I remember how I felt when Shankly left. I was only a young man. I had no missus and kids. Mam, Dad, Sisters, Brothers, Mates and LFC, that was it. And at that stage of my life, Shankly was at least equal if not more important than any of them. So, I was devestated when he retired. In fact, I refused to accept it, but I wasn't the only one. Me and a couple of mates made up a song about Shanks coming back. And loads of match goers refused to believe he was gone until we seen Bob leading us from the dug out for our first home game of the season.
It's weird thinking about it now, but after Bill retired in the summer, he still lead us out in the next season's opener against Leeds in the Charity Shield. In fact, Clough had just got the Leeds job from Revie. So it was strange to see him leading Leeds out next to Shanks. That was the game when Keegan and Bremner got sent off for fighting. And it was only another couple of seasons before Keegan was gone, too. That knocked me an all, but I realised, footballers will always move on when it suits them. It's just the way it is. It gets light, it goes dark again, footballers come and go. And Luis will do what he thinks is best for himself and his family. I hope that means staying at Anfield. If not, we move on, hope we don't suffer too much for the loss and wait for the next hero. They're not like buses.. one always comes along in the end.
