Raphael Varane

can he play left back?

Evra by his own admission wasnt great last year. The year before that he wasnt great either. His trackin back when the oppostion was counter-attacking was brutal at times. That does my head in seeing players not bothered gettin back into defensive position asap!

He needs competition alright, hopefully Fabio can give that to him & Raphael can fill that right-back slot!

Well I am sure he'll be able to have his fair share of appearances given the fact we're in so many competitions but if he expects to be a guaranteed starter, feck him.

I'm sure he figures he'd be behind at least 6 superior players. Wouldn't be a very good move for either party to be honest. Not at this juncture anyway.

Would do well at Arsenal or Spurs I suppose. With what they have in defense, surely it can't be that hard to walk into the starting 11.

I am not sure why the feck we would buy another young defender.

Really eager to see how its gonna work out.

With Vermaelen coming back from injury, and hopefully completing a pre-season, you'd think otherwise.

According to L'equipe, he visited Madrid's training facilities on Tuesday, although no formal offer has been submitted by them

eam Info: Definitely, Raphael Varane no longer know where to turn. After receiving a first concrete offer from Manchester United (10.5 million), the young defender Lensois (18), which is moving from its tray, would also be appreciated by Real Madrid. So much so that two days of his race philosophy, it would be according to our information went to visit the facilities of the Club of Madrid, Tuesday.

The adviser to President Perez, Zinedine Zidane himself, would be very favorable to his recruitment, as well as a loan in the wake to a club in Ligue 1. However, merengue leaders have not made any written proposal to Gervais Martel.

Surprised its taking Real that long to get involved, if this French kid has any brains then he should reject Real..

We could be buying him with a long term view.. Loan him out for a couple of seasons before bringing him back or just selling him if he is deemed not good enough to displace those already on our books at the time..

Why? Pepe is good but it's not Real have the quality we have in defense which would give this chap lots of chances to prove himself. Also, their manager is good with defenders.

He wants to play regularly, he wont get that at Real plus it would be best if he stayed at his club for at least another year before moving to a big club.

I wouldn't suggest it would be wise to stay at his club as they just got relegated surely he is good enough to be a regular at another Ligue 1 club.. Which is in fact what I expect United to do incase we sign him.. Send him on loan to a French Ligue 1 team..

But in terms of getting chances it will surely be better than at United given we have the best collection of central defenders around.

Typical Real, tap up the player before they make a offer...

Hence why it would be best if he stayed at his current club or is loaned out for a year or so.

They were relegated, best to get him a loan to at least the top division in France if not a premier league team or something

It's a bit of an odd potential signing.

From what I've seen, Smalling and Jones will probably take over Ferdinand and Vidic eventually, so it leaves little room for Varane.

Not actually seen him play, so he could of course be better than both but unless somebody switches to midfield, it seems an awful way to go for a squad player, although loving this policy of buying up potential talent (assuming he's actually good).

Who needs Zidane? We have Evra. And we used to have David Bellion.

And this fella

Agreed. Factor in Evans, and that's alot of centre backs that need playing time. Surely one of them has to be earmarked for a holding midfield role?

What make you guy think he isn't better than Smalling, Evans and Smalling?

I don't know about you but I'm not very comfortable with a center back who isn't above the average height. 1,80. That's a potential future starting line up in defense who are 1.73 , 1.91 , 1.80 and 1,73. On a cold rainy day in Stoke...

Phil Jones is 1.88m tall (6ft 2in in old money).

His wiki says, 6'2" but I'm more trusting of the BBC stats and the naked eye, which seem to indicate he is significantly smaller than 6'2" but with a very good leap.

I've seen 5'11 most commonly as Jones' height, but he's only 19 and likely will grow another inch or two.

Jones is 5'11 but if you watched him for the under 21's, you'd see he actually takes on the responsibility of being the one to deal with aerial balls a lot more often than Smalling. And he's dominant with it. He has a big jump and in the most recent match he won all but 2 of about 20 headed clearances he tried, the first he simply jumped too soon and got an elbow in the face. The second he didnt win. But overall he did amazingly for someone not even 6 foot tall. Its no wonder that some people get confused about his height because when he plays he seems 6'5

 He's not 5'11 for god's sake.
