2years earlier rojo signed a new 5 year deal since than he has done absolutely nothing.

Jones will be the same.

People are not understanding that we have so many players with contracts running down we basically have to offer something to everyone and the up as many as we can.

Giving people contracts doesn't stop you making signings and improving the squad. Letting a whole bunch of them walk out at once means a scramble to sign anyone you can just to have enough players.

So basically Lindelof, Bailly, Mike and Jones. Hopefully we'll sell Rojo at least although I wouldn't hold my breath.

In the words of that bit of Canadian crumpet Shania Twain. “You must be joking right”?

Am I fecking seeing things here or what?
The world is full of bad news and now this.

Come on where’s the punch line?

We pay the scouts too, why can't we scout our own mcguire or new upcoming talents?

So no new cb in the summer?
I fecking hope so. I think Darmian and Rojo are certain to leave and that we will go all in for one of Koulibaly/De Ligt/Skriniar. I even think we will settle for Aldeweireld if we cant get anyone of those.
Valencia might leave as well and that means that we have to replace three defenders this summer which is a lot. A top CB, Tuanzebe in and a FB is my guess. Thats plenty for one summer in defense IMO. Thats my main argument for why its a good decision to keep Jones around for at least one more season.

You mentioned couple of good factors, I agree. But you missed the one that is on point here, awarding mediocrity. Which is the issue here. Same as Rojo before, Jones doesn't deserve a new contract. They are bellow the quality required and they are not dependable to be squad players.
Jones is a starter in a team that has won 9 out of 10 ten games - title winning form. I think our poor performances in the last few years have in hindsight, mostly had to do with poor managerial appointments, poor signings and poor decisions from managers. He will start another game not because we are rewarding mediocrity, but because of his performances in his last games. He's also got a new contract not because we are rewarding mediocrity, but because we'd be better off giving him a new contract than letting him go and weakening the team while gaining nothing.

We can let Jones and Rojo go and still be fine numbers wise at the CB spot. I think Jones contract symbolizes that no one is coming in at the CB position,

I'm fine with it if they can unload both Bailly and Rojo in the summer. Lindelöf + new top CB with Jones + Smalling as backups is not bad. Tuanzebe can be number 5.

question is if they can find takers. I have my doubts ... no one's going to be interested in Rojo especially.

I've been saying this for a while.
Our aim is to save money. It's far easier to extend a contract (for no transfer fee), than if we sold and bought a new CB.
The excuse that Jose's targets were not suitable for purchase, is rubbish. It was a money saving exercise, which we are continuing to see, after Jose has left.
I shall wait to see what the excuse will be next Summer, for not spending.

And as for P.Jones - WTF!
This guy has cost us a lot of points. There is a mistake in this guy, in every match.

Dear Ed Woodward

Since the club is handing out contracts to anything with a heartbeat, is there any way I can get one too?

Thanks xx
Brilliant. I don’t hate Jones the man, i don’t know him other than watching him try to play football.
I just hate to see his name on our team sheet.
If we could sell him to say Liverpool then I’d love to see his name on the team sheet every week.
I hope that clarifies my position on this attrocous bit of Woody business.

Ed can calmly say we have quality CBs and if it isn't Varane we won't buy any new player for that position.

people are more willing to give Jones a try than Bailly? wow

I dont want to tempt fate but he seems to be on an injury free run. Hes not a bad player, prone to odd mistake and rash challanges. Lets not forget he was bought by SAF. We have had a very good run with him in the team under ole and conceding less goals - but you will never stop the haters/moaner.
Hes not RIO class etc but until we sign someone of that class Jonesy has to do the job. I had a lot of respect for him when he went and stood in with the fans to watch Liverpool away, you could see his passion

If his contract is up this summer better to sign him up and get a fee if we decide to sell than he walks away on a free.

And you want to take a risk on being able to sign them or leaving ourselves with no one?

