This generation has been pretty dire so far. I don't even own one of these consoles yet as the best games haven't even been exclusive to the new generation.

FFXVI is the first game that has actually made me interested in buying a new console, and that will be over two and a half years since the console released. Other than that, it has been a pretty pathetic showing up to this point.

Xbox - they have been too slow with their games development, or just badly timed with it. Their initial expo sounded interesting (Avowed, Fable, and, supposedly, another AAA RPG in development), along with the acquisition of Bethesda. Timing of their purchase of Bethesda wasn't exactly the best, to be honest - Starfield doesn't have anywhere near the draw of Elder Scrolls, which is a problem.

This generation has exposed how we have run out of ideas in mainstream gaming, i can't count the amount of times i've started a game optimistically only to be x amount of hours in and quit as i've played this game before just in a different skin.

Feels like reviews have been extra generous this generation due to the lack of actual decent games, Deathloop, Horizon, FF7 remake, Halo all well overscored.

Miles was such a short game haha.

Funny enough I completed Miles and then took me about a year to finish Spider-Man. Really enjoyed the final acts of Spider-Man.

Not that short. Easily 10-12 hours if you're doing side stuff alongside the story.

I've no doubt it was fatigue from smashing the main game 100% + DLC rather than anything specific to Miles.

Hoping they have enough new to bring to the table so it isn't a tired formula. Maybe having a while away from web swinging will bring me back in, because to be fair the base game is just a Ubisoft open world with a spiderman skin anyway - but luckily the traversal and combat makes it work despite that. Need to see how they handle the world. If it's just Manhattan again, could get boring fast.

sounds like the daft lot with halo, laughable game in the end.

Not at all. The campaign is good, the multiplayer is great. That they haven't had tons of content post launch doesn't denote the quality of the product, and compared to the vast majority of games released today it had a huge amount of content anyway.

Microsoft could release a turd in a box and Alock would defend it.

The fact Halo has been forever the flagship game for Microsoft and its completely dead and hardly anyone is playing it speaks for itself, no matter how you spin it.

Sonybros are definitely the people to listen to when it comes to FPS's. After all it's only been a decade since the last one.

Should listen to the PC crowd and halo is still dead on that. ;)

This is a console discussion thread, specifically between the PS5 and Xbox Series X. No PC master race culture in this thread. If you want to discuss the merits of console vs PC, feel free to make a new topic.
Aren't most of them games available on PS5. And Xbox for that matter. Steam provide data on player numbers, sony and ms dont. Seems a reasonable source to me, better than Halo sux!

The online for Halo Infinite was great but there wasn't enough maps. Couldn't get into the open world campaign at all.

They originally put AA on mouse ffs. Then went with magnet bullets when people complained. And let's not forget the awful graphics they tried to get away with originally, only to upgrade with marginally better ones.

Halo was sadly doomed from the early days thanks to lazy and often nonsensical design.

It's the best arena shooter in the last 5 years on console. Easy. What's better?

It's not even short on content in comparison to other multiplayer games. It just hasn't got the frequent content drops and I think more importantly (even though I couldn't give a shit about it) isn't compelling from a customisation pov.

Cod releases as many modes and maps. Its the new weapons, skins, camps, operators etc. plus the constantly changing meta that keep people coming back to grind.

Dont think i've played an arena shooter in the last 5 years. If i did it was probably quake 4

Yeah. Gaming has moved on. It's never gonna be as big as what it was but that doesn't mean what it is isn't great. I've put shit loads of hours into Ranked.

Just found out another XBox first party title is performing badly on it's own hardware? Wtf is going on over there? @Alock1

Halo? I think this one is explained by people's tastes being absolutely shite when it comes to multiplayer games these days. As per @Alock1's last point about CoD, there seems to be a hard-on for the carrot-and-stick approach where the overall quality is determined less by how enjoyable it is and more by how thirsty people are for grind-worthy content. Halo isn't completely free from this but thankfully it doesn't jump in with two feet in like the rest do.

This is partly why I think Sony has been quite smart in not bothering to develop their own first-party FPS. I think they saw the writing on the wall when it came to the lack of uptake for the later releases of The Resistance and Killzone.

The lack of really fun multiplayer gun games is depressing. Gears of War and Halo were as good as it got for me and that was fecking years ago.

I hope they bring Gears back. One of the best series ever.

I was actually referring to this:

It’s a terribly optimized game on all consoles. Shame because the premise of it is nice and it is fun to play but FPS drops are very noticeable and Quality mode is basically unplayable.

Still, a 1st party game should not be worse on the home console than it is on others surely?

Anyway in other news, apparently PS5 has now sold (and is selling) more than PS4 launch aligned (chip shortage and lockdown having minimal effect it seems) which makes me wonder.... Is the XBox looking at a worse generation than the last?

Can't say I saw that coming...

I doubt they really spent any real time optimizing that, they had a ready made game to move from PS5 and did just that (similar to Deathloop). It’s not a major title. It's been out for PS5 for a year, doesn't look that great visually and yet still runs like crap after multiple patches.

I think Xbox has sold better so far than the previous generation, they’ve shifted more than 20 million of X/S so far, while One had like 55 million throughout the entire generation. Over first 24 months they sold 17.8 million units of Series vs 14.8 million of Ones though you'd expect better numbers considering the pricing of Series S and the value offered by subscription service which wasn't there in the previous gen... They are going to land far from 360 numbers.

It’s a shame they are lagging behind with games so far as the console itself is good and has nice features and user experience. I’m still using it thanks to Game Pass though most games I play I could as well have played on previous generation (and vast majority of them are available there).

I haven’t turned my PS5 on this year yet at all… cancelled my PS+ subscription as the last time I used it for more than 30 minutes was May last year (and I was playing GTA V at the time so not really something I needed next generation for either). It’s been a massively disappointing generation, and not even just for exclusives but games in general. If I hadn't purchased both consoles at launch, I'd probably skip them altogether and just buy Series S to play from time to time (only downside being small capacity). Gone are the days of PS2/360/PS3 where good games popped up almost every other week.

Good the new Zelda is coming out. Starfield looks promising but will probably be delayed to 2024 and the new GTA probably won’t come out until 2030. Hopefully Nintendo can up the game with their next console which I imagine will be out within 1.5 years.

Is it not because Microsoft are already so far down the road with the model if they own “x” amount of studios there already in a monopoly and catching up would be near impossible, that’s my only conclusion.

It's about the restriction of games on other platforms in general. Activision and MS seem to have presented a case claiming that there'd be a least a limited time they'd commit to for the likes of COD on the PS and Switch, but it appears to be vague especially when they were asked what the plans were for Nintendo's systems and they couldn't even show working tech on it. I haven't read the whole thing, but it appears the focus on the "cloud" is about the future and lack of rival set ups thus easier for them to find grounds to block, but in general it's definitely about the monopoly. They are not convinced, as none of us should be, that MS will keep their word. Well that and not enough palms were greased no doubt.

But there's a dedicated thread for this chat.

It may actually be good news for Xbox owners, even if not so much for Microsoft. They will probably have to invest more into GP library and first party titles now that they won’t be able to use Activision games to bail them out.
