PL L FA Premier League

Manchester United 1:3 Brighton & Hove Albion

Post-match discussion

After Soton I said we can lost to any team at any time. Unfortunately they proved me right. We have too many holes in the squad. A team of weak players, where the stamina, speed and strength required isn't there. All across the pitch we are simply outpaced. No one bar Bruno crosses the ball, no one bar Amad can beat a man and no one bar Ugarte can win a ball in midfield. And then you have Onana doing that... how can we compete? It'll take multiple transfer windows of good recruitment to make us a decent team, it'll take world class recruitment to make us a top team. Because these players simply aren't PL level.

Can we not? Please. I hate it when we jump straight to the referee. It's just a terrible defence mechanism. He das poor for around ten minutes and then he was fine for the rest of the game.
No, if the Brighton players got rightfully booked, it completely changes how they play. It happened a lot to our players that they got booked for nothing and our play suffered because of the need to play more cautiously. The ref didn't give them at least 3 yellow cards and 2 corners.

I think we're one of, if not the worst team in the PL currently. A relegation candidate. Slow, shite players on massive wages, complacency, disrespect for club, the list is endless. Amorim has no future in this cesspool. I feel sorry for the man but it's an impossible job. He's also making it extra hard by sticking to his 3-4-3/5-3-2 crap.

Disastrous result. Make no mistake about it. Brighton have become serial points collectors at Old Trafford. They're not a million miles away from treating us the way we used to treat Aston Villa. Old Trafford must be their second favourite ground.

The reality is we never looked like making any chances of substance from open play. We had some brief spells where we got our man-to-man press right and squeezed errors out of them. However, once that got slack, it only needed them to get us backpedalling to create chances to score.

Getting back to 1-1 at half-time and then tossing it in the second half shows how much we've gone to pot. Really awful result.

We are nothing going forward, we are like sieve in defence. There is nothing to take from any of these results.

As others have said predictable loss. Thought it would be 2-3 but we were really poor in attack so couldn't score one back towards the end.

First half was decent after their goal but now it was 2nd half that was poor. They had most of the ball, most attacks were theirs so eventually they'd score. And it's 2-1 for them as Onana stays on his line instead of clearing the ball. Afterwards it's 3-1 as Onana spills it. Maybe we could've got the draw but those 2 mistakes made sure we wouldn't.

When it comes to league, basically we'll have to win a game from time to time and turn some defeats into draws. Then we'll be able to finish with 40-45 points which is bad enough but not as bad as it could be if we fail to win some games.

We've got PL games coming up like Fulham away and Palace at home. Not sure there are many fans that would back us to win either of those atm so I'm quite worried. Painful season and 4 months of pain yet to go.

I think fatigue is a big factor, then lack of options for rotation in certain positions which gives teams areas to exploit. Still we lack the overall physicality.
Spot on. But we have zero solution to fix these fundamental issues. It’s getting worse (fatigue, lack of intensity, etc)

Now that Ipswich and Southampton will surely be relegated, Im hoping we will be able to snatch some of their players and hopefully our lineup next season will be significantly stronger.

I say this after every game, but the issue, constantly, is physicality. We can't press properly for this reason, can't win second balls because we're brushed off on every duel, can't buildup properly because the players can't recover their positions quickly enough for this reason. From minute one of every game, it feels like watching a side that's playing extra time. I don't know how other feel, but I feel physically exhausted just watching us try to pass the ball around and do something on the pitch. Are we just that burnt out as a squad? Why is this not an issue with other teams? What are we doing in training / physiotherapy / recovery that makes us so much worse off as athletes?
Spot on. I also feel exactly like this. It feels like our team is playing through mud. Late to every challenge, losing every 50/50. I suppose when other parts of your footballing side is bang average to crap (recruitment, coaching, medical department) and have outdated and poor facilities as has been documented countless of times, it's no surprise that sports conditioning is also a few levels below, the rest of the league.