We lose nothing by giving a player a new contract. Look at Fellaini. It's baffling why we let so many run their contracts down

Can we? That'd leave us with Smalling, Bailly and Lindelof, two of who spend half their time being injured.

Why do you think not letting players leave for free means we won't sign anyone? It makes no sense at all from a business point of view.

If we are looking to sell why not give him a 2 year contract? What's the odds he gets crocked tomorrow and is out for the rest of the season

Maybe you are trying to be ironic here but you are probably kind of right. I am one hundred percent convinced that the club will be pursuing a top class CB this summer. But it will be top shelf targets. Like Varane/De Ligt/Koulibaly/Skriniar. Maybe even Aldeweireld. Their clubs must want to sell and the player will need to want to come as well. I dont know why you are ridiculing Woodward - if this is his principle - for a transfer policy that is completely lucid. We dont need to replace players like Jones and Smalling with similar or even a ltb better players. We need to get a really top CB in. Same goes for CM where we probably need at least two now with Fellaini leaving.

We would still have Tuanzebe coming back from loan. And most top sides get by with 4 senior CBs. Plus there is a big difference between not letting a player walk on a free and giving him a 4 year contract with an option for a fifth. The contract means that want Jones at the club for years to come.

Will be the 4th, 5th option as a CB. He can play as RB or DM for emergency if there are many players injured and he is not one of them

I fear Ed will again want to do a Hollywood signing or nothing. We need to get a wc CB, I just hope it will be Ole or whoever will the permanent manager will be not Ed doing his watch this space stuff. And if we won't go for a CB Ed will get all the abuse he deserves.

To the poster you quoted as well - Woodward's excuse is already in.

"Look at the difference Ole made in half a season. We have a very good squad of players who all deserve a clean slate and a chance at a full pre-season and full season under Ole's positive leadership. This same squad finished 2nd the season before and there's no reason they cannot do the same, or better, again - we are backing Ole to return this squad of players to where they belong."

Another season of saving money.

This has a lot to do with Brexit/work permits or exemptions and the mooted changes to the homegrown quotas, I suspect. Along with protecting the value of an asset. Players like Phil Jones will see their value go up as clubs try to pad out their squads with homegrown players. And there’ll be a market for him if we try to sell next year.

Well now at least we know the worst thing that Brexit has resulted in.

Tuanzebe should be taking his place as 5th choice CB.

We currently have Lindelof, Bailly, Smalling, Rojo, Jones and we had Blind.

I'm sure we could go into next year with:

Ball playing CB...
1) Lindelof
2) Tuanzebe (not sure if he is a ball player?)
3) Jones

Brick Wall CB..
1) Koulibaly or Bailly/ Manalos
2) Bailly/ Manolas
3) Smalling

In regards to the Koulibaly and Manalos that was one or the other, I.e. we save budget and go for Manalos with him and Bailly fighting for top 2 slots and otherwise Koulibaly would take top with Bailly second.

Jones and Smalling as 3rd choice, rarely required options fills me with a certain sense of confidence, as they are both well experienced and could step in and do a good job as backups, certainly better than someone from the youth team who hasn't had any loans or minimal senior experience.

Soon as I saw the news I thought the comments would be great to read, slightly disappointed to be honest.

I do not want Jones at this club as much as the next guy but we need to be reasonable.
He's a 26/27 year old regular England international. He's worth £30m.

Koulibaly is much more of a ball playing CB than a Brick Wall CB.

Made up ? Let's talk about our club having ambition again here. Mourinho ambition is clearly bigger than the club and it's exactly the reason why he got sacked. Club with ambition won't extend Smalling, Jones and Young.

You keep saying that but none of that is clear. It’s clear to me that Mourinho’s ambitions was tiny. Just win a PL and then brag about it to the press playing boring football and emptying out the stadium. The club is more ambitious than that clearly. Smalling, Jones and young are all PL winners btw. Did the club still lack ambition when they were winning the PL?
