Film RedCafe's Favourite Movies Of All Time Contest (THE RESULTS)

This one really deserves to be a top 5 movie. Its pretty much perfect. The direction and the performances of all the cast, and it has probably the most iconic score in movie history.
Yep. Two notes and literally anyone that watches movies will know what it is.

Not many films have documentaries made about them - the amount of symbolism that has been unpacked is astonishing for what is on paper a simple story of a man losing it.

What else can you say about Kubrick that hasn't already been said?

A truly iconic horror film unlike any another. Masterpiece is an understatement.

And the incredible thing is that I wouldn’t even consider it for my top 3 movies of his. That’s how incredible his work is. Just masterpieces throughout. Greatest director the world has ever seen.

And the most-iconic line.

I watched Gladiator again this afternoon 'cos of these results, and have Jaws on now. Gladiator looks amazing (it's really beautiful to look at), but Jaws does that (with the remaster) and is just an absolutely great, timeless movie. My dad doesn't really do watching films, but Spielberg (I think.., it was someone Jaws related anyway) was on Desert Island Discs over xmas and he watched it again for the first time in probably 30 years because of that interview, and loved it.

I don't mind him in movies like Instant Family. He's suited to those comedy roles.

I thought he was alright in Deepwater and Lone Survivor as well, and others too. But I think that's cos I have the juxta in my head of my sister loving him when I was 13 or something. And the remake of The Gambler, the first scene in the casino is tense as feck: if you like a flutter and don't know the outcome. And that had Brie Larson in it so...

I’m guessing that Fellowship will follow before too long. Shame the trilogy divided votes amongst itself so that one film couldn’t rule them all.

There's at least one great 'making of' documentary floating about (no pun intended) about Jaws too. Pre-CGI directors really did have to struggle to get their vision on film

You could vote for both, it didn't split its votes. Its so much higher than that film deserves. 3rd one in particular was a pretty shit movie

Surprised that ROTK is ranked lower than Two Towers.

Hoping that at least The Fellowship of the Ring makes it to the top 10.

You can’t give them equal points so it did split votes if you were inclined to include at least one, and the natural inclination will be to include other selections. Though you do have a partial point about the 3rd being too high of an inclusion on this list.

I agree with a lot of that, but you could argue that going back to kill Waingro is the one time McCauley loses control and acts on emotion.

He does go to kill Van Zant I guess as a counter to that, but after the big heist they've obviously got every cop in town looking for them.

I need to watch LA Takedown again cos it's been over a decade so my memory of it is likely rusty. Your ambiguous ending suggestion sounds good.

Have you seen Thief?

Two Towers didn't even make the final

To be fair, most people that voted one generally voted the other close by (like 1&2). Merging them would have made a difference but probably not as much as you think.

The only thing i'd find harder to understand than voting for Return of the King would be voting for Return of the King ahead of Fellowship of the Ring

I voted for ROTK over FOTR - thanks for the tag @Dirty Schwein

for me ROTK is my favourite film of all time by a clear margin. Yea fellowship is amazing (my second favourite) but nothing can beat the battle of pelenor fields. The sound of the horns and seeing the Rohirrim charge... just imagine if you were a knight of Gondor - still in Minas Tirith - getting run over by the orcs. All hope is lost and you then hear those horns. Help, human help, is here. That’s why it’s my favourite film of all time - it’s so close to the book for me.

and the beacons scene - in the cinema that was my favourite scene - just incredible

What are the films flaws?

I really like the film and its required viewing leading up to Christmas for my family for some reason, but I remember someone mentioning the fact that the movie is called Inglorious Basterds but that, ultimately, the movie's finale, ie, the death of the Nazi leadership, would not have changed had the Basterds' not been involved. Shoshanna would have been successful regardless of the actions of the Basterds. In fact, their involvement made Shoshanna's plan less successful as, without the Basterds, Landa would never have figured out the plot (from evidence gathered in the bar) and would have died as well in the fire.

I mean i think theres good scenes in the mix, particularly around Minas Tirith. Its the 3 hours of other deeply mediocre stuff that drags it down to a weak movie that bores me to tears. And I'm a lord of the rings fan, god help the poor saps who sit through this who aren't into it.

Keep going….I’m almost there

Only four of us would pass The Voight-Kampff test.
I hated Blade Runner as a kid because I was expecting Terminator when I watched it based off the title and poster. Appreciated it much more when I watched it as an adult.