Can we not? Please. I hate it when we jump straight to the referee. It's just a terrible defence mechanism. He das poor for around ten minutes and then he was fine for the rest of the game.
He incorrectly failed to send a Brighton player off which would have changed the game massively.

Banter f.c.Not even worth getting angry with anymore. How a club can be so woefully ran for such a period of time tells the story. Weak, spineless inept individuals all over the park. Home to Brighton and not one shot on target from open play is unforgivable. Then you have arguably the worst goalkeeper currently playing in the Premier league (I'd honestly take any other teams keeper from the top flight) coupled in with a back line who can't be relied upon. And an attack who don't seem to be able to do the basics let alone score goals and this is the end result. Those players won't be going through what the fans are going through I'm pretty sure of that. This team bar 1 or 2 is very easy to dislike.

I remember i was heavily critisized when i wrote in a comment that i think Amorim is doing an awful job. Why? Because he keeps forcing his favourite formation despite he hasn't got the suitable players. Today's game was a perfect example. (Not to mention the absolutly disaster Zirkzee in the starting XI). To play this formation succesfully the portuguese needed 10 new players. We did not sign a single one yet, which means if he won't change his mind we're gonna have several losses in the second half of the season and will finish just above the relegation zone. Awful, horrible. (And yes, we had De Gea, but needed Onana for 50m. Joke.).

What is the solution to this? Just seem to turn up when it suits them. It's all so tiring. Cannot do the basics, lack of effort, can't pass to each other, second to every ball. Brighton passed around them like they were traffic cones. Awful.
Either a one or a combination of a January signing in a weak area or promoting another youth player. Addressing the fatigue and lack of depth that is compounded with a general mismatching of players so that alone would help ride out this terrible wave.

Congested fixture schedule means fewer training sessions to not only learn Amorim’s system, but more importantly to unlearn Ten Hag’s system whatever it was. I think the team only had 7 or 8 full training sessions since Amorim arrived?

And contrary to what low-knowledge or over-emotional posters would say, it’s not necessary to replace 75% of the squad in one go. Even something as normal as 3 in, 3 out paired with a summer of consistent training sessions would likely have us in a more competitive state come next season.

We also have to keep in mind that we’ve been recruiting well in young players who will eventually be first-team ready and inherently more familiar with the system. This season is going to be a shit sandwich in the league, which was already warned to us. We simply need to survive it, ideally in top half, and godwilling an FA or EL victory.

Disappointing game. Brighton were prepared to play a certain way which pulled the plug. Disappointed to once again looking like getting outfought at home. Players should be a bit ashamed, they were so encouraged to fight with a great Liverpool performance but since then, it mostly vanished to the same slightly subpar level we criticized before.. I actually thought, no player really sticked out too negatively today but as a unit, the other unit was just more functional and seemingly more motivated. First thing I can accept, second not so much.

edit: obviously Onana with a terrible mistake but that didn't lose us the game. I probably would have written the same things had we somehow drawn that game once again with some late goal

How can the club and the execs sit by and watch shitty f**king clubs like Brighton and Bournemouth have their day every time they come to OT?

I don't understand what was the point of bringing in Amorim halfway through the season when clearly what he wants to do needs time, training and players capable of executing the system? I'm not questioning Amorim's appointment, but moreso our lack of action in this window and what was the plan after the appointment?

Now his hesitation before joining is clear. But surely there must have been some promises? Compromise?

It's all good and well saying that this season is a write off, but we are United. We will be mocked, ridiculed and lines and lines written about our shortcomings. This is not Chelsea, where you can get beaten at home by Brentford like 3 years in a row and nobody remembers.
The people in charge of the club are completely clueless. Switching system in the middle of the season with these players? Spending vast amount on championship players. This will continue until these people are gone. Keep buying Höjlunds for 70m and face the consequences.

