Phil Jones Future | Reports: Observing United academy sessions

On one hand I don’t want to be negative towards our players, on the other, I really don’t rate him and he should have been one of the first players we looked to offload. This is a lengthy contract for such an average, injury-prone player. Next season, the CB pecking order should be:

(New signing)
Lindelof
Smalling
Bailly
Jones

But hell, I even think Tuanzebe has a higher ceiling and shouldn’t go on loan again. So I really don’t know what to take from this news. Congrats Phil, I guess.
We already have Rojo (almost like a new signing). We are not buying any defenders.
We'll try to outscore opposition. That's the game plan I think

Not sure I agree. Let's say we got rid of Phil Jones and got in a new quality CB. Then we would have New CB, Lindelof, Smalling and Bailly. I would be quite comfortable with those four and then a couple of youth players as back-up. Typically we have also had other players who can do a job there, such as Blind, Carrick and Matic in recent years. I would prefer to rely on that and youth players, rather than bloating the squad and spending extra wages on an extra senior CB.

Just look at how little playing time Rojo has gotten since he came back from injury. He is in essence the 5th CB right now, and not really needed.

I agree about Rojo, you can almost count on one hand the really good games he's played for United, in between injuries, but Jones is worth his place in the squad, he can double up as full back as well and has even done reasonably well as an emergency defensive CM. When Bailly arrived thought there might be a case for letting one of Rojo, Smalling or Jones go, but Eric's no longer filling me with confidence and Smalling still is abundle of nerves and gets a nose-bleed every time he has to carry the ball over the halfway line. Keep Jones!

I don't know what to make of this. I really thought Jones would be the centre back that left to make way for the new summer signing.

Now we must either find someone stupid enough to buy Rojo or it's unlikely we will sign another centre back, unless they plan to sell Bailly, which I think would be a mistake.

To make matters worse, I heard the news while driving to work. I thought it was pretty odd that LBC were mentioning Phil Jones, only to find out it was news of a new contract. Needless to say I almost drove my car into a ditch.

This is a joke. Jones is not a reliable enough player to be in the squad of a team challenging for honours. He is not reliable enough in terms of fitness or ability and to me this extension just shows a complete lack of ambition by the club. I would not be surprised if he was injured any time soon and spends a fair amount of time missing which would be no bad thing in my opinion. Every time he has the ball, or is anywhere near it, I get the collywobbles just waiting for the usual brainfart.
We have also just signed Young on a new contract. Is Smalling next? All these should be signed on lower wage contracts, if at all, to make room for decent replacements come the summer. What will any new manager think if he comes in to have three defenders of dubious ability/age that he is unable to offload.

Smalling is done already isn't he?

Can't wait to turn up for next season with Jones, Smalling and Young playing a combined 120+ games between them.

Absolute joke extending any of their contracts. Have proven time and time again they aren't good enough for a club with ambitious such as ours yet they get rewarded with improved deals. Feck off.

damn, wtf! why? how? even if we renew his contract, he doesnt deserve such long renewal contract. 2 years is max. I'm not happy with this news.

Jones has 2 own goals, 0 errors leading to goals and 0 red cards in 191 EPL appearances. Smalling in comparison has 3 own goals, 3 errors leading to goals and 1 red card in 208 appearances (according to the premier league). But Jones is the one that is being made out as a liability, the one that costs us every game, scoring own goals left, right and center. Why? Because everything Jones does is blown out of proportion.
That's why I suggest you start watching the football matches and not statistics. Phil Jones is a total liability compared to Smalling, that's why the reaction to Chris signing a new contract was not half as bad as this one.

Let me remind you apart from those 2 own goals noted, Phil scored maybe his finest piece against Chelsea away last year, only for the referee to save his ass, wrongfully. And the slight detail of 2 Champions League own goals as well, the last one against Valencia some months back. And that errors leading to goals is total crap. 0 errors leading to goal? Really? Go and watch our match against Spurs away last year, firstly he lost the first header, then fails to get back into position and jogs back while Spurs scored inside 10 seconds. If you failed to see how much of a disaster he really is, then that's that, I can't change your mind despite so many signs pointing out the contrary.

To be honest I think the reaction to the Phil Jones contract is worse than the Chris Smalling one because it came second. When one gets his renewal there isnt much outrage because it makes sense to keep one, you assume it means the other one is off. But when you renew both it suggests both will stay, raising doubts we will get anyone new.

