Phil Jones Future | Reports: Observing United academy sessions

That’s where i’d disagree mate currently based on the last two years. I rate Baily lower than Phil and Mike to be honest. He’s still fairly young but he’s regressed since his first season badly.

Smallings our best defender so if we sign no one he’ll very likely still be first choice.
Interesting. I guess we'll see in coming weeks exactly what Ole thinks about this.

Somewhere out there Anderson is looking on with unabashed admiration. He nearly pulled off the testimonial challenge, Phil is going to make it:cool:

Better player than many give him credit for, though the decision to extend both he and Smalling makes me concerned for Bailly. Rojo has to be gone, no loss there, but if they want to try for a Skriniar/De Ligt/ Koulibaly space will need to be freed up.

I thought the one we were after was a bit darker in his skin and played for a team in Italy? This one doesn't look one bit like the one we wanted... or am I missing something?

How good is he even going to be in four years time considering all the injuries? I know they're not of the bigger/more serious variety but still at some point it takes its toll. Don't see Jones being any good when he starts losing some of his athleticism.

See woody this is why you desperately needed a DoF , like five years back

I don't see the sense of giving him a new 4 years and plus contract. We have lots of centre back options right now, Jones has done nothing special to deserve the contract and he is an injury prone. What's the plan? Hoping that he can stay away from injury (we had this every season) or hoping that he will turn into the new Duncan Edwards in his prime age?

Good signing. Coming into his prime as a centre back and personally for me our second best CB. Great news.
If the club shared your opinion it would make sense but having already extended Smalling's contract, this seems odd.

Bournemouth paid £20m for Solanke. Jones is worth £25-30m for sure.
They are paying 20m for a 21 year old striker with potential, basically an uknown quantity at this stage. With Jones you know what you are getting, an injury prone mediocre CB on high wages. Nobody is going to pay 30m and offer wages that would be acceptable for him.

I hope to God his wages have gone down. I can't see why else we would renew his contract when we've got a perfectly able substitute for him in Axel. Throw in Bailly, Lindelof and A.N.Other and we've got too many centre backs. Rojo and Jones should've been let go. Only good that can come out of this is we sell him rather than let him go on a free.

This is one of the more ludicrous points being made in this thread. We do not need Jones to fill the English quota, we have academy and English players out the arse.

Rashford
Lingard
Pogba
Smalling
Young
Shaw
Grant
Lukaku
Periera
McTominay

Then you have the likes of:

Chong
Gomez
Greenwood
Tuanzebe

all looking to come into the sqaud.

Then you have English players we can buy which are plentiful.

Phil Jones has missed 131 games due to injury...that is 3 full seasons! Phil Jones has been injured 19 times in 8 years
And this is why people have a problem with his contract renewal.
Its something that Arsenal would do not an elite team.
Rewarding a sick note with a FIVE yes five year contract.

Why do you post on a discussion board if your only opinion is that the coaching staff (not that you have any proof they made this decision, although I'm sure they were consulted) and the club are always right?

To answer your question though, what I see in Jones is a man who cannot be relied upon; a man who has been here for eight years and only just scratched 200 games in all competitions, and a man who, when he has played, has veered from mediocre to abysmal. I see a man whose constant injury record has masked the fact that when he has played he's rarely, if ever, consistently looked like he should be a starting player for a title winning side.

What I see is another example of a club rewarding mediocrity, and what I see is the club throwing up barriers to getting youth players minutes by continuing to keep the squad bloated and full of deadwood. Even as a 'squad option' it's a poor bit of business.
Agree 100%. Also fair question at the start. Forums are for debate and speculation.

Hoped we would get rid. Surprised, more so because he just keeps getting injured.

This thread . What the feck people mention him being English and his age, check the amount of games he missed due injuries, even so i feel sorry for him in that regard, that never stopped him to be a laughing joke here on this forum by majority. Now, after few games, he got a new contract under Ole, so because its under Ole, it makes sense for some, if this happened under JM at the time presacking, most would say how he trying to ruin us.

Oh, those who have issue with this are silly clowns, wanting him to go for free. fecking yea? Let him go, for years we are talking about CB partnerships and importance of it, with whom he can create long term partnership when he is injured and on the table every 3rd week. Squad option? Sure, if he is fit enough to sit on the bench.

Never had issue with Jones, him being injured isnt his 100% fault, its unlucky but if he got a new contract, i really hope, there is something in it addressing him being paid only when he is fit, otherwise its a joke and i dont even care about the money for wages but as example is not good.

I hope he’s on an appearance based contract otherwise he’s going to cost us a fortune stuck on the treatment table!!!

Aside form the fact that he is an poor/average defender, I think its terrible management to give a long term contract to player with significant injury problems.

19 pages for Phil Jones's contract renewal. Never thought it would happen. Did Fellaini's get anywhere near this?

Fellaini was never a Utd player. Panic buy that had some moments.

Jones is far more a Utd player than Fellaini ever was

Always liked and rated Jones. I'm sure nobody at the club is expecting him to suddenly stop getting injured and there are no plans to build a back four around him. He'll make a contribution and, like your O'Shea's, Phil Neville's, Henning Berg's, David May's and Wesley Brown's (I know, 2008) you need players who can come in but don't necessarily demand a starting place. In that role, his experience is far more valuable than a younger's potential.

So having Smalling, Jones, Bailly and Lindelof in the ranks next season rules out a top class CB arrival does it not....you do the maths, Woodward already has!

That doesn't really make sense. Fellaini was a United player for six years and probably made more appearances than Jones in a United shirt. That's a pretty long time.

I don't think its a bad call. Home grown English center back approaching his prime years and happy with a squad role.
Good luck to him

Same here. Rojo and Darmian are obviously on their way out, Valencia appears to be finished, that's already 3 departures at the back - 2 of whom are RBs, a position Jones can cover if essential.

Selling one of Jones or Smalling would be fine, but they're also both HG players, and with the complete mystery that is Brexit, keeping British players until the summer isn't a bad idea.

We should do a sweepstake. How many appearences he'll make over the initial 4 years, providing he see's them out. I'm going with 60.

Based on what? Just cause he played more at the club? He sure had his moments too, large number of terrible monets.

This is equally as bad as fellaini leaving was good

Jones isn't as good as any of those, even May would be close.

And we've given him a 4+1 year contract. Strikes of a lack of ambition and cheapness.

fecking joke. Can't sign decent players because we don't have a DoF but apparently it's fine to tie up proven failures on long contracts.
