Yeah but how did he go in the match?
He came on for less than 10 minutes and scored. Also set up the cross for Memphis with some typically lovely chest control.

Can't really say much more or judge him on 9 minutes of football.

But huge contribution with the goal.

It's probably difficult for him to find a balance. He's obviously given license to find creative options, but at the same time I bet LvG has stressed the importance of those creative options being realistic as well. If he starts losing the ball more than he already does, I think he would be out of the team anyway.

Yep no doubt he's under instruction and having an immobile Rooney up front doesn't help him with his creative options either but essentially, as likeable as he is, he's not of the same creative quality as Hazard and Silva are for example.

Pedro arrives it's 4-3-3 and Mata is, once again, struggling to fit in.

I don't share the immense confidence in Smalling, I seem to be reading atm, (might be me not watching properly).

I thought he was majestic last night. Needs to keep his passing simple but other than that it was a Rools Royce performance.

Yeah, could well be me being a negative nelly over the passing. There was some great tackling and intercepting from all of the defence at various times. In patches, Brugge looked half decent going forward.

I'd like us to get the first goal in the 2nd leg and we'll be fine.

If Pedro arrives i would expect Mata to be our first choice second striker / 10. I think he gets played wide right as he's versatile enough to play there and a better option than anyone else. If Pedro resolves that issue he is free to play his best position.

I'd say that depends on what you mean with "creativity". If it's about seeing the right pass in the final third, then he is much more creative than Hazard, but if it's about being able to beat a man and create something alone, then he is obviously not very creative at all.

69% possession, 19 shots, 8 on target, 10 corners. We totally dominated that game and were unlucky to concede the own goal. Brugge only managed one shot the entire match.

We should have scored more considering the chances we created - Memphis put in two sensational goals but missed a few sitters. Smalling should have scored that header from a few yards out, too. Seemed like it was destined to end 2-1, which would have been an iffy score to take to Belgium, but we went for it. Great to see Louis push Chicarito and Fellaini up top in search for another goal. We were knocking on the door and deserved to get another in the dying seconds.

Haven't watched the highlights yet (not sure I even can without the paid-for BT Sport package, grrr) but it was a great performance to watch live in my opinion. Though, it's worth pointing out that not everybody agrees. There was a lot of dissatisfaction from other supporters in the east stand, and a lot of people frankly aren't happy with Van Gaal's keep-the-ball style of play. They're always shouting for us to go forward at every opportunity, and they naturally hate it when we pass it backwards, but I'm not so sure the gung-ho approach works in today's game. The best performance I've seen in many years was our win at Anfield last season - Liverpool hardly got the ball and didn't know what had hit them.

We're only three games and our first two wins were far from scintillating, but last night we showed real signs of progress. Memphis has arrived. Januzaj looks to be rediscovering some form. Shaw looks properly fit and ready to go. Schneiderlin's providing some steel to our centre. And Smalling is quite simply a beast.

Three games, three wins and the only person to put one past us is Carrick. I'll take that.

Tbh I sometimes had the feeling we had 90 %. Brugge has not been great at all. It would be embarrassing to stumble over them.

Yeh we dominated possession alright but we just looked a bit open when they did have it.

Both of you are correct. At times we just closed them around their box but at times their attackers seemed to find some joy in our third.
wired game

Overall LVG must be pretty pleased with that performance. The score really doesn't flatter us much given our dominance.

Although Memphis was brilliant on any other night he could and should of had more than 2 goals and one assist. But he showed from that left hand side the danger he will cause.

The defence was relatively untroubled. It's a shame that we conceded but hey these things happen and the goal actually wasn't a defenders fault.

I thought Schneiderlin was again industrious and put in a good shift but he and Carrick really don't seem to be a good pairing. They both want to sit and protect the back 4 and at times neither ends up doing so.

Rooney got another 80 minutes and although he wasn't brilliant he was better than against Villa so let's take the positive on that one. At least this time he created for Memphis and that deft back heel should have created the goal of the season so far.

Fellaini proved he can and will be an impact player this season while Hernandez showed some nice touches and looks a better all around player than before his loan.

I'd say this was another 7/10 performance. Room for improvement in our finishing but a decent result.

Just before Fellani came on, I was thinking "we REALLY need a target man"...

I guess we don't... the bog-brush will do for now.

It was a good result for us and in the end that is what matters most.

Memphis scored 2 great goals and we looked reasonably solid at the back.

The performance can improve, but it was the first time we played in Europe for a while so I think nerves were at play. We conceded a really crap goal, but it was good to see us respond with a goal almost immediately.

