Yes he needs better service but his movement and poor touch are also at fault here. He has a habit of hiding behind defenders

We had Shaw, Martinez and Varane starting fairly consistently. Had none of that to date. Casemiro and Eriksen starting regularly. None of that to date. Add that to an inform Rashford.
And we still had negative goal difference for most of last season with Rashford as the only attacking player who looked like he could get a goal

I’m afraid would be much better off with someone like Solanke - entering his prime years, experienced in the league and more useful in the buildup.

Even a player like Cunha, who currently has some big deficiencies, would have been a waaaay better signing than Hojlund. At the very least he's a genuinely elite ball carrier - something we're desperate for - a very good passer, uses his physicality really well and is one of the best pressing forwards in Europe. A lot more obvious qualities to build on than Hojlund has.

I like that shout, the ball goes to his feet, sticks and can turn and lead a counter attack, which opens up chances for others.

Right now with Martial and Sancho semi retired the attack is made up of painfully one dimensional, tunnel vision players, it is such poor squad composition. Should have been all over Gabriel Jesus when he was leaving City, yes he is not a great finisher but his all round game would be the best of our attack by miles.

From an attacking perspective, yes. Though we functioned far better as a team last season. That was largely due to several players who have been consistently unavailable for us this season.

He started the season fairly well (even if he wasn't scoring in the league), but he's obviously struggled big time for the last month or so. We really need to take him out of the firing line for a while but we don't have other options. Maybe play Rashford up front for a couple of games, and hope Hojlund might be able to bundle a goal in off the bench to kickstart his season.

Ive been talking about the attack quite obviously in the striker thread…

The original post I replied to stated that the team functioned better with Weghorst up top. I merely commented that there are many contributing factors, not just Weghorst.
Fair enough. I assumed they were also talking about the attack

I get that Højlund is a big disappointed, but the rose tinted glasses for Weghorst here are kind of hilarious. He was certainly no better.
Of course he wasn't better. But he wasn't worse either. Which is damning thing when you consider 72 mil difference.

It’s sympathetic that people are defending him and there are obviously mitigating factors but the simple fact is that right now he’s nowhere near good enough and we need to stop playing him and try something else right now.

Poor kid. He’s a top talent and in a proper team would be scoring goals already. He’s been set up to fail by a shocking team, poor supporting cast and a fanbase who can’t get behind their players. Seriously hope this club doesn’t bring in any more talented players until the culture of fixed too to bottom because it’s career suicide!
Is he actually? What is so top about him which tells you that he will score 20 goals per season?

A lost little boy.

We're such a stupid club. We spent years buying ancient past it and not good enough strikers; Cavani, Ronaldo, Ighalo, Weghorst.

Then we go the exact opposite route. A very young, completely unproven player tossed into the lion pit.

God forbid we just buy a good solid striker in their mid to late 20s. Nah, that would be too fecking sensible.

feel sorry for the lad, he should be coming off the bench for the last 20 but is having to play every match, inept from the club not to bring in an experienced striker (even on loan) last summer.

I think we were even worse with Rashford up front though and that's saying something.

Those of them who are good enough don't either want to come or want over 500k per week wages after 100m+ transfer fee + nothing says they will be a instant Robin van Persie like success either.

The quote from the west ham guy spoke volumes. Before he receives the ball he's already scanning for runs from Kumus and Bowen.

There is literally noone who does that in our team. Maybe Erikson can do it if he gets back in the team

It’s alright buying players with potential that you can build but you need an established team who are playing well to bring them in but by bit. He’s been thrown into an out of form team with out of form players who offer little service. Lads confidence is going to be shot.

There's definietly an element of him not getting the ball from any of our wingers. Antony did put a decent cross in for him though and if his movement had been better he would have scored and also Bruno fed a pass to him in the first half and he just didn't get hold of it and was outmuscled by the defender.

So we have a striker that barely gets the ball and when he does get it doesn't do an awful lot.

I sympathise with him and think even prime RVN would struggle in this team but honestly i think this move might have been way too soon for him. Martial by contrast was looking a far better talent in his first season in an equally poor team.

I know that blind faith is part of fans life but how anybody can watch him game after game and blame service only? Yes, service is bad but he is not helping either. Look at his movement. He looks completely lost on the pitch. When he gets close to the ball, every defender bullies him. When was last time when he made it difficult for any defender?
And look at his positioning in penalty box; he is not even close to any cross or pass.

We bought him way too early. He is not ready for PL.

Most inept pair of suppliers, would destroy any player, look how packed the box is because the defence isn’t stretched to the flanks.
You could run a line from halfway flag to the goalpost on both sides, outside of that is a virtual no go area, Anthony wants kicking into fecking orbit, he’s absolutely terrible.

Thing is, we didn’t need a RVP quality player or to splash 100m. There were sensible options around - Cunha quoted before, Solanke that I mentioned still before his goals tonight - they were just not flashy enough for us.

He started the season with a spark, but slowly started fading. It's not easy for someone his age to deal with this, but at the moment he's very poor.

He’s strong, quick and his movement is actually very good. He showed that in the champions league and in his early league form. Clearly he’s lacking abit of confidence now and he’s playing in a terrible team with zero service. From what I’ve seen so far (very limited chances) he also looks a very good finisher, but we don’t truly know because he’s had literally no chances.

Yeah, its a shame. Ideally he would be shadowing an older striker, or we'd have a more fit Martial to take him out of the limelight. This is the time when he needs to be rested and benched.
