Post-match discussion

And people still think Onana is the GK we need. Get rid of him in summer ffs . There's a few that can feck off. And if anybody thinks next season will get better it won't unless 2 top quality strikers are bought.

Embarrassing that this is the effort after the club loses a legend. I bet more than half the squad don’t even know who Dennis Law was. I have never hated a United team as much as this one, I do wish sometimes that our supporters would stop being so fair to the players, they don’t deserve it.

This isn’t difficult to analyse.

We gave the old manager £200m or whatever to spend in the summer totalling £600m over 5 windows, then we bring in a new manager on the basis of his style and his philosophy and expect him to get a tune out of the same players who were purchased for an entirely different approach?

We lack so much in basic stamina, we barely have any players with the ability to shift through the gears and don’t get me started on how lightweight they are under pressure.

The formation is a problem because the players are incapable of getting the best out of it because of their physical limitations in addition to their general brain issues.

Nothing changes here until another few rounds of recruitment allow Amorim access to better athletes. His Sporting team was littered with tireless runners as a starting point, and we really do not have that simple basic building block to start from.

12 years of waste and criminal-level planning. It’s a rotten organisation fronted by a new executive team who also give the impression that they don’t really know what they’re doing sadly.

If we can perform against the big teams then we need to start treating all of these games like the opposition is better than us. Shouldn't be too hard.

Had the same feeling as before Newcastle, they're too well trained, they are a team, and they have better recruitment. I think this team can't even finish in the top half of the table, and a losing streak and thus relegation battle is also a possibility.

That was sad. More evidence that if Bruno is not good, United are not good. I fear with all the minutes Bruno is playing his legs will be rubber and be mediocre for most of the rest of the season.

Did Garnacho do anything positive as a sub?

Might be time to start Collyer and move Mainoo to AM and keep Amad as RWB.

Imagine if a dynamic LWB got the ball in those positions instead of Dalot. Please buy or loan a LWB NOW!

The death of a former legend isn't going to make a shit bunch of players better though.

They have been like this for 11 years now.

Maybe we won't get relegated this season, no thanks to us. It might not be1973-74 all over again but I can tell you as someone who was there and hardly missed a game, home or away, this is beginning to feel uncannily like 1972-73. A poor squad of players and a misplaced sense of entitlement that "We're Man Utd, we're too good to go down."

At the end of that horrible season everyone breathed a sigh of relief. "We nearly got relegated but in the end it all worked out OK. We'll be much better next season"....yeah, right.

Any post match interview footage with the manager? Really interested in what he has to say about that.

Mazraoui and Onana lost us the game. Terrible defending
The second was a ball Onana had to come for and the third is him having a brain dead moment because he missed the second. There was no need for that.

You can’t make 2 goalkeeping errors against Brighton when the game is 1-1.

Just poor.

Look, Premier League season 2024/25 is absolutely done for us. A European spot is a distant dream and we just need to make sure that 1) we're not going down and 2) we must not be on the receiving end of a cricket score when playing our traditional rivals.

Cup competitions are a different story. With a bit of luck we can go very far and who knows what can happen.

I’m dreading Thursday night, Rangers will absolutely tear in to us, they will run us off the pitch.

I would dare anyone to suggest a manager who could get a tune out of these players as they look they don't give a feck or the feck they give is way below United standards.
I would think almost any manager in this league would get some tune out of them. We are playing badly as a team because it appears it doesn’t matter what a player is good at or where they are comfortable, Amorim is playing his system. A pragmatic manager would have them playing a style that doesn’t get us hammered 1-3, even if it was not pleasing to the eye. Amorim-ball is also not pleasant to watch, so I’d take the same ugly football with wins.

If they don’t release a raft of players and bring in 3 this window, this system will not work. These players can’t do it.

Does anyone serious think Onana is good enough? I have never seen him distribute the ball after he catch it for counterattack opportunity. Some day, he could be world class but most days he is not. United needs a sugar daddy to get out of this slump. Onana, Rashford, Antony, Mount, Casemiro, Hoijund and many others just need to leave. I would only keep just a handful. I don't know what Mainoo offers in the field. Garnacho should be sold for both parties.

How was Minteh not sent off. Also a neck grab on Garnacho? Another awful refereeing performance that should not be left to slide but will

They have been like this for 11 years now.
Maybe showing effort then? TBH I’d take the lofty heights of being 5th under Van Gaal or 6th under Ole. We have never been so bad.

Depressing result, Brighton were average but that's all you need to be sometimes against us,we'll always find a way to lose.
Just gotta suck it up sadly it's gonna be a bumpy ride between now and May.

12 years ago we had Robin Van Persie and Wayne Rooney as our attacking options.

