Positives
Memphis
Schweinsteiger
Smalling
The third goal

Negatives
Januzaj
Carrick
Not converting the second half possession into goals

I would mention the whole defense as a positive. They only had one shot on target, and two at target or something like that. Couldnt have dont much better.

He certainly think he looks stronger, and I thought that at Madrid too. It's funny that going to a less physical league saw him get more physical, but there are those rumours about RM...anyway, great having that mobility and enthusiasm up front again, much more lively than Rooney (who was better than his other performances)

Bale too got bigger since playing for Real Madrid.

If we hadn't scored the third it would have been a poor result tbh.

In the end, a good win.

Rooney gets a massive allowance, him being 5.5/10 today means he's banked himself a start in the 5 games. Any other player they'd be benched. We need someone upfront leading the line who is lethal - that's not Rooney

Shaw, Smalling on beast mode tonight

Blind is doing well

Tiger is on another level

Memphis was brilliant in the first half

Hernandez very lively and gave us presence up front

Janujaz needs to go on loan, he's not going to be our No.10 this season and if we sign Pedro, his play time is going to be very slim

About time! But still some way to go.

Januzaj

Didn't think Januzaj was too bad. But lost the ball a few times needlessly.

I like the Brugge manager

Memphis with two wonderfull goals and a superb assist. Looking to be a really great player for us.

Still, Smalling MOTM for me. Amazing performance from him and if he keep himself injuryfree he will be massive for us this season.

Bring on the toons!

A good result, think we responded well to going behind and we've given ourself a bit of a cushion.

Depay was a menace throughout, look what he can do when we have fast ball. Januzaj played well before fading but that's maybe a fitness thing? Mata looked like he was trying to respond from the Pedro pressure.

Smalling was a beast and Blind looked pretty comfortable. Plus we got some good minutes in for Hernandez.

My one bone of contention? No Herrera! And when will Schweinsteiger replace Carrick? It seems silly that the slow starter Carrick who gets better as the season goes on is playing from the start? And it's not helping Schneiderlin who looks better with Schweinsteiger. But shout out for a great pass for the first goal.

Last season we had a few foul ups with back passes to the keeper, it seems we are going to continue that this season.

Overall a better performance especially going forward. Depay was excellent. Rooney to me was better, still not at his best. Mata was okay. Aside from the first few minutes our defense did well again, unfortunate event not to keep a clean sheet.

Happy to see Hernandez get on the pitch, hope he stays and plays well for us.

Depay. Depay. Depay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3-1, should cruise in the next leg, maybe even get some youngsters a run out.

Very happy with the result

Keeper a little shitmypants unconvincing.

Back four brilliant, especially Smalling and Blind. Truly excellent.

Midfield ok. Carrick under par. Schweinsteiger didn't have same impact as previously.

Rooney improving but still a concern.

Mata good first half only.

Januzaj poor.

Memphis sensational.

Cheers:
  • #7
  • Fellaini super-sub
  • Smalling in Vidic-mode...err, I mean beast-mode
Jeers:
  • That last little bounce robbing Memphis of the hat-trick
  • Rooney's neck hair
  • Rooney

Anyone kind enough to post LVGs post match interview?

I would actually rest Morgan on Saturday, ready for Wednesday and play Bastian and Ander together or a midfield three with Morgan if he wants to carry on playing him. Carrick looks really out of sorts and is showing his age.

The problem with this match was it wasnt that the team was average.

Half of the team was fantastic, the other half horrible.

Smalling was a BEAST!!

Defense played okay... but honestly if Smalling doesn't win EVERY 1v1 battle we look mugs.

Memphis played very well but oh that sitter.

CM all controlled game. Honestly we look very solid there.

Rooney needs a rest.

Romero... what was he thinking when he got hurt :wenger:?

Grats to Fellaini :)!!

A bit premature Tadpole! I think Mata is dreadful in this position!

The game was very entertaining and while we have to keep in mind that Brugge are from a third tier league the positive tonight was the movement between the front 4, it felt so much freer than we have seen and as if LvG had loosened the leash and dropped the rigidity of the attack with the players interchanging positions when the move naturally progressed that way.

Obviously we should have pout the tie to bed with the chances we created and there were some moments of laxness at the back, but overall it was a fun watch and that'll do for me right now.

Memphis was fecking brilliant. Two wonderful goals and a great assist in the end. The third goal made me very happy, we'll surely be more relaxed in the return leg, although I'd have expected us to beat them in Belgium even with a 2-1 lead.

Rooney was better than his first two performances. We all know it takes him a bit more time to get in form, so he'll get there. A goal vs Newcastle is a very real possibility.

Romero was a bit shaky. I don't know why he was so slow to get to the ball when Schneiderlin passed it to him. We were lucky that the Brugges player fouled him or we'd have conceded.

The defence was once again solid. We didn't give much chances away, I don't think we conceded a clear cut chance all game. Sure, they had some fast, dangerous counter-attacks, but if it weren't for Carrick's sloppy own goal, it'd have been another clean sheet. Blind did well against Oulare's physicality in the end, it was good to see. Shaw, Darmian and especially Smalling were very good as well.

Carrick was poor for the second game in a row. He was slow as feck and sloppy in his passing, ''scored'' an own goal as well. Schweiny was better than him in the second half, we were a much more fluid team. Schneiderlin as defensively solid as always, but needs to work on his passing.

