Manchester United 0:3 Liverpool

Post-match discussion

Thankfully they were content to only score 3, if they hadn’t of eased up it would have been a lot worse.

This is why the manager had to go in the summer, the most likely outcome was he’d just repeat same problems and we’d just continue the same shit show. Cup Final is now history and people who wanted him to stay because of emotion will be turning on him already.

It was a weird take but then mentioning Rashy's potential two assists as some way of mitigating his otherwise diabolical performance is also a weird take.

Sure, but at least he offered sómething. Bruno, Garnacho, Zirkzee didn't.

If you’d given a City/Liverpool supporter the opportunity to write our script for the post-SAF period, I think even they’d have struggled to write this.

Difficult game to watch. We were losing all our battles today. Casemiro having a really bad day at the office didn't help but I think, ETH got something wrong today and wasn't able to rectify. Liverpool had us in our own buildup, so we couldn't really start and in terms of pressing, while it looked alright, it wasn't too much of a challenge for Liverpool to overcome it. And then it became very dangerous very quickly. Good thing that they kind of let us off the hook in 2nd half, could have gotten a heavy beating here.
It is a difficult position to be in. I can understand that ETH wants us to play a certain way to get us used to it. But in some games, it makes us weaker (for the moment for sure, for the future we don't know). Also you wouldn't want ourselves to play like an underdog in our home home stadium.
Actually, I hope he goes for it - trying to force something without changing his style to see where it gets us. It might make the present unpleasant with bad results but there is no real progress when we now feel forced to adapt and go back to an easier game plan (sit deep and counter).

Still convinced that whoever would be on our bench, when attempting to play more proactive, he'd have the same issues as ETH.

Casemiro simply shouldn't be in the starting 11
Casemiro should have flown out on the same plane that Varane did. Ideally, hand-in-hand with Rashford

Onana -piss
Maz- alright
DeLigt- quite good
Martinez- some shaky moments but decent
Dalot- probably our best player
Cas- terrible
Mainoo- not great
Bruno- terrible
Rashford 2 good crosses but non existent
Garnacho- didn’t do anything really
Zirkzee- couple of good chances but struggled
Collyer- alright apart from the running in to trouble
Maguire- decent showing
Amad- one of the only bright sparks.

Overall, poor passing and choices undid us.

Well said

I genuinely thought we started ok. The offside was a let off, but we were trying to move it forwards quickly and got a little bit of joy very early on when Rashford got in behind. Then it transpired that half our passes forward from deep were going to be wayward, and put us in big trouble. Martinez did an awful one, then recovered, and I thought generally we looked good defending one-on-one with the ball in front of the defenders.

Then Casemiro had an absolute horror show, and gave them two goals. We're in a very difficult position after that, and our response was absolutely dreadful.

I'm not ready to throw the baby out with the bathwater and bag our new players, though Zirkzee's finishing was objectively shite. There are persistent worries over some more established players, to say the least.

As for Erik, the pressure is right back on. Even as someone who feels we were unlucky to leave Brighton with nothing I have to say this is now officially a shit start to the season, and we have this bullshit international break to stew on that.
The move it fwd quickly bit is suicidal though if you can't keep the ball. It's why they kept countering us with extra numbers. No one else in the league does it. There's a reason.

600m Euro later...
We just need to sell a few players, buy a few new players and have a complete rebuild. It will need to take about 3 years.

When SAF was manager UTD averaged 17 points a season more than Liverpool.

Post SAF Liverpool have averaged 10 points a season more than UTD.

It's just going to take a little time and a couple of signings

We are missing Malacia, Shaw, Hojlund, Mount and Ugarte wasn't available yet. If/when they are back it's a different story.

We needed to get rid of all those players.
It's not a different story - we know Shaw is a crock, we know Malacia has a long term injury, we know Mount is a crock and to be fair Hojlund has a poor injury record too.

Relying on always injured players to have miraculous recoveries and never to repeat that pattern of injury proneness again is madness. Martinez comes into that but at least we have cover

Insulting to McDonald's, frankly. Our only chance was always that Slot would have some growing pains this early in the season and clearly that is not the case.

Frustrating levels of delusion led to retaining ten Hag, could've gone out on a high note and maybe been recalled fondly down the line but now he's, predictably, the new apex predator of United mismanagement and embarrassment.
Unfortunately, he has Slot-ted right in!

It's fairly embarassing that Ten Hag is now in his third season and has been beaten by a manager in his second game (at Brighton), then comprehensively by a manager in his third game.

We have gone backward since we beat them 2-1 in 2022, and they are largely the same team.

The first goal was due to the wrong pass by Casemiro.

The second goal was due to a push on Casemiro. Should not have been allowed.

Rashford had a pinpoint cross to Zirkzee who should have scored. Results would have been closer.

Unless Ugarte is the reincarnation of Roy Keane, Paul Scholes and Nicky Butt he’s not going to be able to fix this.

All the bad things that happened today are not new issues, we know we can’t control midfield with just Cas & Mainoo, we know Bruno is on the slide in terms of passing and decision making and we know we don’t have enough goals in us.

You get what you deserve,

I think some of the blame has to go on individual errors. Casemiro started the season ok, but demonstrated today that he's finished and should never be a first choice selection again.

A bigger issue is what happened tactically today. This was far closer to a performance from last season than the games against Fulham and Brighton. Our passing has been shorter and we we showed some ability to create chances through sustained build up play.

