Not enough love for world cinema I'd say in this list, where is Yojimbo, or Akira? Or Papillon, Ghost in the Shell etc., - is Anime allowed?

Also, where is the love for the Cohens, or Polanski...dare I say, some early brooks work too?

And for a hat-trick of posts, just watched Casablanca, it's alright but really - number 8? Seems to be up there because of 3 rather famous quotes, here's looking at you kid.

:eek::eek::eek:

How have you not seen these films

I'm gonna watch Blade Runner tonight on TV.

Lucas/Spielberg adventures are not really my cup of tea. Too childish.

Heard great things about Amelie and Trainspotting, just haven't gotten around to seeing them yet. Ichi the Killer I'm downloading now.

In general I like darker/grimmer/depressing stuff.

Bah, Empire Strikes Back is the best Star Wars film by a long way. Much darker and more sinister.

As for Raiders of the Lost Ark... no excuses :nono:

Amelie is a surprisingly good movie btw. I was expecting it to be a crappy girl flick, but I really enjoyed it. Certainly worthy of it being in the top 100.

What about Raiders of the Lost Ark? It's almost the perfect action/adventure movie.

Can I just ask how French Connection and French Connection II didn't make the list?

Surely better than a number of films on that list?

Fine, downloading Raiders of the Lost Ark now. I know I've seen one of the old Indiana Jones movies, but can't remember which.

If you saw the one with the underground train chase then yeah, that was a very childish film. I hated that one "Temple of Doom". With the annoying shrieking blond.

It's not a bad list but it's hugely biased in terms of modern films.

Nothing from Preston Sturges for example?

I was surprised to see so little Tarkovsky (well, maybe just surprised not to see Andrei Rublev) and Bergman.

It's not a bad list but it's hugely biased in terms of modern films.

Nothing from Preston Sturges for example?

Which really shouldn't surprise anyone

a) Most people here grew up in either the 80's, 90's or 00's.
b) Much more movies are being made now.
c) Movies have changed a lot.
d) Modern films are much more available

There are some old films that I think are fantastic, but on the whole I prefer films from the last 3 decades.

Much more movies are being made.....but there are also less truly great films being with every passing year. Unless of course you expand your horizons to the foreign and indie markets which very few do, just like the refuse to expand to black and such.

Spoony doesn't rate Stalker, and he hasn't seen Wild Strawberries. I can already say now that a few Tarkovsky films will appear very high on my list.

I love Zerkalo, and Solyaris is one my favourite films. I'll have to rewatch Stalker...and I'll probably watch his other films and all.

I was surprised to see so little Tarkovsky (well, maybe just surprised not to see Andrei Rublev) and Bergman.

I think that's because not everyone had seen movies by Tarkovsky and Bergman, this time I'm hope everyone will have see movies by those two. It's the only fair way to put up a list such as this.

And Zen have you seen most of our top 100?

Er...that's RC Top 100. You've got a shedload of films to see.

Where are all the Woody Allen movies?

1.Manhattan
2.Hannah and her sisters
3.Annie Hall
4.Play it again Sam
5.Husbands and wives

All utter classics that must be watched (ideally numerous times).

Also has anybody mentioned Jean de Florette? I'm not really a European cinema buff but that's undoubtedly my favourite film.

Can everyone who's received a PM regarding this please reply via PM? It's easier for me to keep track of who's in and who's not.

And for a hat-trick of posts, just watched Casablanca, it's alright but really - number 8? Seems to be up there because of 3 rather famous quotes, here's looking at you kid.

Was looking for the white text ... considering it's widely considered to be one of the most perfect screenplays written (although a great screenplay doesn't necessarily mean a great film - but this one does).

PS is it too late to put my name down?!

On that 100 list, I've seen all but Das Boot, Hiroshima mon amour, and The Exorcist(kinda absurd why I still haven't really, owned it on DVD for like 8 years -_-)

Do you want to you have go at this, you crazy Yankie bloke you?

And you ought to watch those three movies, they're great.

That may be so, but for a narrative driven film others like Streetcar and Cat on a hot tin roof are superior even though they aren't technically 'screenplays.' Casablanca is good, don't get me wrong, but it's a couple of really famous quotes and scenes which have been copied that make it so great.

It's pretty iconic, to be fair, Adzz.

I agree it is, but that's sort of the problem I'm getting at. It may have done lots of things first (the impressive scene with the Plane flying towards Bogart sat outside) I just found myself veering into boredom after an hour of sitting in a bar talking, perhaps that's my 21st century attention span creeping in.

No idea, I had a few Cohen Bro movies in my top 100, and Rosemary's Baby was in my top ten.

Fargo, Oh Brother Where Art Thou and I reckon No Country for Old Men should make the list this time around. Big Lebowski should be a given.

I don't disagree with you part of the reason I liked it was because it was so iconic, I guess much in the way Scarface is.

Have you seen Ichi the Killer? Tell me it's a masterpiece, Adzz.

Don't get me wrong, I smiled like hell when he said "Of all the gin joints in all the world!" Excellent moment. Yeah, Scarface is superb too, that's basically the 80's rolled into a film, much like the Goonies. The Goonies stands alone as an insight into teenage style and culture in America during the 80's.

It's on my to watch list, how high should it's importance be?

I'd have to disagree. The essence of a great screenplay is what goes on beneath the surface and both Streetcar and Cat (as brilliant as they are, I'm not denying that) have moments where they get bogged down with on-the-nose dialogue which doesn't do anything to drive the narrative forward. They're at their best on stage which is their natural home.

The whole point is that when they're sitting in the bar talking in Casablanca, they're not just talking - there's something going on under the surface. But in the likes of Streetcar, there are huge pages of dialogue where the characters say exactly what they think and feel. Rather like a brilliantly written episode of Eastenders ;-)

Well, myself and Mehro think it's the tits. I reckon you'd love it, it's actually a manga to film adapation, it's also very stylish - fantastic looking movie.

That's well argued in fairness and I suppose ultimately it's about personal taste/opinion.

Cool, sound's good. Reckon I'll give it ago now then. Also waiting to see A Prophet, worth letting you know Zatoichi is on Film Four HD early hours of the morning tonight. Get's good ratings and probably worth a watch if you like Seven Samurai - Yojimbo etc., etc.,

It will be interesting to see the level of difference between the Top 100 this year compared to the prior year.

There may be a few "new entries" althought I'd limit that to less than 5 generally.

I think it's wise that a deadline is set for a few months in advance. There are some films that I will always love, whilst there are others that I will enjoy and then never pick up again.

I, and I assume many others will also have staple favourites, but there are some instances where a film needs to be seen more than once to fully appreciate it.

The immediate film that springs to mind is the Exorcist. The first time I watched it, I thought it was quite laughable and didn't quite understand the fuss.

I watched it a few weeks later though and I thought it was fantastic, and it was only then that I appreciated what it offered as a horror film.

I'd recommend that people on the committee look to re-watch the films though becasue sometimes your pre-conceived impression or immediate impression is far wide of the mark. Another film that I had to watch twice was O Brother Where Art Thou which would have never made my list on initial viewing.
