Raphael Varane

might be an idea to sign the player on a long term deal and loan him back if he is that good....

who knows how long Rio has got left and if Evans will return to form....

meanwhile he'd be playing and his value would most likely increase

I'm sure this is just Brooking be a bit off the pace in terms of what's actually going on, but says we've signed Varane

But in this video when talking about being concerned about first-team opportunities for Jones and Henderson, he says we've signed a young French defender

Manchester United has made an undisclosed offer for Lens defender Raphael Varane, according to RMC.

The Red Devils face competition for his services though, as Manchester City, Paris Saint-Germain, and Lyon have all been tipped to sign the 18-year-old.

But it seems the bid places Sir Alex Ferguson's men ahead of the queue.

Speaking to France Football of his future, Varane said: "I know I have the choice. I can sign [for a foreign club] and move abroad, or I could join another club in Ligue 1.

"What interests me is playing regularly and so I have to think carefully and go to a club that will allow me to progress."

The France Under 21 international played 23 times for Lens last term, but could not help it dodge the drop to Ligue 2.

He is tied to the Stade Felix Bollaert-based side until 2015.

Only quote there suggests he isn't coming here. You never know. It's all a guessing game for us.

We have the best defense in the world with the most promising youngsters. Do we really need to strengthen this area as opposed to the midfield ?

They are reliable.
Its ON

but the article also says there will be a bidding war with other clubs also being interested...

feck midfierders, full backs and strikers, let's make a team of defenders and wingers!

Varane Ferdinand Vidic Evans
Valencia Jones Smalling Park
Nani Sanchez

Hell yeah!

F me we MUST have a sugar daddy.

We were slating Shitty and chelski and now were buying up half the continent.

Be interesting to see how some of the fans who are very much against the Glazers feel if half of these signing happen.

Looks like there's going to be a huge outlay this close season.

Maybe we are just using the Ronaldo money after all. It was £80m upfront.

Well I think that much is obvious. But lots people said that the club would never see that money is what I meant.

If indeed they do spend the money thats been touted around in the media then its a big statement on behalf on the Glazers.

Although they may have had they hands forced with the recent departures of Scholes and Hargraves etc.

Sir Alex has never had a problem splashing out for a special talent even if there is no immediate need for the player, see e.g. Jones, Philip Anthony. Still I would be surprised if we bought Varane as well, I thought the Jones transfer would have ended our interest in him.

What's your take on him letranger?

I have only seen highlights and some odd 30 min. He looks little bit like Smalling, maybe not so tall. Future DM??

Brwned posted some of my thoughts in post #155 of this thread. He also posted some of his own thoughts which are worth reading, especially the CB vs DM stuff, posts #200 and #203.

Pretty much every footballer should think this way - especially young players, but he's only 18 & if Fergie wants him - its for super-duper longo-termo..

Make the move to United young man

So we are oferring £10.5M and are going to loan him back?

It's looking that way.

I'm all for us signing the best young players around, but they can't rot in the reserves. Guys like this who are progressing so quickly need to play, so loaning him back to the club where he's flourishing in is a great idea.

But again we come back to Evans and his long term future.

If we are willing to spend that much on a player this summer and then not even have him for a season, his potential must be through the roof, but I'd prefer we loaned him out in this league so he could get used to it.

If this does go through it looks a bit bleak for Evans, unless he's looking to become a full time LB.

Evans doesnt have the pace or skill to be a modern day full back. He's a decent young CB, nothing more.

I don't think Jones' signing has any bearing on whether or not we sign Varane. We were obviously interested in Varane now and Jones was most likely on for next season, but Liverpool and Arsenal forced our hand and we moved for him earlier than we wanted to. . . so you can make a pretty safe assumption we were interested in both. The only scenario I could imagine where we wouldn't be is if we thought Varane may be good enough to not require us signing Jones - but that's a big if.

The way we are splashing out money based on these reports, we might actually run out of cash to spend for the 2012/13 season

to be fair we've been saving our pennies for the past 3 seasons. Still got 80m Ronaldo money (allegedly) plus whatever else we've generated.

Reckon Fergie was trying to get as much out of Giggs/Scholes/Neville/VDS whilst he could which meant he could hang on to the money till the right players were available

lol

I think SAF buys in cycles the last time we got Nani, Ando, Hargo and tevez and then topped up with one or two players each season.

This summer will be a big one for us as I think SAF wants to rebuild a new team as he prepares to knock Barca off their perch!!

I agree sadly, he did ok at LB last season when called on, but it doesn't seem realistic that he could make it a permanent position.
