PL W FA Premier League

Manchester United 3:2 Ipswich Town

Post-match discussion

Wed, 26 February 2025

I don’t think Dorgu should have got a red. He clearly got the ball and it was the follow through. Bad game for him tonight, but glad we found a way to win.

It was red from the point of view that it ended up being nasty for the Ipswich player. There was no intent, it wasn't reckless and he wasn't off the ground or two footed. The issue was that he caught the Ipswich player off guard and his leg ended up in a horrible position. 9/10 nothing happens with those. The defender might get clipped and it would probably be a foul but it was just a combination of bad factors that lead to it being nasty. It was nasty as well. He wasn't hamming that up at all. I think thats why it took the ref a little time to decide on it. He was conflicted between Dorgus actions and lack of malice/bad luck and the fact it was fundamentally really nasty for the Ipswich player.

what can I say that hasn't been said... only that I still think the criticism of Rasmus is harsh - he never gets a decent pass. Late on he had one smashed right at him with two defenders around him, sums it up for me

Hes simply not good enough to make a difference in a team that isn't firing on all cylinders. In a team that was performing better he would be fine. Most forwards in the league aren't expected to do as much as he is with so little. You stick a player like Isak in this side and he would be fine. Not as good as he is for Newcastle but fine because his all around game is great. Hojlund doesn't have that at the moment. Whether he ever will is up for debate but being a young and inexperienced striker in this United side isn't a good time.

Two standout memories from last night.

1. Lenny on the ball in their half, directing Bruno and Garnacho, amazing to see and a le el of maturity and confidence he maintained all game.

Hopefully he’s starting to settle and maybe LCB suits him better.

2. Robbie Cabbage begging for Dorgu to be sent off and sticking it to Utd all game. I can’t stand his negativity to us now we’re rubbish, he shouldn’t be allowed into the ground

1. Thats a soft red card. He got the ball, as well as the man, his foot was barely off the ground.

2. Onana might as well have been in the stands. He was at fault for both of those goals. He has no footballing brain whatsoever. Just play the Turkish guy.

Maybe my expectations are just too low these days but I thought that was a solid performance overall. Less said about their opener the better but we recovered well from that and until the red were looking pretty dominant.

2nd half was relatively comfortable, I can't recall them having a genuine chance and towards the end there was no real sense of hanging on.

The negativity from the commentators/pundits was bizarre. Even the interviewer asking Amorim whether Dorgu was ready for this level which was a terrible question given he was playing well until he was sent off and was also good at Everton.

It's really not, it's about as stonewall as you can get. You can be unlucky, get the ball, not intend to hurt anyone etc. and still be 100% nailed on a red.

If you ever end up in a situation like this on a football pitch you're getting sent off, every time, in every country. And rightly so, because it's not worth a guy breaking his leg just so you can get a toe on the ball.

We won we battled but the lack of quality in this group is so apparent.

Positives were Yoro had his best game and the back 3 were solid.

Onana Dalot Hojlund again all poor.

And rightly so, because it's not worth a guy breaking his leg just so you can get a toe on the ball.

My issue with this argument is that these sort of tackles happen every single game. They simply don't end up like this. There was little inherently dangerous about what he did, it was just a bad combination of the tackle and the way the Ipswich player lunged for the ball as well.

I could probably point at a dozen tackles every game where the player committing it has zero control over where the guy with the balls leg goes and if hes really unlucky it would be a nasty challenge. 90% of the time those aren't even fouls because the outcome is fine.

I don't have any particular gripe with the red because it ended up nasty but I don't think you are giving those reds to discourage players from making this sort of tackle because the actual tackle isn't usually dangerous.

Clearly not when the opposition player is moving in that direction, at that speed and at that distance from him.

It's your job as a player never to put yourself in a position where you have an extended, straight leg going studs first into the shin of another player. If you fail at that job you get sent off, and rightly so.

