EL D Europa League Match Day 2

FC Porto 3:3 Manchester United

Post-match discussion

More chaos. At no point over the last few seasons have we ever prioritised control over this wide open, harum scarum approach, and it's hurt us again. A late equaliser gives us a snifter of pride, sure, but that was an unsustainable kind of football.

We can legitimately talk about the poor performances of the defenders and midfielders, but we don't even try and play the kind of football that would support them. From front to back we play the kind of football that leaves the opposition to streak out of midfield into our third with little resistance.

Of course the irony is that we don't even play on the transition all that well. A lack of confidence in defence and midfield means that our transitional play is tentative. We know that a single lost ball will probably mean a chance for the opposition. So you don't often see us swamp the opposition at pace. We end up playing slowly in attacking areas, but without the personnel to play that suffocating kind of football others do.

I felt ETH was always gone after the Spurs game, we were just waiting for this week to play out. I don't think much has changed.

Tactically inept. Weird decisions. Completely chaotic team.

  • He wants to play fast counter-attacking football but picks some of the slowest players around.
  • No control at any point, but absolute chaos at all times
  • No patterns to our play, except play it to the left wing, cut inside and smash it
  • Undone time and time again by simple switches of play, or a longish pass through the middle
  • The manner in which we gave up a 0-2 lead is unacceptable
  • No changes in tactics ever, just like-for-like subs and keep hammering the same losing tactics
  • Subbing the centre backs while losing
  • Awful mentality. The second there is any setback it all goes to shit

So bad. Porto missed 2x 1-on-1s. So open defensively.

I don’t mind these as much when chasing the game but they seem to come so early. It should like a 94-min breakaway when down a goal. We gamble on the hour mark or whatever. It’s just crazy.

Get Ole back for the rest of the season. This will be Ole's first real test..

For 30 minutes i thought we played well. The team was keeping its shape well wit clear 4-3-3 lines out of possession. We went 2-0 up and then went to rat shit. Lost the discipline and the Usual story of being far to open. To easy to attack. Our centre half’s had a mare. Never seen both hooked together ever.

Brunos boot was high, hes on a yellow and hes asking for the ref to make a decision. Foolish play. Harrys saves the day.

happy with the late goal but yet another poor performance.

What a crazy game. Felt like both teams either didn't really have a plan or really didn't stick to it. First United keeps it tight and tries to counter, goes 2:0 up, tries to become more proactive (for whatever reason), games gets a little open, Porto equalizes... Then halftime, we continue to be proactive, run into heavy counters from Porto, they score and we have to run uphill. And while they piss away two or three glorious opportunities on the counter, we equalize from a dead ball situation...

People won't like to hear it but playing Eriksen and Casemiro just isn't a functional midfield anymore. Eriksen, as good as he is on the ball, is an absolute non-factor off it. Guy just gets shoved away from it, opposition isn't scared of dribbling him at all. It is crazy to play him AND Casemiro together. I guess the rationale is having Dalot to push into midfield but that seems way too much for Dalot to handle.

Such a weird game and a weird result. After 5 minutes, I said this might end 5:5 .

Well played Onana, good cameos from Garnacho, who really tried to push something. Maguire... well done for the header but boy, this wrong offside thing should have made sure he gets send packing. Bruno didn't have a good game as well - his two yellows were a little harsh.

A nice ending there to go level when a man down. But ultimately a game where we were leading 2-0 that we didn't up winning can only been seen as a huge disappointment. Extends our horrendous run in Europe where we seem to be going nowhere fast.

Hopefully Rashford is not seriously injured or anything since he looked good in this game. Happy to see Hojlund score, and that's about it for positives. The two starting center backs were shocking, especially Martinez.

Would have been a great game for a neutral. Unfortunately, I'm not!

A point away should not gloss over what was another game where the system showed its holes and another game where the players showed their fragility.

Bruno is wank, and yet we build the team around him, every move goes through him.

For a ‘technical’ player he can’t help but over hit every shot and my god is passing is bad.

You can’t help but think his two reds are symptomatic of a player trying too hard to help the team.

He’s got great commitment but I think it is actually a detriment at the moment. He’s trying too hard and that is affecting his play and decision making.

Same old, same old
Good to see some fight near the end. Pleased for Maguire. Onana kept us in the game (been one of our better players this season, which is pretty damning)

While I don't think this one, just like the one against Spurs, shouldn't have resulted in a card, Bruno keeps putting himself in these stupid situations. Between that and his terrible play, it's time to sit him. He has no fear of being benched or even being removed from the field so why should he bother to do improve his play or attitude?

They absolutely let us back in the game, but I'll take the point. Was gutted when Garnacho didn't score, thought that was our shot, but the lads kept at it.

This was almost a carbon copy of last year's CL games. A year on, £200m spent and there's been no progress.
Meanwhile, "Good Ebening" Emery wins against Bayern with a team that was fighting relegation battle when he took over!

Ten Hag deserves to go!! Enough is enough. It has become a chore watching the same shite over and over again.

No style of play, no tactics, none of our players seem good enough. And Bruno needs to be dropped for 5 games at least given his poor form and his unneeded theatrics!

Ten Hag is playing Outrun and just made the checkpoint by the skin of his teeth.

Ridiculous game of football, another game United had but gave it away because of not controlling the match. Maguire rescues us the point and it’s probably not a bad point for the team but it’s very much an all too familiar story. Onana and Rashford were great, also impressed with Eriksen too. Defensively it was shambolic, the team were terrible for letting Porto stroll through us. And then Bruno gets himself sent off, again! He needs to step out of the team now, he hasn’t played well this season yet and other players should be pushing him out of the team.

Not particularly looking forward to the Villa game. Might be ETH’s last match if we put in another display like that.

If you ignore the badge and just watched that match as a neutral, then you have to credit the ones in red for fighting and equalising with 10 men.

3-3 away in Europe is a decent result in isolation.

Amateur hour levels of ridiculousness, I didn't even celebrate Maguires goal which is incredibly sad... can't wait for this to be over.
Yeah neither did I. It all just feels like waiting for the inevitable.

Wonder if everyone demanding he stayed after the FA Cup final win has changed their minds, absolutely nothing different from last year. His system is suicide and it’s difficult to watch. Gone.
