Manchester United 1:3 Brighton & Hove Albion

Post-match discussion

We have spent 110m on two strikers who are worse than Welbeck.
Pretty much.
Estupinian, their keeper, Pedro, Minteh, Mitoma, Welbeck all start for us. Baleba is in with a shout too. They probably make half of what our players do too.
Years of mismanagement has led us to this.

I don't think we need to overcomplicate this.
Yes we are underperforming but Brighton have about 6 players that would start for us, including Welbeck.
Until that changes, we aren't going anywhere.

It's not just Brighton either. Most teams we play in the Prem have at least 5 players that would start for us... I mean their goalkeeper and centre forward are always a guaranteed two.

Sickening result. It's genuinely hard to have any hope when you see a performance like that at home.

Brighton dick us every time I swear. Even when we do get a result it's lucky as feck (Penalties, penalty kick after fulltime)
It's like revenge for the 4 nil trashing we have them in the FA Cup final 42 years ago. The one they should have won first time out.

I’ll never forget that - our fanzine was called “And Smith must score” for years after that 1st game. I still can’t believe that Bailey saved it!

After seeing how bad we were midweek, I lumped money on Brighton as it was obvious what was going to happen sadly.

Only surprise was that Welbeck didn’t score.

Bleak.

The referee was a Scouser, Peter Bankes. Yes, we were dreadful again today, but a red card in the first half would have changed the game. The ref didn't even give us a free kick for that! And the VAR was Craig Pawson, another shocking referee.

And the w*nker thought long and hard about giving us our penalty

The ref gave us a PK and disallowed their goal. We can’t blame today’s horrible performance on the refs.

Brighton manager said “ we knew how Manchester United were going to play and prepared for it”.
Why do we make it so easy for every team to beat us ?

Unfortunately yes.
We always seem a level below technically and more worryingly physically. Even Southampton have a few players that would start for us. We'd be smart, for example, to look at Dibling. He's nowhere near the finished product but he has a good technical base and an impressive physique. We only have Amad and Mainoo who are technically strong.

What a shit performance, we had one shot on target imagine. Just a very poor side we are. Tbf Brighton have better players than our team and it shows, I would take Mintah, Mitoma, Baleba, Joa Pedro in a heartbeat. Would be very happy to let go Garnacho, it would be stupid not to take 50M if offered for him. We would signings now!! Atleast one winger on the other side to add threat to our attack alongside Amad and one Left Wingback is a must.
But that would do us no good, because it is very very hard to learn a new system.

Amorim is right, this team is not athletic. Just look at Brighton, pacy and strong in midfield and attack. United on the hand isn't. Whoever scout for Brighton, we should immediately hire them. Despite a selling club, Brighton continues to bring good young players into the squad unlike us where we got a few oldies to fall upon. United is unlikely to compete in the next 3 years no matter who is the coach. We are in for a rough ride for the next 3 years.

I’d say 3 of their bench players today would start for us in Lamptey, March and Adingra

Every team knows how the other team will play; they have hours of video analysis to show everything in minute detail. Do you think anyone is surprised by City's overall approach anymore? So this is nothing special.

Only United can put on a world class performance and beat title chasing Arsenal at their own turf only to be completely outplayed 6 days later by thrash teams like Brighton in our own turf.

You can’t play this system without quality wing backs and double 10’s
Been saying this for an age. We have one player at the club who can consistently put in a 7 out of ten or better performance in one of these positions.

In just attacking terms the rest are averaging 3s I reckon (maybe Bruno slightly better) Name a club in the Premier league where two of their players wouldn't walk straight into these positions.

Pretty sure teams already took some of Brighton's backroom staff and they replaced them. Chelsea took Brighton's recruitment head, and 7 staff left with De Zerbi last May.

They're just a well run club that has the next batch ready to come in

The combined outlay of 270m on Antony, Mount, Casemiro and Hojlund. Wow, that will set us back years to say the least. I hear commentators going on and on about effort & desire. While that's all great to hear, it's not just that. There is a clear gulf in talent between us and most Premier league teams. Every team has 2-3 players who look like they can walk into our squad, no questions asked.

£600 million spent under ETH

We've been a joke in the transfer market for the last 10 years

We couldn't score, apart from a pk, or even get a shot on (or off) goal as far as I can remember, and our keeper is ludicrously poor. There's lots of competition for the honour, but this may have been our worst performance of the season.

