CL W Champions League Play-off Round, 1st Leg

Manchester United 3:1 Club Brugge

Post-match discussion

Tue, 18 August 2015

Anyway greetings fellow United fans, we shared a satisfying evening (for most of us), hopefully the second leg goes OK. I even forgive the moaners; I started rebuttals/answers to points, and then went (sigh), why bother? Let's celebrate. Three games so far, three wins.

Nah, chance creation nwas there, just finishing and final touch was poor. Smalling, Depay an Schweinsteiger all had chances well inside the penalty box that they should've finished. Depay shouldve shot instead of squaring in the first half too and an in form Rooney shouldve finished his header in the first half. What game were you watching?
Not the same game I was watching.

Our overall attacking play was class, as you said we just lacked the final touch/ball at times. The only slight qualm I had was at times during the first half we were a bit light in midfield but the defence was solid so it didn't matter. We were going for it today and the stats prove that.

Nah you can't fault that performance. Some wasted chances but overall our attacking and defending was class, we passed the ball really well and the tempo of the second half was amazing.

Give me that performance every week and i'll be very content with where we're going under LVG.

you underestimate the moaniness of the caf:lol:

Me too. Delighted with this game and result. I missed these kind of nights.
It was just fun! Other than that quick run last March/April I haven't enjoyed a United game that much in years. Appreciate that sounds dramatic but really.

I'm not sure what do you mean?

Schweinsteiger comes into the field has 3 very dodgy passes right off the bat. Whenever he got the ball he kept doubting, gave weird crosses into the stands and even almost gave an assist to a brugge player with a very weird back pass to Romero.

Rooney had an identical performance to his last few matches. Useless as a striker, always out of position bad touches, no chance creation, ruins a lot of attacks.

Mata being the best of the bad, just didnt contribute much. Also had some very dodgy passes including a backpass early in the game where the defense got in trouble and just a lot of possession loss without creating anything.

I dont know which match you have been watching but if this is what you find acceptable at Man United then dont think we will ever hold silverware again.

I can say the same thing. Especially the Schweini part is wierd.
Whatever man, enjoy your negativity.

1. What supporters find or dont find acceptable doesn't have any impact on silverware or otherwise.
2. Bastian played excellently, with intelligence and vision. Superb player.
3. Mata fought hard, and contributed well to a lot of excellent link up play.
4. WR enjoyed himself out there. Some great placed passes, nearly the goal of the season with the backflick. Still not at his best, to be fair, but none of his performances have been 'identical'. LVG believes in him, and he remains a vital part of the team.
5. Being miserable and super judgemental isnt even cool anymore, @Rezyuz. Try enjoying yourself and loosen up a little.

EDIT: Sorry I spelled your name wrong, mate.

Fellaini's voice always catches me off guard.

wayne rooney was pants but aside form that I really do think you watched the wrong game.

Definitely a good performance today. Still someway to go, but we controlled the game and looked far more creative than against Villa. People might say that it is only Brugge but no team in the Champions League should be taken lightly. Other than their freak goal, they didn't do much damage and if we showed a little more composure around their box we would have got 4 or 5 goals.

Memphis played a great as did Schneiderlin and Smalling. Cracking goals from Memphis too!! Good lead to take into the second leg and should be confident of going through if all goes well.

Better but far from a great performance. Happy with the scoreline and we should be fine going to Belgium and closing them out.

Hard not to give MotM to Memphis with 2 goals and an assist with plenty of endeavor.

However, for me, my MotM is Smalling. Absolutely bossed it tonight.

Overall, defense was a little shaky at times, but still looked good.

Carrick looked pretty rusty again, and that was before he scored for them on a ball that he might have simply been able to trap and carry forward. Morgan was solid if not spectacular. Still needs to work on his forward dribbling and passing.

BFS was good again, though not at his peak by any means. Still want to see more from him. I reckon with Carrick looking bad from game to game it is just a matter of time before BFS will start and Carrick will rotate.

Thought Mata had flashes of brilliance but again he is mostly out of the game. He doesn't defend well or work particularly hard and most times the ball comes to his feet the play slows down. Not good enough for me.

Adnan was solid but also wasteful at times. His decision making is not good enough.

Rooney was better than first two BPL games but I still think he is a weak spot in our team. He just isn't the same player and doesn't have the guile to change his style. We need a young, fresh and fast forward that can actually play the game. I was happy to see that LVG had the balls to bench him tonight. I really hope we still sign a proper forward before the transfer window closes.

