How should we proceed with the midfielders thread?

The last question - do we keep 20 names for nominations or do we extend it to 30 for midfielders and forwards? I feel like there are more standout names.

Why not 30. People can still name fewer players if they want.

Why isn't Falcao in b2b

I deleted the obvious ones, even though not all of them. All DM/B2B.

Think that might create a problem - either we should delete all the obvious ones or list all the eligible players to comprise 90% of everybody's top 30s. Possible doubtful ones from recollection:

In - Gerrard
Out - Modric, Deco

Coluna, Falcão — playmakers or B2B? Thoughts?

Falcao posts already on the thread:

Right, it looks like DMs and B2B; playmakers and 10s is the winner.

So I think sorting the edge cases needs to be done between B2B and playmakers.

Ones I think could be an issue are -

Falcao
Schweinsteiger
Younger Scholes

Anybody got others?

I think Modric was brought up too
Think the only issue is where you place complete midfielders, the likes of Falcao, Seedorf, De Bruyne, Overath etc.

Schweinsteiger's both version fit in DM/B2B category
Young Scholes is a b2b
Modric with complete midfielders wherever they go.
I'd probably split the complete central midfielders based on prioritisation between on and off the ball. So basically what was their biggest strength. On that basis would put Modric and Falcao into the #8s.
Midfield Playmakers:

Paulo Roberto Falcão* - I think that's fair given his overall style and technique.

Yeah. Same goes for Coluna in my book, he was huge but I don't rate his defensive game highly; it's his dribbling, shooting and passing that stand out.

For me Coluna falls in the Neeskens category. The attacking B2B's. Obviously great going forward but more than decent on the defensive side.

Now Masopust not in the B2B category I can understand. He was way more of a playmaker. Not Coluna. Has to be a B2B for me.

Anyone else agrees? Although comparing him to Neeskens in terms of his defensive workrate is simply blasphemy :)

It's not a comparison. Ballack falls in the Neeskens category too. Attacking B2Bs. Doesn't mean it's a comparison. Come out of the draft mode will you

@GodShaveTheQueen @2mufc0 this is the discussion thread. I've put both to playmaking category, but if the public opinion demands, we can put both to B2B.
For me Falcao was more than just a playmaker, he was defensively good enough to be classified as a B2B. Though he was complete that he could go in both categories.

Yeah, of course, no one questions his defensive capabilities as he was one of the most all-rounded midfielders ever, but we jointly decided to put him in the playmaking category. There's never going to be a full consensus on all of the players.

If I could I would put him no. 2 b2b

Looking at the lists already submitted - ooft this is a stacked category.

its insane how many great players you have to leave out....saying that, saved one no matter what!

What’s the logic in Redondo being eligible but Falcao not - think they’re quite similar in terms of being a playmaker.

Redondo wouldn't look out of place as a DM in any formation. Falcao would.

You would have a point if it was a DM list but it’s not - it’s a DM and B2B midfielder list. Falcao wouldn’t “look out of place” as a B2B midfielder.

They’re both comparable as playmakers.

I don't have a good argument against Falcao in the B2B list. I don't mind having him there at all, but Redondo is more well rounded for unquestionable presence while Falcao is understandably still under discussion.

While they are similar as playmakers (Falcao better), Redondo is miles better off the ball IMO.

A positional question about Nedved. If we go traditional wingers and wide forwards he doesn't fit in either. I would be tempted to put him as a midfield playmaker. He's really an LCM which is hard to properly categorise.

That was tough. On another day some would be switched around but pretty happy with my list.

They’re not comparable as playmakers, come on! Redondo is great, but he’s not that great.

I originally put Redondo as a playmaker though.

They definitely are similar in the sense that playmaking is a fundamental but only partial aspect to their game - don’t see a big difference at all. Agree Falcao is more technical but it’s not a chasm and Redondo would be better on the ball than some playmakers who are in that group by virtue of being specialists.

I think they should both be in the same group. They’re both complete players who undertook the role of playmaker within the team (but weren’t defined by that in a way specialists are).

Need to solve the Beckenbauer issue quickly. Sjor is the first one to list him as DM/B2B, but no one else has, so they probably have him as CM playmaker.

(CM playmaker for me, but I can understand the reasoning behind DM/B2B.)