I wasn’t at OT and was watching on TV, but the crowd sounded awesome in the 2nd half and towards the tail end of the match.
I might have got the wrong impression, but it felt like it was the fighting spirit, grit and determination that the fans were cheering on ?

.

I was there. Was a good atmosphere last night for sure. Felt like a cup game with all the drama.

Team did great to dig in and get the result after the red card. Thought Zirkzee was the best player in the first half (was wrong about him, he's a baller) and Yoro was great all round. Onana though. Jaysus.

Interestingly enough had Everton been given a penalty against us and won that would have been shades of when we were relegated. If I recall correctly.

We were seen as too good to go down then as we had plenty of Internationals in the team.

NB: not that I believed we were going down.

Fair enough but I meant two of the bottom four would have had to go on a run and claw back 10/12 pts on United. One could maybe do it but two is just fanciful.

Well I see that you posted in that thread now and the posts there (not yours) show clearly quite a number of people have no clue about the rules!
I didn't realise I had replied to you in that thread as well!
But yeah, I think many forget the rules in those situations and think of what they think is fair (and I get it was not intentional) but it's about as text book a red as you can see.

Somehow the player that broke Shaw's leg was never sent off, though.

Atmosphere was very good second half.

Thankfully football has come a long way in 10 years (although now I feel very old!), and Moreno would certainly never have stayed on the pitch in the age of VAR. Dorgu wouldn't have been sent off by that standard either as the referee on the field didn't see how bad it was in real time.

I think there was a load of guff spoken on thr match day thread. We played some decent football at times for a team so lacking in confidence . The back three were pretty solid all game. The much touted Delap hardly got a look in against Maguire. Zirkzee had some great touches but poor Hojlund is either nit getting a service or his confidence is shattered. Both Ipswich goals were bizarre and I am certain Onana was at fault. The red card was justified - uf it had been on a United player, people on here would be baying for the death penalty. O'Shea was a frigging disgrace clutching his face when Hojlunds arm was nowhere near his face. United played with great determination and guts second half. We really need to get rid of Dalot and Onana next year. Vitek is a star for Linz by the way.

When our options reduced dramatically with the sending off, we went simple and direct.

I think we played inordinately better as a team with ten men; just shift the ball up front, hope someone could hold it up a bit then charge forward, together and retreat together.

Football is a simple game when you have limited options

I'm not sure that's true. The first half apart from the brainlessness which sandwiched the half Ipswich barely got a kick and it felt pretty obvious we were going to put a few past them, even if we had to wait until later in the game for them to tire.

Second half we defended the box well, but never really got out with any reliability.

Lot of noise about Garnacho being subbed, whilst I agree that Hojlund would have been a better option Garna has been woeful for a long time, he has zero end product and has fluffed far more chances than Hojlund in the last few months, Garna looks good because of his pace and aggressiveness but it goes nowhere, he looks good amongst a shower of shite in attack, would rather have seen Garna off for Maz and Hojlund hooked for Chido

Yes, a clear red. People who say otherwise are blinded by their love of United.

When does he ever get into position for one? And is this why he practically never wins a 50/50 ball, or a holdup play? Or why he can't beat a defender? Or regularly do something useful with the ball on the occasions he gets it? The truth is every defender in the PL by now know that if you just get stuck in, he's neutralised. He doesn't have the strength, quickness, technical ability or smarts to beat that.

That definitely didn't happen.

Bruno and Maguire get a 7/10
The rest get 6's and 5's.
Onana and Dorgu a 4.

Bruno edges it for motm.
A solid game all round topped off with two assists.
Good set-piece deliveries for a change!

Completely agree with you about Savage.
By far and away th and worst so called pundit on either TV or radio. The man is semi literate at best and usually talks crap.

Seriously - his foot wasn't BARELY off the ground....it was as red as they come.

