He needs someone else to rotate with, so he can have more rest and then be a bit sharper when he gets an opportunity. He’s lost both confidence and got progressively more sluggish.
Or he's not or has never been good enough.
Looking at the signings we've made in the last two years that would be my general opinion.
Poor kid.
This is exactly why it’s sad. If he was banging then in for arsenal (which I’m certain he would) then you’d be having the first go at the club. He’s clearly very talented, doesn’t take a genius to realise playing striker at the moment for Utd is nigh on impossible. He gets paid thousands of quid a week to jog about at a club he’s nowhere good enough to be starting for.
He’s lucked out ffs!

True. But undoubtedly Wout offered much more in the buildup and defensively. I'm not sure if a striker that has only finishing is enough on this level.Wasn't just Weghorst though. Last season's side was a very different team. Literally.
Højlund has scored 5 goals in 21 appearances so far. Wout had 2 in 31. There's a clear difference.Unfortunately, right now Hojlund isn't a better footballer than Weghorst.
Weghorst:
Buildup play
Workrate
Passing
Linkup play
Shooting
Pressing
Positioning
Hojlund:
Pace
Physicality
Acceleration
Equal:
Holdup play
Heading
Goalscoring
Man United are 6th in the league for big chances missed. 8th for shots per gameHe’s done nothing wrong, nobody ever passes to him. This team is awful at creating chances. He would score goals for Liverpool, 100%. I really don’t know how anyone can judge anything of him in games like today, it’s not like he’s missing chances all game. Kane wouldn’t be scoring in this team, we don’t create chances for our strikers.
Garnacho is already moving in that direction and from that point onwards is always in the better place to receive the ball. If you want Hojlund to sprint more there he'd most likely end up blocking the better pass.At 34:20 on the clock, when Antony picks up a loose ball...
I believe that was the first time today since Rasmus has been at the club, where I genuinely thought that he lacks a striker's instinct.
He should have been absolutely busting a gut to get towards the box and receive the pass from Antony for a chance on goal, but instead it was Garnacho who busted a gut and ended up receiving the ball from Antony before firing a tame shot at goal.
I hope it was just a one-off from Højlund but it was very concerning to see.

https://www.redcafe.net/threads/wout-weghorst-2022-23-performances.475014/I'll give you that. Fine margins for everything, but right now I would rather have Weghorst instead of Hojlund and that's mainly because of the former's better linkup play.

Don't see how you can give hold up play to Rasmus given how often he loses it in those back to goal situations. He has a higher ceiling of course but Weghorst knew his game and how to do the basics right. Hojlund plays like a kid who is used to being able to physically dominate a lower level of opponent and now that he is at the top level some basic fundamental issues are being exposed.
That is not a strange thing for young strikers, but at the moment I am far more concerned with his technique than his goal record.
Actually I don't think Hojlund has a better holdup play. I think both Weghorst and Hojlund are equal regarding that football aspect (see original post).
They are not equal. Weghorst was better at itActually I don't think Hojlund has a better holdup play. I think both Weghorst and Hojlund are equal regarding that football aspect (see original post).
Yes if a new striker comes into this team and starts banging them in I’ll happily concede. It’s not impossible to score for Utd generally, but this season it’s classy very difficult.I see.
So if Utd sign a striker in a few weeks who starts banging them in, you’ll obviously be conceding that what you’re writing here is complete nonsense…?
If it’s ‘impossible’ to score goals at Utd then literally no one should be able to it.
We have been exposed to enough torture alreadyI’d take him out of the firing line against Villa. Put Rashford through the middle.
He completed 11 passes today, 7 accurate, 4 missed. 17 touches, out of which two were unsuccessful (defined as a loss of ball due to bad technique without the opposition of the opponent)Did he receive the ball at least once today? No one provides him with any passes
So take out Hojlund (makes sense), Put in Rashford?I’d take him out of the firing line against Villa. Put Rashford through the middle.
Antony and Garnacho gave him a combined total of one pass during their stint on pitch.....Did he receive the ball at least once today? No one provides him with any passes
You must be a glutton for tortureI’d take him out of the firing line against Villa. Put Rashford through the middle.
UCL goals. Two away vs a full strength BayernWhat are the things you’ve seen during his time here that make you confident in this statement?
Impressive, quite frankly. In a bad way, but seriously impressive nonethelessAntony and Garnacho gave him a combined total of one pass during their stint on pitch.....