Now we have Zirkzee and Rasmus.

That is what has hapenned to our club and our squad since Sir Alex left. And you could repat that for every position on the pitch. We have been in adeliberate managed decline, with players being worse than those they replace, despite spending more money than a US superpac.

You mean like Ole, or EtH got a tune out of them too? And as he should as that is what he was brought in to do. Otherwise why hire him? EtH was hired to play his system and that was swiftly abandoned as the players were inept, only to buy more of the same.

And who is this pragmatic manager that could polish turds? Ugly football? You do realise it takes players who are to play at this level to even churn out a performance, half this squad is incapable of doing that no matter the system, formation or manager as proven over the last 5 years.

I agree with your last statement though, Amorim should be back to at least see what is possible with the right players for this system and formation.

Awful performance yet again, we are getting worse by the game and I cant see Rangers having any problem beating us on Thursday or Fulham on Sunday.

Difficult to find a single positive from that. Awful defensively and no threat going forward whatsoever, 1 shot on target all game.

Onana. The thing is - and this has been evident since he arrived - he is very keen to get his legs high off the ground when diving. This will not do; he should be concentrating on footwork, not flying. It is basic stuff. Either he is overly committed to an athletic/gymnastic approach, or it's for the cameras. His mind isn't right.

No, you mistake me. An analogy: Amorim is leading a band, he wants a guitar solo but all he has is a tuba. So he hands the tuba player a guitar and says have at it. A pragmatic manager would know Dalot and Mazraoui are never going to work as wingbacks, so playing a wingback-reliant system is foolhardy at best, and fecking madness at worst. We also have an attacker shoehorned into a CF role and he can’t do it. Yet we persist.

We had only one shot on target, all game and that was the penalty.

Brighton, 3 shots on target = 3 goals !

xG from open play...

Man Utd 0.5
Brighton 1.98

I think if any of the other PL managers were given the United job and the mission brief to stanch the bleeding, just win matches, any of them would find a style/approach that suits the players at their disposal. Our players haven’t suddenly forgotten how to play football (except for Onana) and they aren’t fat slugs who can’t run; all of them are top athletes in a competitive league but are being made to look like Phil from Accounting is getting a run in the team. If the brief was to finish 10th at minimum, style points and future systems woul be jettisoned for a basic approach that used these players effectively.

Deservedly beaten by a good side. That’s three wins on the bounce at OT for Brighton. Yes, Brighton. Onana is capable of great saves, but is equally capable of terrible errors far too often. He makes me very nervous. We need an upgrade, he just isn’t a regular United keeper, IMHO.

Way more disappointing than the actual scoreline was that not even for a moment I felt that the result was ever in question. Such a very bleak showing from almost everyone in the squad.

This can easily become the worst post-Fergie season. What is alarming is the amount of money spent over the years and the squad looks worse and worse. This is not a rebuild this is a decline. Someone stop the count!

He plays like a keeper who developed his style and technique on his own, maybe down at the park, maybe in the street, but has never been drilled on goalkeeping fundamentals. So he’s kind of a wildcard, and occasionally comes up with some unorthodox moments that fit into a highlight reel, but more frequently he is beaten by simple things because his overall technique is poor.

Yeah. We don't even have a system.

We've brought in a 343 coach but haven't changed anything else about the club at other levels to try and support the supposed shift.

I know for a fact that Barcelona play the same system at every level. That's what happens when your club has an identity and you expect your academy to produce talent to try and feed your first XI.

What are we actually doing? Where's the mythical 'game model' that was such a topic of discussion last season?
I think we do at 1st team, that was lacking with Erik, but you're right. It doesn't flow all the way through, when you look at Garnacho, he is a product of the old system and sticks out like a sore thumb now. Before he was the great hope.

It's still very unclear on the overarching plan, but hey well just have to wait and see on that one sadly.

Well my last post was one of full support for Amorim, and that does remain the case, but that was truly awful again today. Have to be honest, I left when the third goal went in, but so did thousands of others.

No movement, horrible system, no pace, no quality. They were a far better team, with far better players.

Hang the Glazers and Woodward. Make ETH watch.

I have mentally written off yet another season. Amorim is clearly not a magician and isn't going to get much of a tune out of this squad.
He is going to need some help to turn things round.

To be fair to him, these are not good enough to sustain any level of form or results.
We are too easy to score against.
We are too easy to beat.
And we have almost zero goal threat.
So what can anyone expect.

Unpopular opinion: it wasn't anything vintage but I genuinely thought we did just about enough to get something out that game on any other day. We weren't terrible or anything. Some of our players just ran out of petrol around the 60th-minute mark and Onana's double clanger ultimately killed us.
We had no shot on target bar the penalty
