Raphael Varane

I think the talk of him playing in midfield is very misleading. People criticised Carrick for 'playing as a third centre back' but Varane genuinely does play as a third centre back (even against the more defensive teams). He isn't in possession very often as Lens play a very direct game, his starting position is quite deep and he doesn't often move further forward than that (often the opposite) and he basically plays a purely defensive role. Nothing like Rodwell in terms of how he's played in midfield. Maybe he can play in midfield (I've not seen anything to suggest so although he isn't lacking technically) but he hasn't been. At least not in the way we use midfielders.

You sound like youve watched him a fair bit. Do you reckon we can adapt his style of play to make him a better midfielder? Kind of like we did with anderson, adapting his style.

Or is he firmly a centre back signing?

Only seem him a couple of times in midfield but from those viewings I'd say he's definitely a CB, he can play as an ultra defensive CM, but he offers very little in possession and all of his strengths are defensive.

In all honesty I'd say that I'd rather see Smalling play CM for us than Varane - but Varane could be a great CB

I don't think you can make a particularly good judgement from the role he's played at Lens, it's hard to know how much is tactical and how much is natural. That said I've not seen him play in the game that letranger0 said they played a 4231 in yet, you'd definitely got more of an idea there. I dunno, I've not seen him enough and I've not seen him in a role similar to how our midfielders so it's just guesswork really. He is comfortable on the ball and uses it quite well but no more so than Smalling from what I've seen, for example. His movement off the ball when his team is in possession doesn't seem the sharpest, I don't think he offers himself as an option well enough just yet. Everything in the defensive side of his game looks very natural and very intelligent, while I can't say the same when his team have the ball.

Is it just me or there isn't really much to think about when United want you. I guess its the fan in me talking but seriously why would anyone reject the chance to play for this club, especially a talented youngster? Everything needed to succeed at the top level for a young player is right here.

Two things to think about. Whether real or barca want you, if you're from those parts, and whether the level of competition will stifle your growth. For some players its better to develop as much as possible at a smaller club and move on to a big one when as close to the finished article as possible.

Reports suggesting that we'll announce the signing of De Gea on Monday, plus possibly this talent Varane; good business so far.

Add Snejder to the list and it will surely be Happy Monday, everyone can then relax this summer and just dream of next season...

don't think we'll hear much before july 1st personally - but could be wrong.

its all gone quiet with regards to this signing, any updates?

From what I can piece together from various French articles (despite my screen name I do not speak French) Lens's president Gervais Martel was quoted in a local newspaper yesterday where he admitted Varane may leave the club even if nothing is confirmed and said something along the lines of "we have a great respect for the boy and his family and want to do what is best for him, if a club comes in with €20m of Saudi money for Raphael we will say no!, we are proud of his progress and want it to continue."

There have been some rumours of Dortmund being interested. I also saw someone mention that he has exams starting June 16th and nothing will be done until after them, but that might just be a Twitter rumour.

Arsenal alerted as Reds shelve French deal

Manchester United may shelve plans to sign Lens' Raphael Varane after moving quickly to beat Arsenal to the capture of Phil Jones.

United were close to tying up a deal for the 18-year-old French central defender or holding midfielder after Lens' relegation from Ligue 1 hastened his departure at the end of the season.

But that interest has inevitably waned since the scramble to sign £16.5million Jones began when his club Blackburn Rovers surprised the big boys by making him available despite avoiding the drop from the Premier League.

Varane has options to stay in France or move abroad - where Arsenal could come in for him after missing out on England Under-21 star Jones.

Jones, 19, held talks with Arsene Wenger before choosing United this week and the chance to remain close to home and develop alongside Rio Ferdinand are believed to be the reasons why the Chorley boy also rejected overtures from Spurs and Liverpool.

He told The Sun: "I've always said I aspire to follow John Terry, Michael Dawson, Rio Ferdinand - I always watch what they do and try and learn from them.