As long as there are someone like Agbonlahor, Souness, Simon Jordan and Dean Saunders - Savage doesn't even deserve a mention as the worst

Savage's commentary was so bad. When we were down to 10, there was a point where Zirkzee or Hojlund got the ball and he was like 'the 9 of Man Utd has to put his head down there and run at people' and there were like 4 opposition players they'd have to beat to do so. When they kept the ball and played a simple pass backwards he acted as though it was the wrong choice.

the main commentator actually called him out on that - what a twat

Clearly. If there was anything mitigating it was the relative lack of force - there was no run-up, which also made it look a lot worse in slo-mo close up than it did live.

This is what I mean the defence in and around the box was better than in the first half, because all 10 players joined in that objective.

That definitely didn't happen.
Its a matter of opinion.
I believe we had the beating of Ipswich from the KO, but setting about actually delivering the win only really happened when we were down to 10 men.

Yes we put in a good team effort with ten men. However lucky opponents were Championship level (they're going down). Any other team (inkl Southampton) would have beaten us. Both Zirkzee and Höjlund are passengers who bring feck all to the table. Maguire certainly motm for me.
Thinking last 2 games where we've met teams in the lower half of the table where we've parked the bus to survive getting beat. 3 pts yesterday and we avoid relegation and it's feels like we've qualified for CL.

Yoro has said in an interview that he prefers LCB over RCB.

I'd imagine that Amorim and Ten Hag both would've wanted him to be the RCB with a left footed player at LCB like Martinez or Martinez's eventual taller and more mobile replacement.

Yoros being moved around to accommodate Maguire, De Ligt, Martinez at this point but he'll obviously settle in one or the other when we sign more centre backs over the coming windows.

I could see us signing two more CBs in the next 2 windows. A LCB to replace/compete with Martinez, or a RCB if Amorim concedes that Yoro will be the LCB long term.

Also a CB with pace and height that is capable of being the CB in a high line that he eventually wants to play.

Only Yoro completely suits Amorim for the long term. Neither Martinez, De Ligt or Maguire suit a high line and will eventually be replaced/forced out.

I hope De Ligt or Martinez aren't the next to go though until we have better alternatives. Maguire has signed the extension as we'd be stuck otherwise. Lindelof leaves in the summer and will be immediate priority to replace with another CB in the summer.

Dorgu should still have looked up rather than play a blind pass. Both are at fault.
Shit happens, we won. Who cares about the first goal. Our first goal was them scoring an own goal, don't see anybody talking about that. We can be annoyed by Onana maybe, because he does some shit in almost every single game. But Dorgu is a kid, new to the team and the club, going hard on him for the goal or the red card is not cool. Dorgu is a good player. We won the game. We keep supporting him

Hope you are right budy. This team is driving me mad.
Honestly, have lost all motivation to watch the team and every game feels like self inflicted pain.

But it is what it is. Amorim said it will be suffering before it gets better or we will again be papering over the cracks. I trust him for some reason and he comes across as someone who knows the magnitude of the task.

The question obviously is whether our board and owners are up for it. If we listen to the media again and get Amorim out the door, before he’s had a real crack at the job - it would be dire.

With the current status of the club, I keep looking for silver linings. One of them is that we have won 6 or 7 out of the last 10 (though the losses have come in the league). The other is that somehow we are no longer losing by 3 or 4 goals, and we’ve doing a way to run back into our own half.

There are some minor improvements but they are always overshadowed by the brain dead mistakes we keep making!

I think they’ll buy another LCB option because Yoro will move back to the right. There is a genuine risk of him being beaten in the channels and not being able to make a tackle with his left foot on the left side. Both Martinez and Shaw are not showing any fitness consistency to have an impact on the team. Once we have that, it will probably be De Ligt who will move back into the Center.

Harry is most likely going to go at the end of next summer on a free, when we will try to replace him from the academy.

The squad needs much more investment in the midfield and attack, so hard to think that we will find the money for more than 1 CB signing.
