CL L Champions League Group H

Manchester United 0:1 Juventus

Post-match discussion

Tue, 23 October 2018

Comparing our attacking play to Juventus's. Worlds apart. They were trying to methodically engineer a goal through good play. We were just hoping their defenders would make a mistake and we would get lucky.

Just fed up at this stage. We are miles behind the CIties and Barcelonas.

When is this going to end? Our team is a shambles. One win in seven now? Other big clubs would be sacking managers for that.

We deserved nothing from the game.Juve should really have won by 3 or 4 and probably would have done but for De Gea.
Lindelof & Shaw were decent.
Ashley Young & Lukaku awful.
For a big man Lukaku gets bossed a lot by Centre backs.

Hard to believe the hyperbole in here after losing 1-0 to the worlds best team in the middle of our worst patch of form in years. Gonna retreat until it is less toxic

So much moaning here. What game did you people watch? Juve better in first, Man Utd in second half, but overall Juve is clearly the better team and it showed. Definitely not a disaster or borefest as so many here are saying.

And I don't see how it's the manager's fault that his attacking players can't dribble or pass in the final third; they were in good positions plenty of times and lacked quality to take advantage. You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.

Having said that; the team clearly gave it their all and played quite well against a team that played two CL finals in recent years. That kind of level will not be reached over night.

I think it’s a case of the same thing we have seen all season.

Whilst it may only be 1-0 and whilst we did put pressure on Juventus what did we create? One shot that hit the post from 25 yards? It’s not good enough.

The defensive line always starts too deep. Matic and Smalling only thought is to pass the ball backwards or sideways. Lukaku doesn’t move. Shaw and Young don’t run down the wing to give an overlap option. These instructions must come from Mourinho. Otherwise in the analysis with the players Jose would say to them ‘you need to bomb down the wing’.

Nothing is going to change under Mourinho. He keeps buying players and doesn’t use them. How can we improve with the same group of players that haven’t been good enough for years? Then can’t bring in a sub to change the game.

It may ‘just’ be a 1-0 defeat to Juventus but it’s the same mistakes being made. I guarantee we get hammered 3-0 at their place.

The mental fragility of this team is unbelievable. We could have played for two hours and not scored. Plenty of chances to counter wasted by poor passing, plenty of crosses over hit, plenty of chances to shoot chickened out of. A cowardly show all around. No idea why Jose didn’t change anything.

The sort of performance that demands not only a new manager but a total squad revamp. Players that are too old, players that aren't anywhere near good enough.

Lindelof put in a good performance. Smalling good apart from failing to cut out the cross from which they scored.

Lukaku, Martial, Rashford and Mata were awful. Matic looked the oldest player on the pitch by several years. Pogba hit the post with a super shot but otherwise rubbish.

What happened at OT, did juventus fans take over the stadium?!?!

Btw for those interested, at the end they were having a proper go at mourinho. "Mourinho uomo di merda", put it through google translate

I wonder why?

You are saying with a manager that is going to ask the team to press and attack will not improve the play? That is absurd.

Teams like West Ham show more intent.
The intent was there in the second half. We really seem clueless once we get remotely close to their box.

Yep so let me ask you did we outlass them in the 2nd half?

I just read Rio say it was men against boys, so I wasn't wrong then!
I didn't say you were wrong, I simply asked a question.

From my point of view, considering the standard of the opposition, that was by far NOT the worst we have played this season. In fact, I saw some improvement when we actually attacked or closed them down – which was not often enough for my liking.

We didn't actually concede (in the half you didn't see) against the favourites to win the competition so I suppose that could be construed a positive.

We must be improving a bit or it could be argued that Newcastle are a better side than Juve besting us twice at OT.

They had much less of an impact on the game in the second half but were definitely a class above us, which should really come as no surprise.

It was just interesting to me that someone would choose to watch one half of a current United game knowing that we probably play better in the second half, and then come on to a thread to say they have only saw half of it … that's all.

Well, I see improvements. If we had played them four weeks ago, it'd probably have been 0-4.

Lindelof did well as everyone seems to agree.

Doesnt look like Lukaku is good enough, but who the feck else was available when we desperately needed a new striker. Morata? ...who hasn't set the world on fire either. For all his faults, a dearth of available quality striking talent cant be blamed on Mourinho. He bought the best available at the time. Unfortunately, we need better.

That's 1 win in 7 games and 2 wins at Old trafford all season.

At what point is enough enough? We're Manchester United. How are the results and performances we've seen not only this season but towards the end of last season too acceptable?

? Heard them pipe up a few times. Hear more noise from PL opposition fans.

Who cares what they think/chant? Sure it's what fans around the world chant to opponents when they win away.

Pereira and Dalot would definitely make a difference in my opinion, they have genuine quality when the ball is at their feet whilst can't be said about every player that started tonight.
Pereira or Fred need to replace Matic. Dalot I don't think can offer any more than Young did today. He might have been wasteful but was really our most threatening winger.

Disagree with the poster saying we dont have the players. look at how chelsea have transformed in short space of time from Contes defensive tactics to Sarri's keep possesion tactics. Granted we dont have as technically players than other top european teams, but a more offensive coach would see a different mentality. We have good players.

Juventus tonight were set up to attack from the get go. We were set up to defend. I mean, Young only started going forward in the last 15 minutes and he was useless at it as well.

That interviewer has just dropped Shaw in the shit, fecks sake

I admire you're positivity but the team could not pass the ball to another team member for most of the night, and tell me of one cross that was anywhere near one of our players. I don't share your optimism with this current squad, manager or owners

All that money spent and we have no squad depth. We have hung onto players, Darmian should have gone and we could have got some squad depth, Jones should have gone and got more squad depth.

But we don’t have any depth do we. The guts of 200m on Pogba and Lukaku. We’d need to spend another 400m to get to where we need to be.

When is Mourinho going to get sacked? Pitiful performance.
That's absolutely not fair after this game. Based on the season so far - that would be accurate! But before this game - I don't think any United fan could have expected to win. Juve are really a much better squad!

We gave a good account of ourself. For all their dominance in the first half Juve had 1 chance - which was also lucky given the deflection from Smalling.

We didn't create enough - and Lukaku needs to be benched. Rashford needs to start up top and Lingard or Pereira or Sanchez need to come in on the right.

I don't think so. We have a way better squad without the handbrake on.

Hard to assess when the handbrake is taken off only when chasing the game. We should still be able to pass to a red shirt when it's on.

Hhhmmm not sure. I don't think our starting XI is among the top 10 in Europe. There will be a tremendous amount of work for any eventual Mourinho replacement to do. It'll be a number of years before we're competing again (assuming we are at some point competing again).

Juve didn't even need to play well to comfortably win. The amount fo times they gave the ball away in forbidden areas was incredibly high and United didn't take advantage of it once (Pogba's shot on the post aside).

There's simply a clear gulf in quality between the two teams.

I don't mind the result as I expected us to lose but we looked nonthreatening and that's the issue. Our performances this season have constantly confirmed that we're a poorer team than our rivals. Both in the league and Europe. If we'd lost this game but were 2nd/3rd in the league and with a shot at a title run then we wouldn't have the seen the same negative reaction.

Basically, it wasn't a one-off. And we should have lost by at least 3 goals.

We're currently 10th in the PL … I know what you are saying but I just found this funny.
