Protests following the killing of George Floyd

The actress that played the nanny was the first black woman to win an Oscar. Surely that alone makes it an important film for black history?

I’ve heard that there is a possibility that only fools and horses and Dads army may get pulled in the UK too.

 that's a good point.

I think everything from 70s British telly probably has to go.

Removing Paw Patrol is just a running joke on twitter, isn't it ?

It is but it's been seized upon by the likes of Megan Kelly in an effort to undermine BLM and muddy the water.

People are believing it too. There are now more tweets about leave paw patrol alone etc than there were jokes in the first place.

Did you watch that 'It was alright in the 70s?' program? Some of it is absolutely shocking by today's standards.

Ah cool. What's the refurb into if you don't mind me asking?
Accommodation, both private and student. There's not much else going on at the moment. There is absolutely no demand for office space and retail space. Both those sectors are in serious difficulties.

Hattie McDaniel. It’s an important film in many ways

From his wiki page...

Tim Jeal, who wrote the biography Baden-Powell, argued that Baden-Powell's distrust of communism led to his implicit support, through naïveté, of fascism. Baden-Powell admired Benito Mussolini early[when?] in the Italian fascist leader's career. In 1939 Baden-Powell noted in his diary: "Lay up all day. Read Mein Kampf. A wonderful book, with good ideas on education, health, propaganda, organisation etc. – and ideals which Hitler does not practise himself."[11]:550
So another upper class Nazi sympathiser. Unlike George Orwell. He didn't fancy eugenics as well did he?

That was George Clooney's 'were different here' award speech where he trumpeted Hollywood's progressiveness for awarding Hattie McDaniel an OSCAR for playing Mamie.

I lived it mate!

There is a petition online to get the White cliffs of Dover renamed the Black Lives Matter cliffs of Dover.

I really hope that this is a parody. The cliffs are white in colour. Nothing to do with race ffs:lol:

When is the White House name being changed?

I just looked at that petition and the sign count is going up like seconds counting.

Yes, but that's a 'positive,' when you are in 'berserker' mood' nothing stands in the way; at least with only fools and Dads Army we will be spared the endless repeats. The re-writing of history seems to be in vogue, I blame the 'Horrible History' TV show myself.

What happens when they run out of statues and street names?

Historians of the future will ponder "just how did those Brits build such an empire, 'the sun never sets...' etc". without subjugating anyone, really inventive people did it all on their own!

But is there an actual sign nailed to them that says 'White Cliffs'? I mean they are just there, being cliffy and white in Dover, aren't they?

History books, museums, primary sources, secondary sources, the internet... between all of this we'll be fine.

I'm fine with moving statues into a museum. I don't think they should be destroyed. Neither should they be in places where they were placed to be venerated

. They will build statues to the Empire and the cycle will begin anew.

So History books and museums are to be spared then.... phew that's a relief, no burning of books, but presumably lots of rewrites? Not sure about internet, social media not really the place is it, the echo-chambers etc., transfer of ignorance, and out and out propaganda will be hard to sort out!

People who don't understand, or don't want to, the difference between a statue and a museum, are really stupid.

Yeah I don't see why not

History books don't glorify bad things they just state what happened, and that fine. If more people read history books a lot of discussions would not be needed. By internet I mean Wikipedia, archived news sites, written records and so on (although social media can be used as a gauge of public sentiment at a certain time)

Statues teach you feck all. And if learning is all that matters, then museums are also pretty pointless. As you say, the historical record can be preserved without the need to store physical remnants of the past. On the whole, though, I like to see very old things left alone. Purely on the basis that they're very old. There would have to be a statute (not a typo) of limitations though. Maybe leave alone anything over 200 years old and anything younger than that is fair game?

Are we all satisfied we've defeated racism now that we've helped spread corona virus around, unfairly smeared every police officer in the land and started a campaign to smash up some statues?

Next we should start punching anyone in the face who doesn't look anti racist enough.

As far as campaigns/protests go, this is among the stupidest I've witnessed I'm afraid...apart from ones that are for stupid causes in the first place.

I like this.

9/10. All your usual nuance but you miss out on the 10/10 because you delivered in under 18 paragraphs.

I'm still seeing the "racism is a bigger pandemic than corona virus" thing going round a lot. I don't get this at all. The two have nothing to do with each other. It's like saying cancer is a worse killer than falling off a cliff...sure is, but you can't walk off a cliff and not fall down just because you're fighting cancer, just like you can't not get corona virus just because you're fighting racism, so what on earth are you on about?

Surely the aim of all this (presuming there actually is one) is to bring amount meaningful change, which would involve education, a change of people's mindsets, and giving young black people better opportunities in life? Things that require engagement and a level of agreement between everyone. Can anyone actually explain how throwing a statue in the sea or telling the police they're racist for doing things like trying to stop drug dealing actually helps achieve this rather than just create opposition?

Sure makes you feel better to do angry things to show you're angry, but it sure doesn't do much to help either.

The only way these things make sense is if various state backed groups are doing it. Like Russian computer farms. It's the best way to undermine the entire protest because it alienates public support. Ditto the statues.

No serious, self-respecting activist advocating revolutionary social change takes their point of departure from statues and the white cliffs of fecking Dover.

It's so so so obviously a joke.
Do you think Daily Mail readers will get that nuance? I'm fairly certain it has its origins either in right wing movements or directly from state interference.

It might have its origin in right wing movements, but it might also just be a joke. It doesn't devalue everything else that is happening either. Though I would disagree that this is the same as the statues in any way. Taking down symbols of repression is not going to solve racism, but it might help a little bit in the long run. That's a genuine strategy. Signing a petition to rename the White Cliffs of Dover the Black Lives Matter Cliffs of Dover is just a mildly amusing joke.