Let's not get too ahead of ourselves though, we need a result in Belgium to see off this tie.

What I love about this team is that they rise to the occasion. This was an important match and that showed.

This game this early gives me the feeling they will rise higher than previous season.

That Schweinsteiger is here gives me the hope they will play better at less important matches too. He is the kind of guy that doesn't accept anything below your best no matter what the occasion. To have him playing for us is just great.

Great season ahead!!

Enjoyable open game to watch, other than giving them a goal start, always in control, good performances by most of the players, Memphis and Smalling excellent, Blind and Shaw very good.
Starting to click and will improve more.
Unless some sort of disaster strikes in Bruges cannot see us not getting anything less than a draw

My local's dodgy satellite feed let me down so only saw the second half but quite happy with the intent shown. Still plenty of room for improvement but enough to feel good about. Still think it will be grind of a season but one very encouraging thing is I don't think it matters if we play Barcelona or Yoevil, we grind out results, generally.

Nice to see Memphis settling in.

Well, I actually really enjoyed watching one of our games, which makes a change. Though I am as a result slightly concerned about the second leg.

Depay - I've liked everything I've seen from him so far. He is direct and doesn't faff around going sideways or looking for pointless passes. As a result he can be frsutrating but he also scares the shite out of teams and gives our attack exactly what it has been missing (i.e. someone who actually attacks).

Carrick - In the same way good Carrick often slips under the radar because he's not as spactacular as a Paul Scholes, bad Carrick seems to slip under the radar due to not being as spectacularly bad as bad Wayne Rooney. He's yet to do anything remotely useful in 3 games and should stay on the bench.

Schneiderlin - I always thought at Southampton that he'd be the type of player we'd need, if only he was a bit better at being that type of player. I've seen the same thing thus far. Everything just isn't quite polished enough and there's the occasional erratic madman pass. It's not too different from what Herrera would probably be like if you gave him sedatives before the game.

Rooney - He was erm...less rubbish, I guess? Some of his passes went to people on his team and stuff, and he at least ran aorund a lot.

Smalling - I liked how he kept running over and destroying people and then walking off with the ball. Reminded me of Rio when he knew he had the opposition in his pocket. Really looks to have stepped up since that dumb red card at City.

Shaw - I like this new fastforward nutcase version of Luke Shaw a lot, though I can't imagine Van Gaal's philosophy involves his left fullback marrauding up the right wing taking on everyone in sight. I did like how he managed to create a chance for both teams in one go, by passing the opposition through on goal, then collecting his own pass back and running the full length of the pitch with it. This is what we need more of imo...utter terrifying lunacy.

Fellaini - Not encouraged be the resorting to hoofball tactics yet again. The goal at the end is how we should use him...stick him in the box and let him attack crosses. Not 10 yards outside the box failing to control hoofs.

Our attacking players, Memphis aside, really need to realise what it is they're actually in the team to do. It's not to prat around running sideways across the pitch then turning round and going back the other way. If it wasn't for Depay we'd have created roughly 0 chances last night and this place would currently be in a panic.

Haha ahh nvm I was trying to make a joke. But yeah he's goal is so good for us, pretty impressive to get a goal in less than 10 mins of football too

That Oulare guy who came in as a sub for Brugge was absolute dogshit, he got dispossessed at least 6-7 times by Smalling and Blind.

That's what I call entertaining football! Although we looked a bit open in the first half, whenever we had the ball in around the final third, we always looked threatening, especially with Memphis out wide. We moved the ball at a quicker speed, kept width, there was a lot more movement, created more chances, had more shot - the lot. We definitely should have had more, but thankfully we got that third goal late on, which hopefully should be enough to seal the tie.

Depay - I've liked everything I've seen from him so far.
He put one shot over the bar and misplaced two passes. Sell him immediately. Or at least the Bad Twin Memphis.

But if Bad Carrick is as bad as you say, should we not just try having one Carrick, and maybe even one Wayne Rooney.

Eh, quite.

Rooney - He was erm...less rubbish, I guess? Some of his passes went to people on his team and stuff, and he at least ran aorund a lot.
Quite which of the Rooney's are we discussing here?
Smalling - I liked how he kept running over and destroying people and then walking off with the ball. Reminded me of Rio when he knew he had the opposition in his pocket. Really looks to have stepped up since that dumb red card at City.
DC or Marvel? I like the new Smalling too.

