Manchester United 4:2 Manchester City

Post-match discussion

I love this United side.

Young, Fellaini, Mata, Smalling. So many players that have received so much stick. Well, they're sticking it right back up to the doubters and then some. So happy.

Exactly! This great run of form coincided when van Gaal finally accepted what most of us knew all along, that you couldn't play Rooney, RVP, Mata and Falcao all at the same time. I still believe in them as individual players but they just don't fit together.

Its finally all clicked.

DDG - what more could he do?
Valencia - his pace saved us once or twice
Smalling - starting to look like our future
Jones - a bit erratic to begin with but settled in well. Loves having Fellaini to aim at.
Blind - adapted quickly to City's pace down his flank
Carrick - barely noticeable as always which is why hes so effective
Herrera - quieter game but still kept the ball moving well
Fellaini - won everything
Mata - looks like the player we bought from Chelsea again
Young - is he really the same player we had last year?
Rooney - fairly anonymous again but worked hard to create space for others.

Slightly frustrating both their goals were conceded the same way, but brilliant otherwise.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal, speaking to BBC Radio 5 live: "I was very pleased because the fans are pleased and we are playing for them. The fans have not always had a good time because started very bad. But still they were supporting, and now the results are coming back. It's great to be a supporter of Man United right now.

"That is the most pleasant memory - you have seen the arousal of the fans. I cannot complain about the fighting spirit of my team because the first 15 minutes Manchester City dominated and scored. We equalised and regained confidence and then from there we played a fantastic match. Of course I think maybe we could have started this form earlier but the last 20 matches we've been good and better than most of the Premier League."

And here I was thinking we'd lose. That was just great today and I'm feeling quite optimistic we can get a result at S.B on saturday.

Or maybe the players started understanding what he wants them to do and they improved. I don't know how some of you simply put it down to the selection [though it helps]. Moyes could have not been sacked then if it was that easy.

Not surprising to see Niall 'dickhead' Quinn wheeling out FFP as a post match excuse. well done you complete bell end, have some decking grace in defeat.
Yeah what was that about. Footballing rules conspiring against City

Hey, did Lvg just say the players didn't realise Carrick had gone off?, thinking they still had 11 players.

So you think it's just coincidence that things turned around when the formation and selection changed? Also how would you fit RVP and Falcao in the current team?

Hey, did Lvg just say the players didn't realise Carrick had gone off?, thinking they still had 11 players.

I think he meant some players didn't know how play with 10 men. Said the fans were too loud to get any instructions across. Here's the interview:

Shaky start but even after we conceded the first goal I wasn't worried, thereafter excellent team performance.Young and Fellaini especially good plus Smalling and Jones after first few minutes.

We look like a real team now , it's getting better and better, dream to do the same to Chelsea next week and smash the league next season, then Europe and the world!

I'm sure he meant for a moment the players didn't realise they were down to 10.

The coaching staff told Carrick to come off while the ball was still in play.

What's more crazy is that pundits are seriously asking if it was all a fluke brought about by RvP's enforced exclusion due to injury :boring:

We`ll LVG was trying to fit Di Maria, Falcao, rvp, and Rooney all in one team

Which made Rooney a midfielder, where hes not much use, while an actual midfielder in Hererra was on the bench

Also Carrick is imo, one of the most important players in our team, probably the 2nd name on the team sheet after De Gea

Form table since losing to City (via Statto).

Doesn't include todays' win.

I have to single out Carrick and Herrera for praise. While Young and Fellaini rightly getting plaudits for causing city's defence all kinds of problems, I think without Carrick and Herrera calming it down after a frantic and sloppy start they mightn't have had that platform. Blind was our only poor player, and he's out of position. His lack of pace has never been more apparent than on navas early chance.

The day Louie won me over (@Pexbo ;))

Such a great feeling watching United play like the teams of the past. The buzz and the excitement that I used to feel is back. Ecstatic with the performance today. To come back after going a goal down in the first ten minutes and then putting 4 past them, Marvelous! Finally feel that progress has been truly made, Louie's good work was there to see.

Young and Fellaini, what can I say about them. Used to question them as United players, well, they showed me. Excellent performance from the two.

Thought Valencia was very good too. The way he defended, being the only man behind, one on one against Kun around the 42nd minute was excellent.

Everyone played their part. Yipeeeee!!!!!!

I didn't say fit them, but football is not as simple as some of you make it to be. None of you had Fellaini or even Young as starters, we are playing like a team, more confidence, imposing our style and passing it better than I've seen a United team in a long time, it's not simply down to selection, though it helps as I have said before.

In a nutshell. Van Gaal has done really well in this regard. I think we'll be in the market for a striker this summer though. In the last two games, 5 out of 6 goals were scored by midfielders and the other by a wing back. We are still a work in progress but the signs are good. It's still Chelsea's title to lose this season but second place is not beyond us.

Valencia wasn't bad but imagine we had a proper attacking full back who could cross? Would've done damage today.

Don't think we appreciated the fact that sometimes you have to get a little worse to get even better. The fitness and tactical work is starting to pay dividends against the other top 4 teams. Now we have to make another step up

Agreed, but I think we'll need a new signing or two to be serious title contenders next season. A striker is needed and maybe a box-to-box midfielder. Hopefully we will hand on to De Gea but I would not be surprised to see some big names leave the club.

Did anyone get the clip from Thursday Focus where they were on about the kid that got hit by Rooney the other week. The said how Valdes gave him his shirt and a the signed ball from the warm up.

Helen Evans said that that whould never happen at City.

Shaun Goater quipped yeah because City players don't miss the goal from shooting practise.

David May quipped back that it wouldn't happen because there's no one in the seats.

Funny to hear van Gaal say that the Carrick situation in the last 10 minutes was ¨a bit stupid by him¨. Gotta love his honesty.

If Carrick was hurt, maybe the best option was to go down on the pitch so we could bring him off and have a moment to adjust formation and tactics. Then no chance of such a mixup happening.