I predict Phil Jones will now go on to become one of the most world class defenders. Then he'll get injured the next game.

Back four sorted now
Young-Smalling-Jones-Shaw
Watch out Everton here we come!

It also doesn't help that unlike Smalling, Jones has been injured 20 times in last 7 years as opposed to 9 times Smalling has been injured.
And Smalling has missed around 58 games due to injury while Phil has missed around 130 games

Ridiculous news. He's a fecking joke of a footballer whose been injured for half the time he's been here, and he's going to get a testimonial. We're a club run by mugs who give a free ride to wasters like him. You'd think after Anderson we'd learn, but no, we repeatedly make the same mistakes.

This feels a little bitter sweet.

I like Jones; he knows the values of the club and always puts his body on the line game in and game out. I will always have respect for any of our players who does that.

Unfortunately I don’t think his talent level and consistency (due to injuries) is good enough to start for Manchester United. Even as squad player I find it difficult as TFM and Tuanzebe should be in the first team squad next year.

If Jones stays does this mean the end for Smalling and Rojo? If as expected we sign a top centre half in the summer to partner VL then that’s two to many backup centre halfs.

Bailly, Smalling, Jones, Rojo. (Two would surely be sold?)

I hope he's just seen as a good backup and decent rotation option. He's always struck me as a confidence player where he could on a run of games and would look good but one mistake and it's all the way back down the momentum mountain so to speak.

So with Smalling and now Jones recently signing new multi year contracts it's unlikely either will be leaving this summer, Lindelof is young and has been playing well so i doubt he's leaving. We will almost certainly bring in a new CB in the summer and we have Tuanzebe coming back also which would give us 5 central defenders.

Rojo has to be a goner and probably Bailly too i'd imagine.

Isnt that debatable? Feels at least as likely that we will stick with Bailly as we will twist with a new signing. More likely, IMO.

Pushing out Bailly while keeping Jones/Smalling will be such a wonderful idea. And if Rojo is injured come summer, he is not going anywhere.

I don't think we will bring anyone at CB. If opposition score 3, we'll score 4

It’s pretty obvious this football club has no ambition to be the best, signing young and Jones to new contracts says to me we don’t want to spend money on a RB and a CB, we will get by what we got. Top football clubs who inspire to be the best will say (hey we need better defenders) deadwood fc continues to prevail, and every new contract handed by this clown has our chief executive is one less new player signed up. Where is our director of football? to stop these idiots handing out contracts to midtable players

Jones new contract = no new top class CB
Young and if Valencia gets a new contract = new new RB
Matic if he gets a new contract = no new DM
Mata if he gets a new contract = no new Top class attacking forward on the right
Keeping Sanchez and lukaku means it stops us getting fresh new attacking forwards who will give us the us the edge we need.

Deadwood fc are the blue prints of glazer/Woodward economics cost cutting at its finest. Not to mention how this club allows players contracts to go the very end, just to not pay them more money, the structure of this club is all about how much they can take from the club and keep keep the debt going. Until we get an ownership who understands what it takes to win and ruthlessly remove the deadwood, we will always be a club never to compete for titles

I cringe at ole saying jones gives us experience in the ability to win titles, when his last title was 6 years ago, what’s he done since? Ah yes he cost us the fa cup, and spent more time in the treatment table making mistakes on the pitch, and he gets a new contract for that, and if I’m not mistaken Ferdinand and vidic were still playing during that title win. Barcelona are planning life without messi, and we giving jones, smalling and mctominay lifetime contracts, it’s not if there is a cue if clubs after these players. But that’s the difference between a huge club who acts like a big club, and us.

The board are a big problem, and it’s quiet amazing Valencia, young, Jones, smalling, rojo, mata, are all still at this club. Only the glazer run MUFC within a space of a few months Jones and smalling get long term contracts, for spending half the time on the treatment table

They keep saying they want to do things the 'United Way', yet that way was always based on a solid defence. We have had some of the best CB's in PL history.

So you are telling me he has made zero errors that led to us conceding?

For a start the first stat contradicts the second one. And i've no idea how they measure what constitutes an error but it obviously can't be true as he's conceded penalties in the league so it definitely can't be 0. Even setting aside own goals and penalties conceded he has made other errors that lead to us conceding goals in his 8 seasons at the club. And thats no criticism of Jones every defender makes mistakes.
