Manchester United 0:1 Juventus

Post-match discussion

Tue, 23 October 2018

We learned nothing new tonight.
Juve are the best team we played so far this season and it showed. It felt like they were in control the entire game without breaking sweat.

We give our opponents so much time on the ball, so many options for them to pass the ball when they attack. It is the same, game after game.

Why not at least try something different towards the end?
Herrera on for Matic? Pereira on for Lukaku? Play Pereira on the right and play Rashford through the middle? Fred on for Smalling?
A couple of players with fresh legs in those last 10-15minutes could have been very useful as well.

Lindelof and Mike both grafted, world class save from Dave, and credit to Young for sticking with it despite seeming out of his depth. Lukaku looked clueless up top. First half was quite depressing given the investment of recent seasons. Jose couldn't resist repeated references to Bonucci and Chiellini and the stability they provide in the post match interview.

Why do we keep doing the same thing over and over?

We play Lukaku up front by himself because he's a big lad despite the fact he can't hold the ball up for toffee. Other than occasionally scoring headers against average defenders all his best work comes from picking the ball up wide right and running at full backs... and he also sticks in some great crosses.

All Sanchez's best games over the last 3 years have been up top through the middle but we keep playing him wide?!?!

Our midfield completely lacks dynamism but we keep playing Matic in a 2? Get Fred and Pereira in there!

Martial - Sanchez - Lukaku

Pogba - Pereira - Fred

Give something different a go!

Our centre backs were actually fine tonight but there you go.
Yeah I thought the same, he probably should have mentioned that. I mean they weren’t as assured as the Juventus lads but they were putting out fires all over the shop.

Saying that just seeing the other Jose interview and he singled Lindelof and Smalling out and praised them so that’s good.

If you don't think it's the quality of the players, have a think to when Martial, Lukaku and Rashford got 1 vs 1 with their defence.

They fecked up simple passes every time.

That is not the coach.

Don't bother man, they're blinded by their hate for the man.

They think that if Zidane comes, Rashford will suddenly play like a grown up and Lukaku will resemble a footballer.

Disappointing. We were comfortably beaten by a side who got an early lead and played with the requisite level of respect to give our counter-attack little chance and get the three points.

Thought Pogba was really good in midfield and looked our only elite player going forward again. So many times he created space for himself in midfield, but the team was so disjointed to benefit from it. There was nothing on so often. Mata was better linking the play in the midfield gaps in the second half, but we had no real width yet again.

Lindelöf seemed great with a lot of defensive responsibility when started to press forward and De Gea made some great saves, but there were five or six average or poor performances up the other end of the pitch.

As games go by, it is more and more apparent that we lack a holding midfielder to free Pogba up and any semblance of a player to make the right wing their own.

People blaming the manager :lol::lol:

The line up was attacking.

Get used to it, these players are shocking on the whole. Can't control the ball.

Do you really think Mourinho and Van Gaal have told our players to play so slow?

No. They're simply not capable. Speed of thought and movement is a sign of top players, not tactics, and we don't have it.

It's not the managers fault we are sitting at 10th in the league and playing like Sheffield Wednesday? Who wanted RomEmile LuHeskey for 75m and the zombie Matic for 40m? Who got fred for 50m and made him a bench warmer? I'm pretty sure it's that portuguese dosser named Mourinho.

What happened?

Has anyone got the post match interview?

Shaw said that utd might have played a bit too reserved in the first half, and Lineker twisted it into Shaw almost questioning the tactic approach in the first half in the analysis, then the fecking guy interviewing Mourinho then decided to bring up what Shaw had said as well  mountains out of molehills. Mourinho didn't click onto it and see it as a bad thing though to be fair.

We may need to take a step backward in order to have any hope of taking a step forward. Matic and Young are not the future and aren't helping that much in the present. Let Dalot and Pereira, or Fred, get the experience that they need to have any hope of raising our game a notch in a month or two from the dismal farce we're watching now.

Players like Matic and Young are players who can support support a great side coming off the bench, but they cannot carry a struggling side.

Maybe it's not fair to pick apart those two as there's nothing that could have been differently to scrape the win over Juve, but we have to start somewhere and if we're going to salvage a season that's going to the dogs quickly, our only hope may be through the Europa League, a cup which Mourinho might be able to win with this squad and keep us in the CL next season.

I admire you're positivity but the team could not pass the ball to another team member for most of the night, and tell me of one cross that was anywhere near one of our players. I don't share your optimism with this current squad, manager or owners

Like I said, it's not really the manager's fault if his players at this level can't do basic things. Yes, he signed Lukaku, but he did not sign some of the fan favorites who are very inconsistent.

