compiling it? I'm thinking:
- Aguirre
- Stalker
- re watching Badlands and Days of heaven
- Vertigo
- Come & see

?

Also, has there been much love for Citizen Kane in here? Has Nosferatu been mentioned?

You forgot to put The Godfather on the list.

I left it out on purpose, It's a great film n'all but I don't really rate it as highly as most people seem to and everyone was gonna have it in their list so it got cut from the list. I'm surprised you also didn't notice the Godfather 2 wasn't even in my runners up list, though that's a whole different story with that one :nervous:

I re-watched a number of Kurosawa films recently and Seven Samurai was the one that really blew me away, I felt that it towered over everything else I was seeing. I had always liked it but it's just such a predictable, ever present feature of top film lists that I always wanted to push back a little. Yojimbo and High and Low were my usual go to Kurosawa's when talking of favourites but these days I go wth Seven Samurai. It's at the Citizen Kane level of film making genius and should be higher up my list but for the whims of personal preference.

Similar with The Godfather. Only in the last few years have I acknowledged what a remarkable film it really is. To the extent that, as a result of back to back viewings, the 2nd part has started to suffer quite badly in my estimation. I think I'm about ready to amputate part 2 in my mind, in the same way that everyone has done with part 3. The problems of following perfection.
