Film RedCafe's Favourite Movies Of All Time Contest (THE RESULTS)

A worthy winner.

Hard to see beyond the populist's choice of Breaking Bad for the next tournament.

Impressive that Coppola has 3 films in the top 10 and Scott 3 in the top 20.

Thanks for taking the time to do this @Dirty Schwein

Thank you all for the kind words. It's nice after all the bickering during the actual contest

Although the moaning on the gaming version last year was different level, those guys cared waaaaay too much!

Well Alien finished second, otherwise you would've seen moaning on a similar scale

Great job @Dirty Schwein for a very fun weekly event.

My request for the television one is that if you do a free for all in the first round, please allow a Top 10 or Top 15 for that round (even if you eventually only plan to allow 5 shows to progress from the first round. Too hard to do a Top 5 when so many great shows from around the world. As I love shows more than films, I will happily help you tally up the votes for that round if you consider it too time-consuming. It would be really interesting to see people's Top 10 lists right off the bat before more intricate genre or decades voting.

A worthy winner.

The Wire will have something to say there on previous forum history. Plus a few others.

Yeah, I think the betting favorites going in would be The Wire, Breaking Bad, and The Sopranos.

Hopefully, enough people have watched non-English shows to make it interesting in the top 10 and top 20 (over half of my top 10 are non-English shows).

Cheers @Dirty Schwein

Glad to see The Matrix made it to no. 6, despite what the haters say! There are few better experiences in film than seeing The Matrix for the first time.

Still can't believe that Fight Club didn't even make the top 30 though!

Hard to see beyond the populist's choice of Breaking Bad for the next tournament.

I hope not. It's so overrated.

I stopped contributing after a few rounds. Where is Psycho

So this is how it felt to vote Leave.

I didn't know that, but either way, films also need to be be able to stand alone, regardless of historical facts or books or whatever else they may be based on - and I think you can look at them that way as well. So I don't think that invalidates my point that both the Goodfellas and The Godfather stories could be told outside the mob context, but that both stories work better within it.

But again, none of that matters while you're watching pt 1. I've never read those books, loved pt 1, and I have never seen anyone claim that pt 1 isn't a good standalone film.

Godfather I agree, although many of the story's key elements require characters to be able to easily resort to murder, threats or other illegal acts; Michael killing Sollozzo and McCluskey for example, for the sake of character and story development. Outside of the mafia setting it may be more difficult to integrate that successfully and it wouldn't be as interesting. I think the interest in and mystery of the mafia drove the decision to create the novel as a mafia-centric historical epic in the first place but it certainly draws in elements from non-mafia stories like King Lear that could facilitate it being told in another setting.

Goodfellas is a no, though. The film is derived from Hill's memoirs of life in the mob and because of this, for me, it would be difficult to extract the essence of Hill's genuinely true recollections and shift that to a different setting successfully.

For one, it's essentially a heist story as the main thrust of the plot centres around the Lufthansa robbery. Because of this, the story itself is already limited to one based around illegal acts. Furthermore, characters like Jimmy and Tommy would not work as well as they did without the option of frequent recourse to violence, which only a few settings (mob story, cop drama, military adventure) could realistically support. And when it comes to those options viewers generally don't like to see cops and soldiers portrayed as bad guys. For some reason, though, we're able to develop an affinity with mobsters in film despite all the terrible things they do. Goodfellas as a film cannot stand on its own, it requires the viewer to understand that Henry Hill was a mobster and the film is the story of that part of his life.

1. The Godfather

9. Apocalypse Now
10. Terminator 2: Judgement Day
11. Blade Runner
12. Goodfellas
13. LOTR: Return Of The King
14. Indiana Jones: Raiders Of The Lost Ark
15. The Shining
16. Jaws
17. Good Will Hunting
18. 12 Angry Men
19. Gladiator
20. Die Hard
21. Se7en
22. The Silence Of The Lambs
23. Old Boy
24. Inglorious Basterds
25. Jurassic Park
26. The Good, The Bad & The Ugly
27. The Dark Knight

The misfits:
  • The Matrix
  • T2
  • Die Hard
  • Inglorious Basterds
  • Heat
  • Interstellar
  • Batman Begins
I loved every one of these, but they seriously do not belong in a top movie list.

Not one is better than these random classics:
  • Big Lebowski
  • Forrest Gump
  • Spirited Away
  • Fargo
  • Taxi Driver
  • Schindler's List
  • Saving Private Ryan

I've been thinking about the TV show contest and to me, there's no way it will work with the way I've done this one and the gaming one.

I have thought of a new format especially for it and without giving away too much... It does indeed begin with a free for all top 10 vote.
I agree. Let's hope for a classic @Dirty Schwein fix to ensure it isn't so.
Never fixed nothin' :nervous:
Are there any TV shows featuring Nic Cage, Alex Kidd or Hollow Knight?
Haha no but I am a big fan of Prison Break & Spartacus
No Predator, no party.

Thanks for your efforts @Dirty Schwein
Yep. These guys clearly feel too inferior when they see "the handshake" ... Bunch of pencil pushers.

@Dirty Schwein A friend of mine worked on both Con Air and The Rock. They had a private screening of The Rock to show Cage, and my friend was sure Cage was going to love it. Turns out, Cage hated it, hated how it made his character look like “a total pussy”, and in general it was a very bad afternoon. Jobs were threatened, harsh words were spoken, and everyone thought maybe they had a disaster on their hands. Soul searching, hand wringing.

Same friend worked on Con Air, and when it came time for the private screening for Cage, my friend assumed Cage would hate it because it’s an objectively terrible movie, so this time he had his assistant show the movie. Cage loved it. LOVED IT. Cage always wanted to be the cool tough guy badass. He was overjoyed, had a real bonding session with the assistant. Probably took everyone to Musso & Frank afterwards.

And this is why I love him more than my wife and kids combined

Also... I'm jealous of your friend.

WOW lucky friend

I think Alien is just way too high. A really good movie, but usually you do not see this high in the lists.

The Godfather winning it is expected. Widely considered the greatest movie ever, and hard to argue against that.

Thanks for all the effort @Dirty Schwein

Looking forward to spending months on categories, arguing and then ultimately picking between The Wire and The Sopranos in the TV one.
I think it was Breaking Bad who won this the last time around (with The Wire being runners up and no idea where Sopranos ended).

Of all the films on the list you picked out Alien? To be fair, it's a list of favourite films.

I think this is the key bit. You can easily imagine Alien or Matrix or Terminator etc being people's favourite films. Especially for a certain age group...

I made the mistake of calling the gaming version of this "best"... Metal Gear Solid came second. You can objectively say that's not the second best game of all time but can easily see it being high up as a favourite...

Alien and Terminator are great films, to be fair. Perhaps we could do a list of top ten guilty pleasures. No doubt Rocky 4 would win.

It already has in my mind. If only Rocky was around right now in real life, he would stop the Russia/Ukraine war using his fists.

Thanks for another great contest @Dirty Schwein, I enjoyed it. Just like with the games list, we've ended up with a worthy winner. I'm especially pleased to see Alien as runner-up, it's good to see that it gets the recognition it deserves on here. It seems like the caf loves sci-fi in general, which I fully support.