The main issue for most critics is unrealistic expectations. Objectively, this is not a very good team and the results of the past few years are actually better than the squad quality. In this day and age there is a huge concentration of wealth and quality in very few European teams, and it is hard to break into that exclusive group after you've been out of it for years. United is good for second round of CL and to fight for top 4 domestically; anything above that is bonus until the squad matures.

The way forward is to quit all the nonsense and negativity, everybody role up their sleeves, and work to improve. And I get the sense that this is finally happening. The players seem to be working hard and giving their best, a sign that they do believe in the manager and his methods.

Or he doesn't care.

Hope your'e not right but I think you could be. He was laughing after Derby game as well.

I've always been a supporter of Pogba but don't know how anybody can laugh after a defeat, very bad. Could imagine him doing that if someone like Keane was captain.

He was in a hurry to put a new Instagram post I guess.

The mental fragility of this team is unbelievable. We could have played for two hours and not scored. Plenty of chances to counter wasted by poor passing, plenty of crosses over hit, plenty of chances to shoot chickened out of. A cowardly show all around. No idea why Jose didn’t change anything.

That's such a cliche. This team is anything but mentally fragile. The team has saved Jose his job and shown fight despite the poor set up game after game. We go down, we fight. That's mental strength right there.

There is a change required quickly to make the team more confident and to play on the front foot. Whether it's a CB or a RB which gives the team some impetus.

The problem is clear. The manager does not trust the defence and that runs through the team. Lindelof did very well today, and hopefully that will allow us to play a little more on the front foot.

Don't bother man, they're blinded by their hate for the man.

Lukaku is much better than what he is playing right now. Marcus is a big talent up top (look at the England games) but not on the wings.

The Jose bashing is natural coz he sets up the teams. Do you seriously think we are setting up correctly for most of our games?

You only need to look at Arsenal to see what a manager who instills confidence in his team can do to a squad.

That's absolutely not fair after this game. Based on the season so far - that would be accurate! But before this game - I don't think any United fan could have expected to win. Juve are really a much better squad!

We gave a good account of ourself. For all their dominance in the first half Juve had 1 chance - which was also lucky given the deflection from Smalling.

We didn't create enough - and Lukaku needs to be benched. Rashford needs to start up top and Lingard or Pereira or Sanchez need to come in on the right.
We gave a good account of ourselves? What the feck? We had 1 shot on target, and that itself was hardly classified as a shot. We created nothing. We set out to defend at home, against a counter attacking team, and had well over an hour to tie the game up and didnt create anything. It's a fecking embarrassing performance. We arent Stoke City who would be content with this.

He was in a hurry to put a new Instagram post I guess.

What do you want him to do? Start complaining about things that are not right at the club?

You look at him on the pitch and he is playing well every game. He was probably our only player who looked like he cared in the first half. Lindelof had a good game - but most of his best work was in the second half when the game was stretched.

A line up having attacking players is completely different from getting a system that encourages attacking football. Thats basic footballing knowledge.

Maybe be sad or angry when he loses, I dont know?

Whenever we went to press, they walked round us.

They have much better players than us.

Neither did Juve. Their only real chance was their goal and one 25 yard strike from probably the GOAT. Defensively, that was a good performance. Offensively, not so much. We were poor in the first half - but clearly the better team in the second.

I'd hope the team takes some confidence from that game. Juve are definitely the best team in the UCL this year - and we were never out of the game. This isn't a knock out game - and we had a bunch of players injured.

What happened at OT, did juventus fans take over the stadium?!?!

Btw for those interested, at the end they were having a proper go at mourinho. "Mourinho uomo di merda", put it through google translate
A serious question here would you be bothered defending this shit? 2 wins all season at home. Vs Leicester and that mighty comback vs Newcastle.

Juve were in full control and pretty much walked the match in their second gear with ease. That was an easy match for them, probably one of their easiest this season. Some down half Serie A teams gave them more trouble than what we did tonight.

We were shite.

The second half was decent to good. Wish we'd actually had attacking options expect an isolated Lukaku, Ashley Young and Rashford who has been useless since he got the red card for headbutting that cnut. Juve is a level above Chelsea on several above Newcastle so can't afford to not play in the first half. Will probably still manage to get through the group, Valencia match was much more of a disappointment than today was.

Fans exiting before the end of the game was very sad. Like they knew we weren't going to score.

Ok. Their response to winning didn't show that. A team which has it easy doesn't celebrate the way they did.

Anyway - I think that our attack was poor. Right now, how many goals we score is directly related to how Martial plays. He had a bad game and we didn't threaten. He needs help from the coach and Lukaku needs to be dropped

Yeah again it proves to me we weren't as desperate for a CB as he previously made out. They handled it well in the 2nd half.

You think he's laughing at his failure?
I dont.

It's a coping mechanism. Very common. I don't grude him that when he is individually among our best performers. I'd be on the case of some others who barely give a shit when they are on the pitch but show remorse when we lose!
