Meh, why bother? Top 20 is sure to be a combination of the usual suspects(not the movie) and Nolan(ugh), with little to no animation or movies in a different language than English. Yawn.
Not sure what your point is to be honest, if you dont want to do it why comment, but if you have some input give it.
All the way thought this thread, there has been films recommended and watched and liked , why dont you do the same .

Exactly.

Also Paul your location may be inaccurate now, 'crappy' films might be 'classic.'

I still have plenty of crappy films to watch, but I am getting a better taste for films.
That's the good thing about crappy films, plenty being made every day. You can't run out of crappy ones.

Don't bother then.
So basically ..."waaaah this is dumb because people won't vote how I want them to."
I should invent an app that blocks Reddit and RedCafe whenever I've had more than 5 beers:annoyed:

People are obviously entitled to their own opinion. I'm not gonna agree with the list, but in all honesty it's just laziness from my side that keeps me from posting my own list. I also have a hard time putting one favorite movie ahead of another, as they often offer very different experiences.

We've all posted drunk, you are forgiven.
But post your list and remember there are easily one hundred films produced in Hollywood that are worthy of the greatest 100.

Good comeback, most have posted drunk at some stage, but post your list does not have to be in any order.

I genuinely think that if Perfect Blue hadn't been an anime movie it would have been hailed as one of the greatest thrillers of modern times.

Aronofsky lifted a lot of things from it and got the plaudits with the way inferior Black Swan.

Yeah, I agree.

But at the same time, I'm glad that it's animated. Some movies work better through animation. Granted, Perfect Blue is one of the few animated movies on my list that could be live action without a big drop in quality.

True. Kon used the medium of animation in such creative and seamless ways to tell a story that even though a few of his film probably could have worked in live action form, it just wouldn't have been the same or as good.

Kon was a true visnionary. He died way too young. Easily my favorite director.

A big loss indeed, most of the anime film's I've seen since he passed have exclusively been cheap Ghibli knockoffs.
Yeah, the quality has dropped in recent years.

I recommend Wolf Children and The Beast and The Boy if you haven't seen them. Not quite Kon level, but still very good.

A retired pop idol (Mima) wants to make a transition into acting; but an enigmatic, obsessed stalker/fangirl unleashes psychological terror upon her - which leads to a deterioration of Mami's mental state. The atmosphere, the transitions from Mima's conscious and imaginary dream/nightmare phases; and the unsettling, disjointed tone it sets from the beginning really propels it no another level as far as anime movies go - it's really a gritty thriller/paranoia masterpieace, as suggested above. If you've seen Paprika (uncited inspiration for Inception) and Millenium Actress (same director and theme as Perfect Blue, but not as dark), then you must watch Perfect Blue.

As far as the inspiration for Black Swan goes, apart from a similar template in terms of the storyline, there are a lot of visual similarities between the two movies:

^ What he said, a mind-bending take on Japanese culture, celebrity obsession, slut-shaming and so forth.

Think Lynch/De Palma/Polanski but animation.

Cheers boyos, only seen four of those in total, so many to get through. You not a Whisper of the Heart fan Invictus? Among my favourite Ghiblis! Only Yesterday is excellent too.

Saw La La Land at the weekend, which I absolutely loved. Think it'll probably make my list.

I've been rubbish in catching up on the classics to fill my gaps of knowledge though, I feel like I'd need years to make a list I'm somewhat happy with.

Also, Nillson really needs to make a template. It'll make his life fifty times easier.

Couple of slight edits after putting Snatch in twice, dropped lock stock a few places and included Top Gun.

Almost there, could probably take my top 30 and spin them around almost in any order depending on my mood. And certainly probably will leave out dozens of movies that I will go . DOH! when I realize it.

I'm feeling that I probably should have at least one Polanski film in there, the front-runner at the moment is Tess which, for some reason, I have a strange fondness for. It's also the one that is freshest in mind.

Chinatown or The Pianist, surely.
