RAWK Goes Into Meltdown (2011/2012)

As I've said, Moneyball can't be applied to football.

And most of Dalglish's buys can't be described as moneyball.

I read somewhere that when Big Sam was managing Bolton, he wanted some quality in midfield but doesn't really have the money. So he went by statistics, looking by pass completion, ground covered, games missed by injuries, etc. He ended up with the late Gary Speed. It was mentioned that for the budget that Bolton had (around 750k ), Speed statistics was the best. The thing that was against Speed was his age, but it was argued that the amount of ground that he was covered each game was still good, and he was rarely injured.

It was also mentioned that there's intangible statistic that also played a part, such as leadership, with Speed having been captain basically in almost all the clubs he played.

That's probably the closest thing to Moneyball for football I reckon

Torres was different. He was the type who got you on the edge of your seat when he got the ball in the final third but Suarez is the most unpredictable, exciting player I've seen on the ball since players like Ronaldinho and Zidane were in their prime. The guy is incredible and a different class to Torres. He's much more intelligent too.

The best transfers of the past 2 seasons have been newcastle's in my opinion. They shipped out Barton, Nolan and Carroll and replaced them with Tiote, Cabaye, Ben Arfa, Demba Ba and the Cisse looks quite good too. I'd like to know what their dippernomics net spend ratio is compared to Liverpools recent exploits.
I certainly know which players I'd rather have anyway!

What's the website that shows an adjusted table according to referee mistakes etc?

That's just nonsense, but then what do you expect from a Liverpool fan? They talk constant rubbish.

Torres from 2007-2009 was the best striker in the world. Suarez hasn't even came close to reaching that level for Liverpool. True his form dipped towards the end, and he's never got going for Chelsea, but Torres on his day was 10 times better than Suarez.

They've earned £39m on the three players you've mentioned and paid around £22m for five players that you've named.

Suarez for me is the best player in the world.

Dipper-style net spending after they were relegated:

2009/10: -£16.25m
2010/11: -£32.5m
2011/12: £13.8m

Total: -£34.95m

Liverpool have spent £27.9m net in that time - £62.85m more than Newcastle.

Thing is our signings aren't really 'moneyball'. I guess they are in the sense that we've found value in an inflated market, but as far as I'm aware they're a testiment to very traditional scouting methods rather than basing things heavily on statistics.

There was a good interview with our head scout Graham Carr on the official website before the start of the season where he was explaining as a Newcastle fan he's seen far too much money wasted on poor buys and felt a heavy sense of responsibility in making sure we got the right players. This meant when he was looking at players he wasn't just looking at the quality of the player but also wanted to make sure that they were players who would be appreciated by the fans and also have the personality to adapt. For example somebody like Cabaye is a talented player but he's also a nasty twat who is willing to put the boot in, and run around like a headless chicken if necessary.

We've got a lot of praise for our signings in over the last 2 years but the process is actually a very simple one. There is no mass scouting network or database packed with stats like some clubs have. Just a case of targeting a market filled with suitable players/prices (France and Holland) and having somebody who knows what kind of players to pick for the club. Who was it who said football was a simple game?

There's a hell of a lot of luck involved in signings working out as well...

At the start of 2009/10 Liverpool had Alonso and Mascherano in their midfield, now they're left with Adam and Henderson. Shocking.

Actually, there's only been improvement at left back as Enrique is miles ahead of Aurelio.

They lost Arbeloa, Riera, Torres, Mascherano and Alonso from their first team. They were replaced by Johnson, Downing, Suarez/Carroll, Henderson and Adam. Poor.

I dont get that table, the "real premier league" table I mean. They have Citeh at 1 point better off but with 6 more goals from somewhere. Someone explain that one to me?

Depends on the incidents. Might have been denied some penalties when winning comfortably.

The Rules:

"Goals incorrectly ruled out will be given and goals incorrectly given will be ruled out.
Penalties that aren’t given will be given as a goal.
How the game may have changed after the goal is anybody’s guess, so goals scored after a debatable decision will remain unless they are also debatable decisions."

Taken from the site. If you go here: http://www.debatabledecisions.com/tables, there's a link on the right hand side of the page that gives you an example of the rules being used in a match.

Slightly disappointed that the "shaky camera" has yet to make an appearance.

According to Dippernomics Carroll more than paid for every single one of those Newcastle players.

Funnily enough all of those players would not only improve Liverpool, but would be their best players too.
