Post-match discussion

It's strange that we sit 14th, level on points with Spurs, yet they have scored 20 goals more than us. We're closer to 3rd than 3rd is to 1st.
And somehow also closer to Top 4 than relegation.

All genuinely bizarre.

This game confirms two things.
1. Hojlund should not be playing.
2. Onana needs to be replaced.

Bruno was magnificent tonight. He literally never stops running and never shies away from getting the ball. He also never stops shouting at people to get into position. Clearly the captain on the pitch.

I don’t think Dorgu should have got a red. Heclearly got the ball and it was the follow through. Bad game for him tonight, but glad we found a way to win.

That’s all we need for the next few months. Wins in some form!
 One of the most blatant red cards you’ll see

The win means we don't have a relegation battle. Whoopeee. Now let's somehow win the Euro League and make something good of this season.

- Did Onana yell "Keeper" for the first goal? If he did, then it is Dorgu's fault. Anyone know or heard him?
- Zirkzee is becoming fun to watch
- Feel horrible for Dorgu because he has been playing well. Deserved red though.
- Weird that Bruno is our main DM and Ugarte roams. Don't think anyone thought this would happen. It works okay because it gets Bruno on the ball but Ugarte looks a little lost.
- I'm not sure Hojlund will score again for United

If there's a renewed focus on set pieces and the outcome is anything close to tonight, that's going to be a massive help with being competitive while the team and coaching staff work on the challenges of becoming excellent in a touch specialized system without the right players

IDIOT OF THE MATCH

A lot of competition for the award today, the favourite had to be Onana for rushing so far out of this goal, when it wasn't necessary and clearly not making a call.

But Dorgu obviously played a back pass without looking and then gets a straight red for a bad tackle and takes todays prize.

A honourable mention to Mazraoui for playing the hard man and running 20 yards to send DeLapp flying. That could quite easily have been our second red. How are the players so brainless?

He more likely saved Ugarte from getting a red as Delap would've crumpled to the ground holding his face if the head to head went any further.

Some positives: we look like we are both defending and attacking better at set pieces; even with a player down we looked relatively comfortable; looks like we've found Zirkzee's best role.

We won the game so I think some of the criticism of the Garnacho substitution is going way over the top.

A draw and a win against close rivals in the league: a good week.

I think result and general performance aside there is plenty to criticise Onana and Hojlund were both shocking
Anyone with eyes can tell that there are plenty of flaws. We're bloody 14th in the league! I just think sometimes take the positives and enjoy a win. They fought hard, the goal mistake and red card were 'unlucky' in the sense that they are very rare events in top football. They happened but we still prevailed so as a supporter of Manchester United, I'm happy!

Get in there.

Mental first half and I wish every team we we played were as clueless as Ipswich were in second half.

Some fantastic individual performances.

Red cards and playing with 10 men for a full half or for an hour in the Arsenal game isnt such a setback when you consider we basically start every game with 10 men by playing Hoijlund.

Bruno was fantastic.

We're 11 points from 6th and 11 points from 17th.

We're 14 points from 4th and 16 points from 18th.

The bottom three are so bad, the relegation talk has been completely over the top.

Missing another 3 games is a harsh punishment for something that is more unfortunate than deliberately malicious though
- Will Dorgu miss 3 games?

- Onana needs to go. I’ve never forgiven him for how he treated Maguire when he was at his lowest point. Is DeGea available?

- Will Hojlund actually score again this season?

- Garnacho stormed down the tunnel when substituted out. Earlier in the season, he disrespected Amorim and was left out of the game day roster. Will it happen again?

At the same time we won a game where we were a man down for most of it, level at half time, no discernible presence up front and basically no goalie. Plenty to praise the rest of the players for in those circumstances.

I would rather have seen Garnacho stay on than Hojlund as I think he’d be a better out ball but we got the win I guess. Garnacho should really have got a shot off or played someone in on that break though.

- Maguire is my MOTM.

For a second when de Ligt scored I thought it was Hojlund. On replay he went up for it with Maguire and then fell over

Fun fact I think they scored the equaliser at 46:55 and we scored to make it 3-2 at 46:56

only caught the highlights but great to see the team get the points and dig in for the win

Onana though deary me, I don't think we have a choice but to replace him

Last two games have shown decent character to be fair. We defended out the second half very well I thought

It's a shame about the red, we were pretty dominant before that and I thought we might batter them

Have we improved our set pieces or are Ipswich worse than us at defending them?