Was the old Shaw not fairly nutty already?
Fellaini - Not encouraged be the resorting to hoofball tactics yet again. The goal at the end is how we should use him...stick him in the box and let him attack crosses. Not 10 yards outside the box failing to control hoofs.
I have to admit to a bit of confusion here. The last goal involved Fellaini recieving the ball from the full back forty yards from goal, slotting it sideways to Schweinsteiger, who gives to further left to Memphis. Fellainis run is perfectly timed to meet a pinpoint cross from Depay and bury it. In what way is that sticking him in the box? What hoof-ball are you talking about? (But at least there seems only to be one Fellaini running around OT, which is something of a relief).

(Sounds of strange machines and clicking noises inside head). Mm. Do you ever listen to the shipping forecast late at night? Fascinating list of obscure place names to be heard...

That is what I like with MD, not only did he score the 2 goals, he was a goalscoring threat. Look at guys like sanchez and hazard, players we have been crying out for, they have missed chances in the past, but they are showing the side that they are a constant threat, if he was not really in those positions to make those chances for himself, I would be worries. But the fact he scored and was in those positions to miss those chances shows, he has that ability to score goals in double figures

You are trying way too hard to be a smart arse there. I genuinely have no idea which bits are sarcasm...all of it?

What's your point RE: Fellaini?...because he had to run to the ball to head it? I am aware of this. He is very good at attacking crosses. He isn't good at hold up play or as some kind of totem pole hoof facilitator however. We have seen this evidenced many times last season. We don't need to learn it all over again this.

We'll score in Belgium, especially as they'll need to go 2-0 up to be able to shut up shop. Hopefully they'll be this open again and we get a few on the counter.

No insult intended. It's interesting that you have doppelgangers of well-established United names, but there is only one of the new signings. I, like the United oldies, am a bit divided too; as to whether to discuss the niceties of the match (I just found a video of the full match, you see a lot more stuff on a second look in the cold light of day), or to just enjoy (and mildly tease) your surrealist (double) visions.

Strange that considering Mata has around the same number of assists as them since they've been in the league.

I don't share the immense confidence in Smalling

He's been MOTM in every game this season (I'd say co-MOTM with Memphis last night).

I thought he might become a solid defender in the league once he reached his potential but, in the last few matches at least, he's played the best he ever has here and not only that, he's played as well as a central defender has since Rio and Vidic were in their prime, and that's not an exaggeration.

He's been superb in both league matches and last night he completely dominated. I lost track of the amount of times he muscled the opposition off the ball. He's looked like a man amongst boys at times and he's become an obvious leader on the field.

I give some credit to Blind for being able to step in and put in some solid efforts in the back paired up with him but I can't help but think that Smalling is the player that's anchoring down our defense.

That said, I also think that having a proper set of midfielders in the middle of the pitch is allowing Smalling the comfort to play with a little more abandon and not have to worry about getting skint if he pursues the play a little further than he normally would.

Thought it was a great game, interesting to watch, prob a bit more open than LVG would have wanted, sloppy from Carrick and poor preparation for that freekick in general for their goal.

Lots of pro's though - Memphis obviously, Januzaj relatively lively, Darmian looked solid. Smalling I thought was brilliant really commanding few times just eased their players off the ball no trouble.

My only con, is Carrick and Schneiderlin are they too similar? They seem very similar in styles, interceptions and position on the pitch. Its not really a con as they are both doing well. Obviously the push for Herrera to play is out there and it would give us that forward influence from CM, I also think Schweinsteiger could easily play slightly more attacking too.

The one we were supposedly interested in? Just shows that we really shouldn't believe everything we read, but we still do.

I would be happy with Schmidfield and Herrera with just 3 up front, 2 wide men and Rooney. Ander linking the two areas. Unfortunately with Rooney not looking like scoring he has to have a 2nd striker there. Who tbh isn't looking prolific either. I hope he keep Memphis out wide, he looks really dangerous out there. If Rooney doesn't get his scoring boots on drop him. Show some balls LvG.

I thought we were great, Brugge only had one shot! Their goal was terribly unlucky and we could have scored five or six on a good day.

Positives:

-Fast, attacking football
-That counter attack which Memphis should have buried was vintage United
-Memphis
-Shaw was a beast, Darmian solid a ever
-Blind and Smalling were great
-Morgan and Schweinsteiger were very good, controlled the game
-Januzaj looked more confident, and moved the ball nicely

Negatives:
-Carrick, looked lost, but fair enough, he's been so good and that was his worst game in a long time, maybe the own goal unsettled him
-Mata, looked okay, great movement as always, but needs to play centrally
-Romero, we need a first choice keeper
-Rooney, better today, but still too slow, too deep and just doesn't look threatening

Bring on Newcastle, hopefully with Pedro
Amazing what one day can do...