Januzaj was lively and showed some good technique. Mata didn't do much, as most of our more dangerous attacks were going through Memphis, who completely stole the show.

Overall a good, solid win. Bring on the weekend!

I'd agree... Herrera is fresh after not playing tonight and let's face it... It's Newcastle at home. We can't be too arrogant about it but we should be looking to take control and be positive.

Schweinsteiger could do with the hour or so from the start so yes come on LVG start on the front foot.

The movement was better, the team were more positive and Memphis looked a real threat. You can only beat what's in front of you and with a bit more killer instinct we'd have battered them. And that's the first time I think we've said that of this LVG team?

Happy for Memphis, but he had large periods in the second half where he wasn't great. Smalling head and shoulders MotM for me, superb performance. Schweinsteiger was fantastic also when he came on, ran the show.

Good performance. We clearly were determined to win big from the start as we were much more gung-ho than usual. Obviously though, that left us quite exposed.

The goal for them was a complete fluke and Smalling and Blind were both fantastic.

Memphis has finally been able to show what he is all about. Shame he spannered what would have been his hat-trick and what would have been the best goal we have scored in a very long time. But the two goals for incredible and that assist was just fantastic.

Even with all these great signings, Fellaini has has shown us that he is still one of our most effective players. He is probably one of the best target men in the world.

Happy with the result. We can go to Belgium relatively pressure free.

Memphis was on fire in the first half. Should have scored at least three, and that sitter he missed after the lovely backheel by Rooney...unnnnggggg. Absolutely relieved that we got the 3rd and a great sub bringing on the 'Fro to head that bad boy home.

We looked a bit out of sorts defensively at times and eventually Romero is going to cost us a goal or two with his suspect play. That said, Smalling has suddenly become an absolute rock. Every match we play he just seems to get better and better. Blind was solid, although I think I'm ready for Rojo or Jones to come back into the squad. Darmian and Shaw both looked sharp.

Carrick had a sub-par game compared to his usual standards, although I thought that maybe Romero should take a little of the flack for the own goal as he looked a bit slow to respond. BFS is a beast of a man, with legs like tree trunks. That said, he put in another good shift even though he still looks like he's not quite up to 100%. Schneiderlin is my first choice for midfield every match. We look like a completely different team in the middle of the pitch now that he's in our lineup.

Memphis was obviously MOTM but, I would like to see a little better judgement in the play-making dept as there were a few wasteful attempts here and there from him. Mata was a bit invisible at times but otherwise played a decent match. Januzaj was much improved in the 10 role tonight and was far less careless in possession. He's particularly good in the box creating space to cross the ball. Rooney looked much improved over the previous two games. He should have had at least 1 or 2 assists and he was well involved in our play. As long as he plays with desire and looks to get after it like he did tonight we'll be fine playing him up top.

Fellaini has a mighty boosh and he likes to head the ball off of it. Excellent substitution for the situation. Chicharito looked far better on the ball than I remembered before his loan. It was a nice play he made to beat their centerback to the ball on that redcard/2nd yellow.

So good to be playing in the Champions League again. I thought we were very lively and played a very good match overall. The offense showed signs of brilliance, capped by an excellent performance from the new No. 7 and, although we we're a bit shaky at the back in terms of a few positional mistakes and one errant own goal, I thought we did a fair job and we take a 2 goal difference into the away leg with a good shot to move into the group stage.

Oh that third goal. So important that.

Smalling, Memphis and Blind were great, Shaw as well if you let a few mistakes slide.

I think Januzaj was good but the final passes were really poor. Guess that will improve with experience.

Come on, we were a lot more quicker and had a lot more flair today.
Considering the fact that we played against Brugge who missed half of their first team, I expected more. Too often we needed too much time to bring the ball forward or even manage to pass it in the final 3rd

A good result.

But we struggled to break down a weakened Brugge most of the game and looked appalling when playing against 10 men.

I can't blame the players, but I do think this is LVGs game and I can't say I like it so far.

I also think the ref did us a massive favour in not blowing up when he looked like he was about to before changing his mind and allowing play to continue for our eventual 3rd.

There were bits of that but not so much as in last two games. As I said we looked a bit quicker and had a lot of one touch passes Brugge or not.

I'm not sure if we saw the same game. We broke down Brugge just were unlucky with the goals. We certainly werent appaling against 10 men. And I need to repeat that ref can allow play to continue if one team is in the attack.

I really enjoyed that. Highlights were Smalling, Shaw and Memphis with Darmian, Blind, Schneiderlin and Fellaini all doing well too. I though Januzaj started really well but not for the first time, when he doesn't get protection from referees early on he can fade out of games.

On the ref, he was a bit of a prat with his big smug head. There wasn't a bad tackle in the game and the yellow cards for Darmian and Smalling, as well as in particular the second yellow for their fella were just fussy and unnecessary. I wouldn't mind all his attitude if he hadn't got so many decisions wrong.

I thought Rooney was much improved from the weekends performance. He wasn't back to his best and I'd have loved a goal but he looked hungry, he moved well and he seems a lot closer to what we'd expect from him that in the first two games. That touch back to Memphis was sublime and that chance probably belongs on the thread for amazing "could have been" goals.

We'll progress now. Being 2 goals down they'll have to come at us next week and that will leave space behind. I'd fancy us to win the game and score more than once in Belgium.
