RedCafe's Top 50 Albums

Did expect this sort of reaction from these old farts. I feel I shouldn't have been so honest. But then, this was merely a list of my 50 favorite albums not the 50 most important albums in the history of music.
I only have one musical education, so what do I know.

Fair point . . . but look on the bright side . . . one day you to will be an old fart. ;)

2. Manic Street Preachers - This Is My Truth Tell My Yours (1998)

9. Metallica - Metallica (1991)

17. Kiss - Smashes Thrashes & Hits (1988)

43. Suede - Coming Up (1996)

I wouldn`t criticise anyone for including bands i dislike on their list, and MSP, Metallica, Kiss and Suede all had albums worthy of a place in anyone`s top 50 - it`s just that the albums you chose were nowhere near their best efforts. If the Kiss compo is the only album you have i would suggest Alive II and Dressed to Kill as their best offerings. Dog Man Star pisses all over Coming Up, and i found all MSP`s efforts after Richie left to be patchy at best. Props for Vitalogy however, very underrated album - Pearl Jam`s best imo.

I think I'm the only one so far who has included a female artist in their list...two in fact...Kate Bush and the awesome Aretha Franklin.

Cheers Nearco,

I am sure you are right about all your points, so I owe explanations ;)

Metallicas black album is the only one of theirs I like. Sure they have some great songs on their other albums. The Black Album did however have an impact on my life. It was one of those I sat listening to hours on end with my headphones in my parents basement. Hours and hours of rewinding. Just as I did with "Smashes, Thrashes & Hits", and its at least 10 years since music had such an impact on me as back then.
Suede's "Coming Up" was during a special time in my life. I had just quit school a year and a half early, and had my first job in a fish factory. We had one hour long break every day, and I used to run home to listen to that album. Its all very nostalgic :)

I don't have any excuse for MSP... it was my first acquaintance with MSP and I listened to it a huge lot.

No reaction to my two Nik Kershaw additions? Has anyone of you heard those two?

Holy feck  you put him in your list too? Didn't notice that one.

Thank god your list isn't being used.

Okay I'll give you Lauren Hill, mainly because she is er...a female artist :o

On the basis of having female vocalsits I suppose I could then include Massive Attack's Blue Lines...not quite the same thing, though :D

Why did I ever start this?:wenger:

Now that is being picky, if Portishead were called Beth Gibbons, or the Cocteau Twins went under the name of Liz Fraser would you then class them as artists? (by the way both these have done solo albums) :D

Well obviously yes...but they ain't!:D

But you ahve to agree that the vast majority of lists are heavily male-dominated...just like the music industry, I suppose. That would probably explain a lot.

I think if this were a list of my top 50 songs, then probably more female artists would be represented.

We're arguing over a name then, that's all.

Anyway, it is a male dominated world, and on the whole the best bands do tend to have male singers (although again it's all personal taste) a bit like the world of comedy stand up too.

Not sure about the individual songs bit, maybe I'd have one or two more in there but I can't think of many that would get in above male bands/singers.

Ok, what should I listen to now?

Inspire me.

The Smiths - The queen is dead

you know it makes sense

Not a Smiths fan, not saying they are crap, it's just that his voice grates on me to the point I want tear off my own ears. Shame really, the songs are great.

Nomes, couldn't get the Banco De Gaia album you were on about so I'm d/loading one called 'You Are Here' instead

RedNome if you like late 70s early 80s post-punk/new-wave stuff, you should check out the album Real Life by Magazine.

I'll check it out Gaz, although it's not a favorite genre of mine.

Never listened to em mate, give us a title and I'll get downloading.

The only great At the Drive-In album is 'Relationship of Command'. 'In/Casino/Out' has its moments, but the vocals are pretty poor at times on it. Relationship of Command rules tho - and if you like that, check out the Mars Volta. Completely different, but has it's the singer and guitarist from ATD-I. They took a lot of acid in between the two bands, and ended up with a prog-punk-salsa thing going on. Can't really describe it, but it's great