We are quite shite at the moment but one thing that irks me most is the officiating or rather the consistency of it. Garnacho got grabbed by neck by a Brighton player and didn't even get a yellow.

Rodri, Casemiro all got straight reds for similar transgressions.

Boils my piss

Wouldnt go that far, and we 'actually drew' the game.

Only Amad was a threat, he was the one that won the goal that leads to a penalty. Garnacho was ineffective, Dalot was put a clear at twice and he run into the defenders each time. Our set pieces suck big time. To be clear, Amorim will need to renew his contract before this team start performing. Southampton was a lucky win, we came crashing down with a routine win by Brighton. Brighton would love to play us every week, that's how bad this team in. I cannot understand how Brighton can dominated possession from the kick off until they score their first goal. We are at Old Trafford and these players allow a visiting to dominate when the first whistle is blown. Seriously unmotivated team.

Yes, I agree. The refereeing seems worse these days vs before. I also think the ref was trying hard not to give us the penalty but realized he had no choice.

He has to go more attack minded in the wing backs spots with amad and garnacho….

Nothing against Bruno as a player generally, but he's a problem in this system. We will never get better with him. If we are going to back Ruben then we need players that can execute for him in this system. Some will say that's a bad idea but if we don't give him what he needs we will fail. We can't accommodate anyone anymore. We need specialists and system players otherwise Ruben is sacked by October. That's the sad reality.
I have been reading comments on this site for many years but have never contributed. However, I have been a United fan for 45 years and yes this is the worst team I have seen in that time. I agree and have for a couple of years that Bruno is a major factor in the decline of this team. Although he does make some brilliant passes he also snivels and complains non stop and is constantly on other players cases. On top of that his positional discipline is very poor although the last few games he has been a little better. He upsets the balance in the team which causes other players to cover him and players/spaces he should be marking. It is clear the young players don't like being around him because he is on their case constantly. Time to turn the page and find a new leader, one that provides positive leadership but will still let someone know when they are not pulling their weight.

Could have just used that feck you money we had and gotten in an experienced DOF to run the operation while he looked after the commercial side.
Instead he played real life FM, wasting over a billion pounds on mercenaries and outright shite.
He has set this club back decades and every single day I think about it it pisses me off.
ETH gets a lot of justified criticism but Woodward is a terrorist equivalent of a football CEO. Couldn’t criticize him enough.

Ref wasn’t very helpful in this game, think we had another pen he missed, then there’s this tackle, which is 2 footed and dangerous.
Poor performance by the players, but our pens have to be an assignation attempts and our players get cards for anything, the our opponents get away with some shockers.

People here are asking why is there no intensity? I've already said this before - fatigue is a major factor. 3 games in 7 days, where one of which was played with 10 men in a match that went to extra time, takes a huge toll in recovery and game focus. I already knew the Brighton game was going to be a more difficult one than Southampton simply because of the shorter rest period for players who already pretty exhausted. I was hoping we would win but that didn't happen. Brighton and Southampton were not hampered by the same issues and thus a lot fresher. I've noticed that some people are very dismissive when it comes to fatigue and recovery as a factor because the need to blame is very soothing and cathartic. Fatigue is a reality which we cannot deny. I'm not saying that there is no blame to allocate but temper that with these relevant factors.

This is not an excuse, but a factor used as context. Perhaps they should have done more to mitigate the situation with the fatigue and help with recovery time. There are definitely other issues here that resulted in the loss. However, I just feel this context is needed to be considered if people are going to wantonly hurl insults at the players, the manager and the system. The system works - it has been shown to be a positive aspect especially recently when the players were fresh, and it did show they were getting used to it pretty well. Perhaps fitness is an element that they need to look into further. We have had a setback and most here are already doom mongering to the extreme and slapping blame on everything. Were people expecting us to win every single game since the Arsenal one? Are we going to implode any time that happens? We've had setbacks and losses before, even during SAFs era and we've overcome. This not going back to the drawing board situation. This is just one game. This week was an anomaly in terms of the number of games in a week, reduced men in extra time, and shorter rest periods. Let's see what a regular week holds in the future and how the players respond where we can assess better and if the players really need to take accountability for anything. For now, I think and hope they will do better from this point on.

The only thing saving us from a relegation fight is that, unbelievably, there's 3 shitter teams than us in the league. Wolves losing tonight will mean no harm done and no closer to the drop zone ;-)

The ref was terrible. He even hesitated on the penalty. Trying to find any excuse not to give it. And then reluctantly pointed to the spot. ABUs all of them.
