Irrespective of a release clause, can't he just pay out the rest of his contract? Sure Barca could help him there...

I would imagine his contract won't be much more than the current rumoured bid?

Fairly sure that's not allowed or else no one would pay any transfer fee.

A minimum release clause is seperate from the value of the contract length. There is always a clause to get out of a contract with financial penalties for either party.

They could go to court and be far worse off than accepting the current offer.
I think all the big clubs agreed to not do that because it would feck up the whole transfer system. Could be wrong there.

Not sure barcelona is offering that much, probably just slightly more, but will they if the fee is set to be 150 - 160 m ? If barcelona had so much money to offer they would have offered it to neymar himself.
No, barca are offering him that much. Neymar cost him twice that in wages, and the money for the transfer fee comes from his buyout clause. Barca couldn't afford to give neymar €60M a year, that's what they're giving Messi(if he signs, at this point). Coutinho and Dembelé will cost them €40M a year in wages, combined

I've always preferred Barca to Madrid but after some of the stunts they have tried to pull this summer, I hope Madrid piss the league by 20 points. Even small cheap tactics like them making bids for Coutinho just before our PL games has made me hate them completely. I won't even comment on the actual bids and their bs instalments and clauses.

Wonder how much resolve he will have to stick to his statement in the thread title, if Liverpool refuse to sell.

Direct translation...

The Catalan press insists that Liverpool want more pasta by Coutinho. English club reiterates that simply they do not sell it! #NoEsLoMismo

There you have it folks, more pasta required.

Pasta or toothpaste?

Yes they are IMO. He's a £60-70m player max. Flashes in and out of games. Only really had about 3 months of decent form. Madness not to take the money and strengthen their team.
They're holding out for an unrealistic amount and if they're not careful they're going to end up with a player they don't want to keep when the window shuts.

Also, they've going to have massive problems strengthening this late in the window. Cue throwing big money at Southampton again...

They offered 80 mil over 5 years?

They cannot use the 80 mil straight away to buy a replacement since it'll be more like 16 mil or smth this year.

Barca are such a disgusting club, they did the same with fabregas when they knew he would only go back to them and low balled us on the transfer price when he was one the top midfielders in the world. Shit transfer way below his market valuation and I believe they paid installments that time as well.

Also why does everyone assume he'll stop playing for them if they end up keeping him?
It's a world cup year so it's in his best interests to be sharp and play as much if he wants to get picked by Brazil

PSG are signing Mbappé afterall and Draxler will be on the market. At this point, i think liverpool might be able to sign draxler and VVD with the money from Coutinho. Might even go for the draxler-pastore combo. They earn a lot at psg, around £175k a week, but it shouldn't be outside liverpool's budget...

Most team structure payments over the length of the contract. It's usually only exceptional transfers that the whole price is paid at once.

It's all about the way it's staggered. A first installment of £50M followed by another four installments of £8M isn't a ridiculous offer. Five installments of £16M is a joke

and the money for the transfer fee comes from his buyout clause.

But the combined transfer fee for coutinho and dembele will suprass the 222 m euros they recived for neymar, plus they signed paulinho.

So excluding the fee for Neymar as it's Qatari money... the current offer would make him the world's most expensive player. And he isn't the world's best player. So I would say that makes it a good deal.

For one thing, they haven't signed either one of coutinho or dembele, for another, i seriously doubt they paid the fees for semedo and paulinho upfront, i doubt they'd agree to pay more than €100-120M upfront for those two(combined), and they have their own transfer kitty still half full, and plenty of other players they can sell...

Here's the counter-argument from the player's perspective: signed a new contract five months ago worth £150k a week. Now Barcelona have offered me £300k a week. So that's what i'm worth now. Liverpool is costing me £7.8M a year right now. Thus, i want to do anything i can to convince them to allow me to go earn the career contract i've been offered

I'm pretty sure I heard that he'd be taking a wage cut to Join Barcelona.

Technically, wouldnt the money needed to pay for Coutinho also be said Qatari money though?

Let's not pretend that the contract he signed doesnt work in favour of Pool as well.

It's quite simple. It suited both parties at the time to sign that contract, Coutinho gets more pay and security against a long term injury, Pool for his prolonged service and/or the ability to extortionately price him if he wants out. Bringing loyalty or what not into the discussion is misguided.

Now Coutinho has the biggest opportunity of his life to make that step up. Next summer he might be injured, next summer Barca may want another prodigy, or another established player, next summer there might be a change in hierarchy/coach at Barca which wont fancy him. It's now or never. Pool are being offered money well over his worth, it's not like he's running his contract down and feck them over. Split amicably, or the next promising youngster they want to buy will look at this transfer and starts having second thought.

Doesn´t seem so simple, cause you clearly do not understand it.

Coutinho signed a contract and Liverpool aren´t obliged to do anything, if they don´t want to. They decide what Coutinho is worth, not you, not me, not Barcelona and not Coutinho. All Liverpool are obliged to do is provide him with an opportunity to train under professional working conditions.

Albeit, Liverpool at the moment is not one of the biggest clubs in the EPL, let alone the world, so being stubborn with Coutinho will lead to young players eager for game time think twice about signing for them. They will look to Spurs, Everton, Atletico, Sevilla etc instead.
I doubt it. As a young talent you typically only have a few clubs interested in you in the first place, and you expect a starlet to put potential difficulties in a future move to Barcelona that might never materialize above money and opportunity here and now? Coutinho wasn't even thinking about the possibility six months ago when he signed a new contract. Players simply don't think that far ahead.

Can't believe Madrid haven't tried to sell Bale and be all over Mbappe, absolutely scandalous IMO. Mind you PSG are on steroids so financially competing with them is beyond any club at the moment.

Yep I think that there is a kind of stand off scenario where they know they would get it done to themselves. "Gentleman sagreement"

Or perhaps here is a internal league or FIFA rule to prevent it?

I think a player needs to be 3 years into their contract before they can buy it out. He only signed one recently so he wouldn't be able.

Why don't clubs just let a player go and take good money so they can regroup on time? First it was Barca refusing PSG's Neymar bid but eventually still selling him after wasting everybody's time, now they're scrambling for Coutinho who Liverpool should have let go since like last week as he clearly wants to leave and got other players in. What is the point of rejecting the bid? To keep an unhappy player? Get more money?

With whom? It's crazy summer with the window soon closing. Making desperate bids would mean they will most likely buy a replacement for more money who is a lesser player. Sigurdsson just moved for 45m pounds. He's on long term contract so they might consider keeping him one more season till next summer when the market isn't that volatile..

Madrid will piss the league I think thats a given at this point
