Raphael Varane

You really dont know that though. Carvalho really wasnt all that last season and he's on a downward slide. Pepe is the only CB they have that will be a real fixture for many years to come and he's a bit mad and will miss games too.

If Varane is really as good as the options of United and Madrid suggest, then even at his tender and inexperienced years he might be able to become first choice in his first season or two. Pique managed it at Barcelona

We are talking about Real Madrid.. They have Carvalho, Pepe, Albiol, Garay, Ramos.. How is that worse than Rio, Vidic, Smalling, Jones, Evans? But like I said.. He shouldn't have joined us either.. Should have stayed in France.. PSG would have been the far better of the 3 options..

He's going to turn out to be a star isn't he. I wouldn't have wanted us to get him anyway, but still.

Erm

Because none of those defenders are as good as Vidic and Rio?

Carvalho wasnt great. Pepe was their only good CB last season. Garay hasnt established himself, Albiol just isnt that good

PSG would have been easier yes, but lets see in a year how many games he's played. Because if he takes his chance, Madrid's defence isnt too good for him to establish himself in it. Its their weak spot

He could have come to United and played fantastically for a player in his first season and might still be behind Smalling, Vidic and Ferdinand. Maybe Jones too

Its just not the same at Madrid

Varane is in the full French squad now. Really good prospect such a pity we missed out on him

Yes, very good talent. I have been impressed most of the time that I have seen him in Madrid.

Koscielny, Mbiwa, Varane and Sakho... Great defensive prospects.

Koscielny is hardly a prospect at 26. 27 in four days.

Point I was trying to make was France have some quality CB's coming through their ranks to add to the quality of Koscielny (and Rami), don't know why I posted it like that though... Brain fart.

Varane will be better CB than Jones imo.Where Jones will eventually play is a mystery to me.

That rolls royce definition was very apt.Already at such a young age he has strength and is an excellent reader of the game.

There is no doubt for me that he'll be a much better CB too.At Lens he was standing out from the rest whereas he was (is) a kid

He will be one of the best center backs in the world, that I am sure of unless he gets injured.

Even at Real he stands out! United really missed a class player in Varane.

Could have been Smalling and Varane for a decade. With the twins on the flanks, perhaps. That Clyne put in a good shift the other day. Might have missed out on a quality player with him as well.

We did miss out on a fecking brilliant prospect.

But We were competing with Real Madrid, couldn't do anything about it.

Arthur Friedenreich has a bit of something about him too.

Watched him against Citeh, thought he was really reckless going into challenges sometimes, tried to slide to much and looked a bit shakey, not his best of games i think but still his pace, strength usually covers he's mistakes kinda like Phil Jones. Too early to compare as both haven't had enough top flight matches but hey both will turn out to be very good defenders.

He looks very composed on the ball, not afraid to make the pass. Probably more along with his development then Jones at the moment.

My lazy comparison is that Varane is more a Rio-esque defender and Jones more suited to Vidic's role.

Jones isn't very good in the air though. His all action style makes people compare him to Vidic but in truth Smalling is the better in the air of the two.

Yeah obviously, he is nearly half a foot taller than Jones! Jones will be a midfielder anyway IMO.

But yeah Varane is quality, he oozes class. RTD07 was right he can dive in, but usually it pays off. His sliding challenges are some of the best I've seen, he's so athletic he just wraps his legs around the striker to nick it away, really is a great skill.