I thought we were great, Brugge only had one shot! Their goal was terribly unlucky and we could have scored five or six on a good day.

Positives:

-Fast, attacking football
-That counter attack which Memphis should have buried was vintage United
-Memphis
-Shaw was a beast, Darmian solid a ever
-Blind and Smalling were great
-Morgan and Schweinsteiger were very good, controlled the game
-Januzaj looked more confident, and moved the ball nicely

Negatives:
-Carrick, looked lost, but fair enough, he's been so good and that was his worst game in a long time, maybe the own goal unsettled him
-Mata, looked okay, great movement as always, but needs to play centrally
-Romero, we need a first choice keeper
-Rooney, better today, but still too slow, too deep and just doesn't look threatening

Bring on Newcastle, hopefully with Pedro

I thought he was poor tonight, some very loose passing. Having said that I think the Januzaj criticism is harsh and he wasn't as bad as some are saying. Different perspectives I suppose.

I thought Bastian was fine, showed his quality in some tight situations too.

Felt satisfied on the drive home from Old Trafford tonight, which is the first time since probably the City game last season. Was really happy with the attacking nature of our game - a lot of possession for sure but it seemed meaningful tonight and not just for the sake of it. My notable points:

Code:
-Depay - Two cracking goals. High work rate and some great dribbles.

-Januzaj seems really up for it - he just needs to keep the effort up for more than 40 minutes or so (the same occurred in the win at Villa)

-Chicharito getting a great reception - really seemed to lift him and he played well for the time he was on... would like to see him get a few more minutes agains Newcastle on Saturday.

-Smalling looks like a World Class centre back recently, he has really gone up a level - I hope he can keep it up. Same goes with Blind.

-Our full backs, Shaw & Darmian look as though they've played for United for years. Great performances for both on the attacking and defensive front, and I hope they keep their form up.

-Rooney was miles better tonight than he was on Friday against Villa, although he's still not quite where he should be at - I hope he can put that right against Newcastle.

-Fellaini scoring that third goal was absolutely crucial for me. I was incredibly nervous thinking of going into that second leg 1 goal up but an away goal down. Should relieve some of the pressure and allow our players to play their game in Brugge. Good to see the big man back despite him being banned on Saturday.

All in all, I'm happy. A freak goal conceded but a positive performance to build on and take confidence from. Can only be a good thing. Roll on Saturday!

Would have liked to seen your reaction when that backpass from Mata, Schweinsteiger or Romero's nap time caused a goal that would have ditched us out of the CL.

And for Wayne, im glad he enjoyed himself out there. I can assure you the majority of the the viewers unfortunately didn't. And neither did LVG else he wouldn't sub his captain off.

Im not being miserable and super judgemental, these lads are getting paid 100-300k a week to perform and they don't.

You should listen to the opinion of neutral fans and media after the matches, its a lot less biased then our own memories as man utd fans.

This is genuinely the most ridiculous post i have ever read on here. kudos.

I don't normally engage in discussion with the kinds of posts you are making. Thanks for replying and have a nice evening. Keep listening to the 'neutral fans', there lies the kingdom of heaven.

Neutral fans do not let their judgment be guided by love for a player.

And with neutral fans i also mean analysts. But incase you are wondering who also mentioned those players underperforming and rooney in particular, that would be Ruud Gullit and Ronald De Boer.

watched the match with a spurs fan, told me that we were good and that we needed to bring this form to our prem games.

he did slag off romero though.

Smalling for me. I have to turn down the trebble listening to his squeaky voice.... Then little Adnan sounds like Zlatan  so strange
Schweinsteiger's is surprisingly easy on the ear. If there was ever anyone who's perfectly matched their character it's Mata's!

Tonight gave me great hope: This squad and system of play has the makings of a terrific side and offers the promise of many more exciting nights to come.

Reminded me of a typical United home European performance circa 2000-2005.

Feck it, playing a European team and midweek football, an exciting win with our hopeful next superstar announcing himself, new signings showing their class, players returning from the wilderness of loans or suspensions with great cameos, a Fergie time goal, it's great! Absolutely buzzing, still stuff to work on but we've had 2 dull seasons lets feckin enjoy tonight for what it is.

One last word, is there a gif yet of Blind horsing that massive black guy off the ball in the second half? @GifLord