"Defending isn't just about tackling and heading, it's also about getting the ball down and playing. Starting the attack from the back.

"Getting forward is a natural part of my game. I like to step in and take the strikers out of the game.

"If you have that in your game and can do it well, it's only going to benefit the team as well."

Makes sense, we have Smalling, Jones and Evans as our young defenders who should hopefully give the club a decade or more each.

Not that it will work out like this but our future defence

Rafael--Smalling--Jones--Fabio

:drool::drool:

Like I said though it probably wont actually work out like that as I suspect other talents will emerge which we will sign but on paper that looks very very good

I think it makes sense that we no longer need to buy this lad with the young defensive talent we have, the Arsenal part is neither here nor there for me.

did you not read my post? If Fergie was planning on Jones for next year, and was interested in Varane this year then how does signing Jones make a difference?

I have to hold my hand up and say you've got me there, I just don't see why we would need 6 center backs.

Well, Fergie might have planned to bring in one defender this summer and another one next year. That the one coming will be the one earmarked for next summer might not make a difference to these plans.

In any case, I'd rather we didn't spend any more money on defenders. There's a fairly big hole in the squad and it's not at centre-back...

I thought he was being looked at for def mid anyway...Varane that is!

He's less of a fullback than Smalling and to me looks less of a midfielder than Jones.

Brown will be off, maybe O'Shea too.

Plus, what might the medics have told the club about Rio?
Have any promises been made to Vidic?

For all we know they may have said Rio's back is living on borrowed time and every month now is a bonus. Or the rumours about Vidic wanting to play elsewhere may have been true, and they agreed one more season, a la Ronaldo and Fabregas. Hope not, obviously, but if either were true there's a good chance we wouldn't know.

Perhaps we'd consider sealing the deal and then sending him out on loan for a year if he isnt going to get games with Jones coming in a year early

we're going three at the back YHIF:

-------------------------GK----------------------------

-------------------------Ferdinand,-------------------
-------------------Jones ------------ Vidic----------------

Rafael-------------------------------------------Evra
---------------------DM-----------------------------

--------------Cleverly---------Sneijder/AM----------

Valencia------------------------------------

--------------------Rooney/Chicho-----------

The WB's save our wingers having to defend, allowing quick counter's as needed against Barca, the DM and Rio, sweeping up anything the the CB miss.

12 players? :nono:

?

Or simply keep young and take out the third CB to make the formation not look stupid?

Could be a simple question of money. Jones is quite expensive and it wasn't planned for this summer. Maybe getting him (plus the planned signings) means we don't have spare money now for Varane. Or maybe that's the reason we're letting go of O'Shea, to raise money for him.

United target Varane to consider options

Manchester United target Raphael Varane has admitted that he is flattered by the reported interest shown in him by the Premier League champions but is prepared to stay in France in order to progress appropriately.

The French starlet is a youth product of the Lens academy and broke into the first-team last season, making his debut at the tender age of 17, and has since amassed a total of 23 appearances for the recently relegated side.

Touted as a future French international, the commanding defender is determined to find the best solution for both his own career and the future of his current club.

"Early in the season, my objective was to play as often as possible with the reserves. Finally I have played in Ligue 1," he told FranceFootball.

"I am under contract at Lens until 2015. We are in talks with the chairman to find the best solution."
"Am I going to improve in Ligue 1, and reach a new step? I have to make a choice. I can sign aboard and be loaned, or join another Ligue 1 club, or even remain at Lens," he continued.

"We talked about a departure and it seems there is no hostility from the club, even if I remain under contract."
However, Manchester United are not the only side chasing the 18-year-old’s signature, with Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich also interested in securing his transfer away from his native France.
"Interest from Bayern or Man Utd? It is greatly flattering to hear those names, and I even ask myself if that is really about me.

"But I can't dream. I have to think about it and join a club that will allow me to improve.
"Remaining in Ligue 1 seems to be the more sensible choice. The most important thing to me is time spent on the pitch."