Today we tried going direct on every pass and transition opportunity. We kept losing the ball and conceding chances. I don't understand why we moved away from what we've tried implementing.

Some fans don't want to hear this, but we will always struggle with Ten Hag as he struggles to adapt to changes made by the opposition during games. The second major issue we have is that outside of dangerous individual performances from our wide players, we really have no route to goal. We spent 90% of the game in our own half, passing around. Its good that we've improved in bringing the ball out, but at the same time, we are wasting so much time doing it without progressing the ball into the opposition half that we can easily get picked out with one mistake. Everyone is going to blame Casemiro, but the truth is our playing style facilitated those mistakes.

The biggest indictment to Ten Hags football is that we struggle when we drop off in energy. A good system will allow for those drop offs and position players to be able able to play at reduced gears. This is why we can't play a good 90 minutes. No team can maintain high energy throughout a game, yet success under Ten Hag in any game depends on high energy levels. Hence the injuries, the inconsistencies, the massive gaps in midfield and the inability to create attacks outside of pressing situations or individual moments. Blame Rashford all you want, but the fault for how we perform lies almost completely with Ten Hag.

To those demanding we sack EtH, can you name a practical replacement?

Can you name a candidate and explain to us why they would improve us?

Also, 'anyone' is not an answer. It's hyperbole.

Not playing gotcha. Not being smart. Not saying you can't do it.

Just name a practical replacement and show your working.

Go:

And you lot think we’re gonna have UCL football next season? You just gotta laugh and accept that this is our level.

Incredibly flattering scoreline for us. We played better in the 7-0.

-ETH needs sacking
-Martinez was poor again, a case to be made that he needs dropping
-We have the worst attacking options of any team in the top 10
-Bruno is no captain
-We need a new goalkeeper and a new midfield

Yes totally agree. But other than that....

We lost because of no midfield at all. Casemiro and Mainoo were so poor and overrun. No strenght, no speed, no passion. Just nothing.

We hade some chances to score and should have but Liverpool were always dangerous because of non existent midfiled.

Abysmal start to the season. 1 win and 2 losses from the opening three. Shit performance today against a Liverpool side who just had to play their game to win easily. Time to say goodbye, EtH.

The manner of the defeat is very much like our defeat against them in pre season. It was maybe easier to excuse due to players being unavailable and maybe players being rust after summer holidays. However, today we saw the exact same patterns and it’s very very concerning. They were clearly setup to press as soon as our midfield received the ball.

We were never going to solve the squad issues in one window. We have washed too much money in the past to buy 6-7 new players who would slot right in.
All players that have been sold offered next to nothing, bar maybe McTominay.
There were obviously no takers for Casemiro, Eriksen and Lindelof.

It's depressing but we have the old regime to thank for this.

Go:

Well Liverpool took the manager who came 2nd in Netherlands and is doing a lot better than ETH, so Peter Bosz who came first is an obvious one

Crap again.

But I think we need to judge ourselves against winnable PM matches. It's no longer surprising when we lose to Liverpool, City, Arsenal.

* Frightening that our only upgrade to the attacking line up we saw today is Hojlund and Antony
* Our midfielders get caught on the ball too often. Mainoo is a great talent but he's becoming almost Pogba-esque in the way he creates space to make a pass and then waits a second or two longer than necessary. Casemiro does the same.
* Not sure what had happened to the sweeper keeper tag of Onana. The reason for ditching DDG was that Onana's distribution was better but his shot stopping was worse. ETH decided to take that risk. Instead, we now have a keeper who disctributes the ball as badly as DDG and doesn't save shots as well as DDG
* In top top teams, when players have technical limitations then a good manager mitigates against those weaknesses with his tactics. I can't see any sign of that happening with ETH

ETH has to go but the problem is how hard it may be for another manager to get a tune out of what is effectively his team.

You make it sound as if our front line were anywhere close to making a single reasonable decision, let alone getting a chance to score a goal

They were all shit, except for Mazeroui, Dalot, and Amad. Collyer gets a pass on the basis of being a youth player thrown into the jaws of a shark

Keiran McKenna. Excellent young coach who knows the club and would relish the chance to take on such a massive job.

Unai Emery, hugely underrated coach who has turned Villa into a serious outfit.

There's two and I only watch Premier League games.

Keane looks like he's gonna headbut this guy

I agree. We seem to start every season a yard slower than the opposition. Maybe for once we should just concentrate on getting fit instead of boosting the coffers with the States / Asia jaunts.
That was a hard watch. L'pool were faster and stronger and had quality in their attack. I doubt we'd have finished any of their three goals with our attackers.
Can't believe we've still not addressed the midfield issues. At the very least why not push the Ugarte deal through earlier so that he could be in contention today.

We are shit, simple as that. Get paper over it anymore. Who do you blame? At this point you have to blame the manager, give him 3 new defenders and still look hopeless defensively.

Amad scores last week. He dropped him and plays Garnacho on his weaker side. Rashford still starts having not had a shot on target in 3 games. What has to happen to see him dropped?

As for our midfield, non existent. Both Casemiro and Mainoo caught on the ball for 3 goals. Too easy.

Just fed up with seeing the same rubbish for 10 years. Different managers, different players yet the same shite. Could have been a game under Moyes today. The return on investment is atrocious.

Keane asks Salah was he surprised it was so easy today and he agrees with Keane it could easily have been 5 or 6.

This club is a running joke. Pathetic does not even describe it.