Our game should simply start with ref not going to give us anything.
I thought utd weren’t that bad as the score line suggest but their defence wasn’t tested.
They were physically and athletically better team.
Keeper should be sold and can have career somewhere else , how many points/matches onana going to cost us?
The lack of movement of attackers behind defence should be good focus, lack of runners and putting a reasonable cross in are basics. Brighton 2 goals came from crosses at the heart of it
Somehow utd make the attack look so complicated and it was the same before amorim

Everything is to slow. The goalkeeper is basically a clown without the uniform.
Players need to put in a 90 minute shift not a 29 minute shift and that’s being generous.

What is the solution to this? Just seem to turn up when it suits them. It's all so tiring. Cannot do the basics, lack of effort, can't pass to each other, second to every ball. Brighton passed around them like they were traffic cones. Awful.

Yeah pretty much. I don’t know the answer, it’s depressing.

What a shit performance, we had one shot on target imagine. Just a very poor side we are. Tbf Brighton have better players than our team and it shows, I would take Mintah, Mitoma, Baleba, Joa Pedro in a heartbeat. Would be very happy to let go Garnacho, it would be stupid not to take 50M if offered for him. We would signings now!! Atleast one winger on the other side to add threat to our attack alongside Amad and one Left Wingback is a must.

It was worse than that. The shot on target was the penalty.

I do not understand why we lost the ball and fail to win the ball back from the opponent all the time. Every time when Brighton players had the ball; we just simply could not take the ball away from their feet. Not to mention we lost header and second chance balls as usual.

Can our players just keep playing simple? Do they know the basic of football? Pass run pass. Stronger than the opponent when fighting for the ball.

And, oh man, I do not have faith in Onana since day one to be honest. No doubt he has made some fantastic saves; but also made numbers of stupid mistakes. Also, I really don’t like he looks so confident when holding the ball in the restricted area but not making any useful direction to the team. Waste time holding the ball and eventually kick the ball to the sideline.

Again, what’s wrong with the referee. Brighton player last touched the ball on the bottom line but no corner? March dived when he was facing Yolo and you gave a foul against Yolo? Tickled with 2 feet and not a foul? Why the referee has been so biased recently?

Many problems with this team, but our athleticism and physicality may be one of the worse in the league, plus this team seems a brainfart away from falling apart. There's also a lack of intensity and that 2nd half I never felt like we'd get anything from it. You'd think we'd push on after Brighton got a goal ruled off by VAR, but nope. Brighton are a bit of a bogey side, but they didn't have to play that well. That 2nd half has to be a massive wake up call for the club and INEOS. No transfer business done this month is negligence

The fact we haven't won more than one game in a row all season tells you everything you need to know about this team. There are no corners turned, there is no reason for optimism. Our wins aren't convincing and our defeats are predictable.

Our only two wins in recent times were crazy late victories over City & Southampton. Prior to that it was the Everton game which is the last time we held a lead in the league for any significant period of time.

We have a 'winnable' run of games coming up but you can't feel confident about any of them. We should be looking at that fixture list and thinking we might win 6 or 7 of those. Instead it's possible we find a way to lose each of them. We will pick up the odd result here or there and you may expect the Europa League to offer an easier time of it but you wouldn't be surprised to lose any of those games.

Started the game very slowly but I felt we started to build and we were deserving of our goal. We had a strong defensive unit and Brighton found it hard to break us down.

This was not a brilliant Brighton performance IMO. However, our usual lack of intelligence, communication and finishing let us down. After the first ten minutes of the second half we began to lose control and passing became a problem. It shows that this set of players have a real lack of athleticism and fitness to compete in the Premier League when there are midweek games.

Bruno and Ugarte played very well against Liverpool because they had the day off against Newcastle. Some of this team just can't compete without a clear break. A lot needs to change in this club but the decay has been there after so many years of ineptitude and not giving a hoot about the club as a footballing enterprise by the Glazers. It's a long way back from here.

On the bright side, even at our lowest ebb Spurs have found a way to still be worse than us.

We stopped playing after we scored the penalty. The 10 mins leading up to that is the only time we played with the requisite intensity.