So it’s about 12 noon (PST) here and I’m at work but the game is being recorded so I’m not worried. During the day I go to great lengths to avoid social media and anything that might spoil the result for me. Work is dragging by, all I can think of is United playing in the CL. I look down to see my phone has an alert; guess what I forgot to do? That’s right, I didn’t turn off the score updates from my ESPN app. I glance at the alert without thinking and it dawns on me what the alert is. I quickly try to avert my gaze from my phone, too late, Michael Carrick has scored in the 8th minute! To those watching me it probably seems as if I am having a fit, I lift my head quickly to the sky with my eyes closed while curses stream from my mouth. I wanted everything to be unknown so I could watch the game as if it were live!

So now I’m at work and I know that we are up 1-0 early on, I keep seeing alerts pop up but I don’t read them as I slog through the rest of my day. I lighten my mood by telling myself “hey at least we got an early goal, I wasn’t really worried but that is a great sign!” My mood has improved as I head home from work, I’m humming the CL theme song as I drive home. I get home around 4pm but I have decided to wait to watch the game until my missus, whom is pregnant, is off to work around 7pm (wanted quiet and didn’t want to have anything to worry about as I watched). I make a beautiful but simple dinner; Stealhead Trout and a baked potato with some cheap beer. This is the moment I have been waiting for all day! So here I am eating this beautiful meal, a little drunk, and extremely excited to be watching United in the CL, what a wonderful moment! Fast forward to the 7th minute, I begin to wonder how Carrick is going to score his goal, “maybe it will be a wonder-strike from 35 out or maybe a header at the back post from a corner.” Who gives a feck, it could be an ugly deflection and I would still be happy!Brugge win a free-kick, I’m thinking “hmmm the goal must be coming soon, maybe a counter attack from this free-kick…” The ball is hit in with some pace, Carrick attempts to block it (at this point I have a mouthful of fish) but deflects it into the United goal. I begin to choke and simultaneously laugh hysterically. My reality has been shattered, I have spent the last ~7 hours believing United would jump out to an early lead. I sit and laugh maniacally, my brain cannot process the surprise I have experienced.

Anyway here’s my take on the game:

Overall very happy with the performance, looked solid in defense again and the attack was very good today. We dominated Brugge. Some will point out that Brugge aren’t that great a side but we can only beat what is put in front of us and we did so comprehensively. This game showed what we can do to a side that doesn’t just sit back and defend against us, if the opponents attack we will create chances.

Starters

Romero - Couple of shaky moments but mostly solid, not much to do. Still settling in so the shaky moments aren’t unexpected.

Darmian – How lucky are we? This guy is slotting right in and his prime is still ahead of him.

Smalling – Great display, finally looking like he is fulfilling the potential that many of us saw. If he keeps this form up he will be one of the best, if not the best, defenders in the league.

Blind – Very good game, confident on the ball and gives us confidence as a team. So intelligent and reads the game extremely well. Really growing fond of him as our first choice LCB.

Shaw – Terrific performance, fecking rapid. Didn’t do much wrong.

Carrick – Not so great today but we know he starts slow and we also know he is class. He will get better as the season progresses.

Schneiderlin – Did very well breaking up play and making tackles. Just okay going forward BUT he is here for his defensive abilities more than anything, so I would rate it as a very good performance from him.

Junuzaj – Decent performance, not great but the talent is there. Showed glimpses of brilliance and I hope he continues to build upon this.

Memphis – Amazing! Should have had 3-4 goals but the fact that he was even in the position to score 3-4 and did put away 2 is terrific, just improve the conversion rate a little. Also chipped in with a great assist and looked dangerous all game.

Mata – Decent game, drifted in and out but wasn’t bad by any means. We keep him around because he is always capable of popping up with a moment of brilliance but still executes his role in the team excellently.

Rooney – Not firing on all cylinders still but getting better, should have had an assist or two. That flick to Memphis is a good sign and you could tell he is hungry. Not a bad performance overall but I expect better and I think he will meet those expectations soon enough.

Subs

Schweinsteiger – Not a great performance from him, he looked a bit off the pace to me but still had moments of class. Think it comes down to fitness and the fact that he is still settling in. I have no doubt that he will produce mostly class performances for us but he just needs a little time.

Fellaini – Considering the amount of time he was on I would say it was an excellent performance from him. Came in, looked dangerous, and scored a big one in injury time. Not much else could be asked of him.

Chicharito – Looked decent, not much to judge on and didn’t do anything spectacular or terrible. Solid performance despite very little time.