At least that's all the relegation talk done with. (It shouldn't have even been a topic)

Thought the players put a shift in after going a goal down. Any talk of them not playing for each other or Amorim is wide of the mark, seems to be a purely confidence / shitness thing this season.

- Bruno deserves so much better. Absolutely gives his all, whatever he's asked to do. Some really good set-pieces recently too. Loved that slide tackle and run he had at one point.

- Dorgu looked really good before the sending off, although his crosses didn't really find the man (hard to do given it's Hojlund), was nice to see those crosses from the left. Linked up well with his teammates.

- Onana and Hojlund should be benched for the rest of the season. The former has atleast one mistake every single game. Just ruins everything. Just get Harrison in if Altay is injured, we're anyway "safe" in the league. The less said about the latter, the better. Was shocked to see him stay on instead of Garna, just doesn't give us anything, that dummy in the box. I couldn't believe my eyes, his confidence is underground.

- Defence looked really decent (Bar Dalot, who has -ve IQ). Liked how the wide CBs were stepping up, even following their man really high up. Yoro's best game so far, very good on the ball.

Before the red card we looked on course to have a pretty good game, bar the start, we were comfortable, had so much possession and didn't give them much. Hope to see more of the same.

Was harsh. Thought at most he should’ve been given a stern talking to.
I’d say pick a new sport for yourself and look at the rules before choosing that sport. It was probably one of the most obvious reds of the season

Thought the defence were all great (back 3) and I was especially impressed with Yoro who looked confident on the ball all night. Bruno was great and I'll once again say that we will miss him so much when he eventually goes he's the heart of the team.

Onana and Dorgu had an absolute mare but Dorgu clearly has lots of potential and will be good for us. We need Bayindir back desperately, I don't think he's even that great but just average keeper would improve us at the moment.

Going forward I thought Zirkzee had some good moments but as soon as we had ten men it was going to be hard for him. Rasmus was disappointing again and I can't remember him having a shot? The moment when Yoro backheeled it to him in the box and he stepped over it was weird.

All in all they did well after a shocking first half.

I am still going to really struggle with the idea we play 3 central defenders at home to relegation fodder. Add in one DM and two wing backs who are not genuine wingers and you are relying on 4 players to be your real creative outlets and goalscorers. Lets see if he gets the time to implement but it smacks of Ole all over again, good on road with a deep block but awful at home when the onus is to attack.

Someone on here predicted a Maguire winner. Well done to them.
Despite the clear low levels of quality, we more than made up for it with a great deal of United fighting spirit and character.

And the performance was not bad as well. So great credit to the players for that.

Most of our problems were evident last night.
A dodgy keeper.
Forwards who don't score.
And a paper thin squad.
But if Amorim can instil a never say die attitude, then at least we will have something to build on.

A win at OT, what a rarity.

He is off the ground, flying into it and out of control. It's not malicious, there's no intent, but it is still reckless and a stonewall red. Could have been a very nasty injury if the Ipswich player didn't have his leg a bit loose and studs off the ground.

Unfortunate but he'll learn from it. Same re first goal, was looking good despite that setback.
I'm not denying it's a red, and it's obviously reckless, but he does get the ball. I'm just not sure a 3 match ban is necessary, so my gripe is more with the rules. 3 match band should be saved for violent conduct, or cynical play like handballing it off the line.

I wasn’t at OT and was watching on TV, but the crowd sounded awesome in the 2nd half and towards the tail end of the match.
I might have got the wrong impression, but it felt like it was the fighting spirit, grit and determination that the fans were cheering on ?

.

It was unfortunate that Dorgu got himself sent off, but the lad is looking good.
A pity that there’s nobody attacking the near post when he put those couple of crosses in.

Also, another shout out for young Leny Yoro.
Just turned 19 playing in a position which usually requires a bit more experience and physical maturity.
Agile, quick and good on the ball.
Probably his best game yet.
Hopefully his development continues to make him a key defender for us in the future.

.

what can I say that hasn't been said... only that I still think the criticism of Rasmus is harsh - he never gets a decent pass. Late on he had one smashed right at him with two defenders around him, sums it up for me
