FFS when will we actually sell someone. Rojo, Darmian, Jones, Young - all look to be staying.
I'd be happy for Young to stay, he's a useful squad player. Darmian might need to stay if we don't bring in another proper RB purely to provide backup. Rojo and Jones need to leave.

Far too injury prone. He gets way too many contact injuries, which is a huge warning sign.

Of course he's staying though, as are the rest of the deadwood on high wages. Mo money, mo problems.

The guy needs to get bloody fit. Perhaps a loan would do him good, but im starting to think he wont be at the club this time next year. Shame.

Maybe under Jose be may stay fit

Will be a sad day to see the legend go, who else will be the butt of jokes in the future? So many good memories and gifs.

Genuinely can't see any reason why we would keep him. He isn't first choice and as far as backups go what use is having a someone as backup if they can't ever be fit to play? At least if we get Fonte in as backup you can be pretty sure when he's needed he'll be able to play. Plus, he's just not that good anyway - I'd even rather see the minutes go to some of the youngsters. How many seasons in a row do you say "well yeah but if he stays fit...."

I think he can still potentially do a Smalling if he can put a run of games together and become a good player, the problem is it's almost impossible to imagine him putting together more than 3-4 consecutive games without going down injured again, Johnny Evans left and had a great season for West Brom, but previously he's had seasons where he was able to stay fit for a long stretch, with Jones we've seen no signs at all he can curb his injuries.

If we're not going to get back our investment, or able to get a decent replacement in, then obviously, yeah, keep him.

Could he be used as a bargaining tool for a decent PL centre back?

Who is the dumbest British manager in the league?

Shame that Allardyce isn't managing at club level.

Sell him.
We can always play Mensah, Rojo or Carrick (in that order) if we have a injury crisis to our central defenders (Smalling, Bailly, Blind).

Sell him with a buy back clause and then if he proves his fitness and form, then we have the option to get him back. If we sell him and he can't do either of the two, then at least we recovered some funds before it's too late.

Much rather keep him than Rojo. Much rather we kept Evans than bought in Rojo to be honest.

If he stays I think the best way to use him would be as a midfield destroyer rather than a CB. In neither position is he like to see many minutes, but his positional indiscretions and general all around action style are better suited to the DM role than CB.

His best performance by far came at the Bernabeu in the DM role where he was basically tasked with chasing the ball around like a dog and tackling everything within sight. Remember thinking he was going to become a colossus after that match. Sad to see how wrong I was.

The Guardian article alluded to Jones being a key part of the team. Either it's a ploy to recoup as much of our investment or maybe Jose might try him out as a holding CM, cause I can't see him as being part of the defensive rotation anymore, TBH.

I think I'm in the minority of those who still see a future for Jones (if he can stay fit, which is admittedly a huge if.) I thought he was very promising in his first few seasons for us, and then the injuries started piling up. It's not like we're relying on him to be our first choice CB at the moment, so why not keep him, especially as an experienced player for the Europa/League Cup/FA Cup games?

One takeaway from the early stages of this season (and yes it is still early,) is that a clean slate and fresh start can produce remarkable results. Who would've imagined Fellaini's playing this much (or this well,) or Mata's being a fairly integral part of our attacking lineup, or Valencia's rediscovering his best form? Who knows, maybe we'll even see a different Marcos Rojo? If Mourinho wants Jones to stay, then I'd take that as a positive endorsement of his abilities.

Key part of Mourinho's plans, yeah right.

If by key part you mean 4th/5th choice centreback, 3rd choice right back, 7th choice midfielder.

Jamie Jackson in getting strung along shocker.

Evans was better than Jones and Rojo. Don't think Jose would keep Evans if he were still here. Surprised he's linked to Arsenal.

He supposedly wants to stop. If that is the case we better hope we stay in all the cups for a long, long time or there will be a lot of players who are just happy to turn up at training and get a bucketload of money without even contributing to the bench.

He's not going to be a key part of the team. Won't even get in the squad on most match days.

Yes keep him if we can not get more cover, but as far as the investment goes, we bought him in the summer of 2011 so my guess is that we have written off the transfer fee by now (they are usually amortized over 4 or 5 years). We won't really take a loss on the books if we sell him at this point.

just like so many said Fellaini wouldnt be part of his plans?

I think a fully fit Jones can force his way into the squad

But he has been fully fit. As far as I know he's had a full pre season under Mourinho with no injuries. Yet he still can't even make the matchday squad with Smalling suspended.

There's no hope for him at all. even if Mourinho does throw him a lifeline when the Europa league starts up, he's only going to get injured again after 10 minutes anyway.

Is Jones the most laughably overrated player in living memory?

Seems underrated if anything. He's a good player but going by some of the comments here you would think he was useless. Injuries are the only problem.

He's clumsy and not very gifted on the ball. He hasn't lived up to expectations.

He has a lot of heart, I'll give him that.

Really don't see the point in keeping him, he's rash and clumsy. He hasn't developed and he doesn't stay fit long enough to develop.

We should sell, he's not good enough. Massively overrated by some on here it seems

Would rather see Rojo get shipped out first, but won't be to fussed if Jones leaves as well. He is decent, but so overrated.

Evans was better than Jones and Rojo. Don't think Jose would keep Evans if he were still here. Surprised he's linked to Arsenal.

I think Evans was better than Jones as well but then he is at least 4 years older. I think Jose probably would have kept Evans though obviously would be nowhere near first choice. Not that surprised he is linked with Arsenal, they need a Premier League level and experienced centre half and he would fit the bill.

Yup. but no one at LB to back Shaw which is probably why Rojo will stay over Jones (other than the fitness).
We have Blind and Darmian as LB cover. We should offload both Jones and Rojo, and I expect that we will.

I keep hearing about how he's so clumsy yet he's always been a good tackler with a good disciplinary record, he's not gifted on the ball but is a centre back who's played competitive international football as a midfielder. Something doesn't add up here.

I agree on not living up to expectations but that's due to injuries, nothing else.

Jones playing midfield would be one of the many problems facing the national team.

That is all heart right there. But he shouldn't be getting himself into situations like that in the first place.

Wouldn't be surprised if he goes somewhere and does OK, a bit like Jonny Evans. Saying that, if Jose manages to turn him into a player, then it's all good. I read during the summer JM told Jones he wanted him to be United's version of John Terry, although I am assuming he meant on the field, not knocking off his team-mates wives or anything like that...
