'Redcafe Top 100 Movies: The Better Than Last Time List' Committee Selection

You could try something like Infernal Affairs; a foreign movie that's very accessible, in terms of familiarity of the basic plot and key characteristics, or essentially a movie that appeals to the masses of English speaking viewers in terms of storyline. Which is why it was re-made and adored by the mainstream audiences.

Or you could go the completely opposite direction, and try something like In the Mood for Love in which the essence is strongly based on the atmosphere it creates, in the absorbing visual (and audio? I can't think of the word...) beauty, and thus somewhat lessens the importance of the dialogue.

You should have a go at this.

Thanks, I'll check out Infernal Affairs.

I've seen In the Mood of love though, beautiful movie. The actor who played Chow was brilliant imo.

People who are saying they are interested might want to go through last time's list to see what's expected. Not saying you have to vote for those movies but you should have seen most of them.

Am I right to assume that for a film you rank 100th gets 1 point, and a film ranked 1st gets 100?

You should have a go at this.

An honour to be invited to be part of such a prestigious committee and all, Spoons, but I don't need any excuse to go on a movie spree because I've been flying through them recently anyway - watched Infernal Affairs, ITMFL, The Godfather I, Chinatown, Dr Strangelove, Dog Day Afternoon and A Tale of Two Sisters in the past two weeks maybe, a good two weeks that was, was thinking I'd go for Blade Runner tonight but I'm feeling more in the David Lynch-esque mood now.

I've still seen far too few movies, still educating myself. Need to walk before you run and all that...otherwise I'd just defer to others' opinion when making my own list, and then that'd make it all a bit pointless. Plus I reckon it could get mind-numbingly boring. 100's a lot.

Watched this recently. Really good, the haunting theme still invades me.

Sorry but it's an abomination when movies like Grapes of Wrath and Rebel without a Cause don't even make the damn list and se7en does.

Any suggestions as to the movies I should look at and you can also point me towards those horrible things called torrents so I can report them distributing such movies.

Try Wild Strawberries. I find the native language is soothing to listen to anyway.

You should give it a go, the deadline's Christmas.

You want to have a go at this don't you, Grinner? I can tell.

Aye, I don't know if everyone else is the same but there's always a part of me searching for that genuinely great horror movie, watching countless of them before being let down over and over again, most times struggling to finish the movie out of embarrassment. Must be a hard movie genre, but I'm not sure why. Anyway, that one stands on its own as a good movie and a good horror movie, could say the same for very, very few. Wasn't perfect but created a tense atmosphere really well and was genuinely interesting (which is what most horrors not only fail to do, most seem to disregard it as a key quality of the genre).

When you see movies like The Descent and The Mist as some of the more highly praised horrors of the last decade you know there's something wrong with the genre.

Can the following people go through last time's list and highlight the ones they've seen? Be honest guys, we want people who've seen shit loads of movies from everywhere. Or alternatively use the IMDB top 250 and do the same to that.

Have you seen Night of the Demon? It's up there for me but I'm in the 'show the demon' camp so in a bit of a minority there.

The trouble with horror is that we don't really live in innocent times anymore when something like The Exorcist could really shock people. These days a successful horror is doing really well if it makes your skin crawl but it's really hard to sustain audience fright. Plus most of the stories have been done to death by now too.

I'm lucky to have been at the right age to have enjoyed the 70's and 80's when good horrors abounded and the classics were still somewhat relevant.

You know what's really amazing about that film? It's how long Max Von Sydow has been around and how he always looks the same age on screen no matter what decade.

He's awesome. It's a shame that he isn't as appreciated as he really should be in Sweden, same goes for Bergman.

I know. I have no doubt that there are some real gems out there. But I can't help but feel that unless and until I truly understand what someone is saying that I can capture the essence of it, which means I'm never too sure of subtitles capturing the exact meaning/insinuation of a sentence. If that makes sense.
After a while your brain flips over and you think you're hearing what they say, a lot of the subtle meaning is carried by gesture and expression anyway.

The previous list had too many American/gangster/police/fight/kill/war movies. I hope the panel can come with something more interesting that also reflects the other aspects of the universe.

You mean tits?

Anyone who thinks 'Shankshaw Redemption' is one of the 100 best is out right now.

I quite enjoyed it. But how it tops so many best film lists is beyond me. It isn't even as good as the King short story that it came from.

I have seen a lot of movies, or at least what I consider a lot compared to other people I know, and from many countries. I also am about to move away from all my friends and family so down time o'plenty I will have. Just want to make it clear what I'm getting into here.

If the movie was made in the last 30 years and is any good I've most likely seen it. My unseen list on IMDB top 250 list is below 20 of movies made after the year 1960.
That might give you the jist of what I've seen.

edit: So there's 25 movies on the last list that I haven't seen. 5 of which are in the top 50. At least half of them are firmly on my watch list.

The ones on the list I've seen, spoilered to cut down on board spammage:

IMDB top 250...pffftt!

Citizen Kane sits at 38th...two places below Toy Story 3. The first Kubrick film is 34th.

This guys correct.

I hate to keep saying it, but They Shoot Pictures is a much better list, due to the fact it's not voted on by general film goers and is a list formed together from actual film scholar lists. So naturally as a lot of those scholars like to see if a film can hold it's hype over 10-20 years....there also isn't a great deal of modern films. Although the biggest flaw in it of course is that somehow The Godfather III was in the top 300 last time I fully looked at it.
